So what would you chose instead of USA to live?

You are an average dude. Making enough for yourself online but health care insurance, gas price, home loan and shit is not your thing. You are sceptttttttttttttttttttical about improving your financials working at UPS or MTA for benefits they offer when you retire. Your american dream is so not going to work out, but what you have is freedom to chose where to embark for simplier life.
Sell your shit, pack a bag of cash ( virtually ), and move out...

As an american, where would you wanna go to settle for the rest of your life?

Panama..... No question. Love it there, and I will be there eventually.

Low crime, low taxes, low cost of living, beautiful place, cosmopolitan mix of ethnic groups from all over with world, great food, etc....

the Netherlands!! I have done a ton of research on Holland over the past year and I have to say what I have found has been very impressive. The people, the communities and the way the country looks all appeal to me.

and from what I understand, during their week of summer it is absolutely beautiful there hahaha

I have a European buddy telling me it's awesome too. Just curious, since it near Costa Rica is this tropic climate bearable at all for a Scandinavian type like myself?

I always wanted to retire to Mexico. That doesn't seem like the best of choices these days.

Costa Rica or Panama would be nice.

Rio, Brazil looks like heaven on earth, especially for a guy who likes girls with bubble butts. I'd be too afraid of accidentally ending up in a Favella.

It's definitely tropical.... I live in Miami, so its very similar. I guess it's all up to what you like or don't like. Personally I would rather sweat a little than shiver with cold! Obviously offices and homes have air conditioning, so it's not like you just sit sweating all day, and when you are out in the street, everyone is in the same boat, so you don't feel out of place with a little sweat on you. There are higher elevation areas in the interior that are cooler, but in any case, you can get used to anything!

I definitely like it better than Costa Rica. It's cheaper, lower crime rate, better medical care and the choice of different cuisines, (because of the different populations that have come in over time to work on the canal), as well as access to goods from all over (via the canal zone), all make it the best choice for me.

(Tons of beautiful, cheerful girls with no "attitude" from next-door Colombia don't hurt the scenic advantages either!)

If you have a set income of at least $1000 USD per month from a pension or fund then you can get an automatic "pensionado" visa that gives you permanent residency and discounts on everything from your medications to your power bill.

I've always been drawn to France or the Netherlands. I really like their lifestyles and a lot of the social values. Somewhere outside of the big cities, though, most likely.

Panama just moved up my travel list. I've been hearing some fantastic things about it in the last year and have wanted to visit, seeing people saying they'd move there just confirms it for me. I'm defo going to visit in the next 12 months. Hope to check out Brazil and Argentina too.

If I could choose any place in the world to live in I'd probably go for Barcelona in Spain out with anywhere in USA. For me tho, one day I want to live in USA. Miami, LA or NYC would be great. My fiancee could make big money in either of those places in her job.

the plan is to get a place out in the smokey mountains (nothing wrong with the US) and maybe a place out in France as well.

Panama sounds interesting though.

I'm not a "pensionado" yet, any other possibilities like opening your own company to get a residency?

I would choose to live in lots of countries other than the US and yes I always had the choice.

My Brother is a Green Card Holder, my Parents went there to live in 1980 and opened their own business. As a self employed shooter, I could of done the same.

The problem was I loved visiting it, but would of gone mad living there. Too many superficial people, too many people worried about how much you earn/own, too much BS in loads of places the winters suck. As you point out some of the charges for things Europeans take for granted are very expensive in the US.

San Diego was nice, San Francisco was great, Nappa Valley not. But if you keep driving East there's a beautiful place to live. If you want to be a hermit. And that's the problem. In the US the places with models are the last places I would want to live. Catch 22.

Plenty of programs in place. Other nice things about Panama is the large expat community of both former Americans and Former Europeans. I have a ton of friends there, and I'm down there at least 6 times a year. Check out "The Passport Book" by Robert Bauman

Fixed it for you. The worst part about Panama, Panamanian chicks are ugly and all the Colombianas are prostitutes.

You need to go places before you decide you want to live there..

I've been there many, many times over the years, both on the pacific side and the atlantic side, I go about once every 6 weeks. Just got back from being there all last week. I have friends there, I do business there, etc....

Everyone can have their own opinion, but perhaps I may know the place even better than you do?

Been here since 2006. Self solvency visa will give you the opportunity for passport / citizenship.

Not without its' problems. Culture is vastly different than the USA and many things drive a lot of people crazy and they go back to where they came from.

The only thing here that is cheaper than the USA is domestic help, alcohol and seafood (well, hookers, cigs and cocaine if that's on your list).

Most property can be had with 20 year exoneration on taxes meaning you only pay taxes on the land and not the improvements. If you have income from outside the USA you may qualify for the foreign earned income tax credit.

Speaking Spanish is a definite plus. Speaking Panamanian Spanish even better. lol

Sid if there is a place you want to live, you need to visit it. Don't bother asking for opinions, because they are like assholes, everyone has one.

It's not as cheap as it used to be, but if you got a couple hundred grand to burn, have at it. Just do tourist visa abuse for a while and see if you like it.

Agreed. I would come here first and rent or travel for a while and decide. I started coming in 2005 and made several trips to both Panama and Costa Rica before I bought and moved.

My son was 3 at the time, so it was even more important for us.

Self solvency used to be 200k plus 10k per dependent. It's now 300k. You can do it in property, deposit at Banco Nacional or a combination. Property has to be owned outright.

Sid70, search "Panama Self Solvency Visa" and you will get results.

There are cheaper options like this in Panama, too.
