Downside Of Pricing Your Domains: Owner Of MediaLocker.com Gets It Snagged Overnight For $18,500...

Downside Of Pricing Your Domains: Owner Of MediaLocker.com Gets It Snagged Overnight For $18,500 After Amazon Announcement

Quote:

Last night I wrote about Amazon?s announcement that it was launching a service they referred to as a Media Locker.

Less than a few hours later a reader noticed the domain name MediaLocker.com, which was listed on Afternic.com for $18,500 was purchased.

This illustrates the danger of pricing your domains and having them sitting out there when there is breaking news or new products announced they are certain to get grabbed before you have a chance to pull them off the system or increase the price to reflect the development.

As that same reader pointed out (Adam) that at Domain Fest I spoke about this precise issue.

While pricing your domains will increase the volume of your sales you have to be prepared to lose a big one when news or events break that makes your $18K domain a six figures domain overnight.

I hear ya, i once had a celeb (hernamepictures.com) name at $80. I decide to pull all domains from a sales page and suddenly get an offer for $500 cause he had been mulling it over and seen the page. He wanted the domain end of story and offered $500 to make sure he got it.

Not a big fan of fixed price. All my sales are from an offer or from posting in the buy/sell. Have actually never sold a fixed price yet even tho Sedo says that is best.

Yet, I have all mine fixed price now tho cause it "seems" best. Maybe I should change that.

Still seems like a great payday for that domain. Reminds me of the guy a couple years ago that sold webcamroulette.com for $1500, only to watch it be immediately auctioned for 150k.

Also because then I avoid the $50 comission to Sedo and get the 10% instead. Flipside is you get an offer for $70 on "Make Offer" and now owe Sedo $50.

As the article mentions, you'll greatly improve your chances of moving your domains with a fixed price over an offer page. Obviously though, if you're concerned about that slim chance you'll miss out on a domain that suddenly jumps in value, then don't do it.

Thanks appreciate it, was never sure if fixed was best.

I did recently get an offer for $70 when one was "make offer" and had to give Sedo $50. I still did it cause I want to sell domains. So I wonder if I had it fixed price at $70 would the guy still have bought. I think he would and I would have saved the $50 to Sedo.

But pricing low fixed price so they get a deal seems best. For the better domains tho it is prob best to stay at "make offer" unless you have to sell now.

It is more about how bad the buyer wants it and if they can actually use it now. For some people a few $ one way or another doesnt matter if they really want it.

Someone is not going to be too happy when this domain re-sells for 500K.

I imagine amazon are smart enough to buy up domains before making big announcements, honestly.

Seems to me whoever sold it made out, seeing that the actual service is called Amazon CloudDrive, which might be described as a "media locker". Nothing in the official name of the service has anything to do with the words media locker.

Would be fine if it was a guide price rather than a sale-ending BIN, so the buyer is simply making an offer which may or may not be accepted. That does mean that sellers can stuff people around though, by deliberately listing low and countering with a higher price when an offer is made at the list price.

Or maybe not. Maybe he will build a similar service for the domain.
