Bad news for Hawaii?

Given the amount of revenue Hawaii generates from Japanese tourist, it seems
likely that the earthquake/tsunami will impact Hawaii.

Many Japanese are not going to see this as a good time to vacation; but maybe
some will want to get away since they are powerless to do anything else.

The economic impact on Japan can't even be measured, I can only think that
the fall out will reach Hawaii.

This may be the death nail for some Waikiki hotels.

Until you find out that there is a war going on against the homeless there.
Homeless people spend the night running from cops trying to find a place
to sleep.

It's illegal to pitch a tent, sleep in a car etc...
The public areas are closed at night, meaning being there is illegal.

Homeless in Hawaii, will not be homeless for long if they don't keep ahead
of the cops, since they will get a jail cell as a new home for a few days.

If Hawaii's economy collapsed I would think they would change their ways and find more compassion for the homeless.

I went on a surf trip to Oahu back in the late 80s and I remember seeing all the homeless people. Here in Florida we get many more homeless people in the Winter as the cold drives them south. Then when summer rolls around they head back north again in a transient nature.

So I'm in Hawaii looking at all homeless thinking to myself, how the hell did these bums get to Hawaii when I had to work two full summers to save up enough for my surf trip

They were born there and kicked out of their places to live because the land
owners could make more money by renting the property to people who saved
up for two summers to visit.



Most homeless people are employed, just not enough hours or consistently enough
to pay high rent.

It actually works the opposite as business owners start to complain that the
reason they are not making money is because the homeless scare the tourist
away and devalue the area.
