UK: writting a book makes you a terrist

Quote:
Leeds ?home gunsmith? dies before trial

A gun enthusiast facing terrorism charges over manuals he wrote on how to make homemade firearms has died.

Philip Luty, 46, of Bedford Mount, Tinshill, was facing three charges following a raid on his home by armed anti-terrorism officer in May 2009.

Mr Luty, who referred to himself as the ?Home Gunsmith?, was facing the charges over three volumes, all under the title Expedient Homemade Firearms.

One of the books demonstrates how to construct a 9mm machine gun, using readily available materials.

Mr Luty, who has served a previous sentence for firearms offences, died from cancer on April 8.

He had been facing a trial for the three offences under the Terrorism Act 2000 relating to ? making a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism.?

Mr Luty also faced a further charge of possession of a prohibited weapon, the charge referred to a ?collection of pipes which could be screwed together to produce an item from which a bulleted cartridge could be discharged.?

The proceedings against him were formally ended yesterday after the Recorder of Leeds, judge Peter Collier was informed of his death.

On his website, Mr Luty is described as ?a pro-firearms campaigner with a no compromise stance on gun rights issues.?

Describing his first book, and the machine gun it shows how to make, he wrote: ?The finished book must be written in a format which the average individual would understand and offer an improvised machine gun design simple enough for any would-be home gunsmith to put into practice, if he so desired.

?Upon its completion, the machine gun was reasonably light and compact. All items used in construction were standard hardware products which would not arouse suspicions when purchased or left ?lying around?.

?It would fire a commercially available cartridge and could be clandestinely manufactured without the need for expensive machine-tools,? and added, ?More importantly, at least as far as I was concerned, it succeeded in giving the British anti-gun lobby something to think about, which was the whole motivation behind the project in the first place.?

My thoughts:

Sounds an interesting book. I would love to read it. Shame we have laws that make such things illegal.

Of cause if I did get hold of a copy no doubt I would be arrested under some silly terrorism act and be convicted as a terrorist.

Perhaps the government should just post a list of what books it thinks we should look at and not look at, and also tell us what to think and not think.

At least the police should not worry. From what I can make out very few have a degree, and so education for them is no great deal.

If you do a google search for Expedient Homemade Firearms you can find the book I believe.

But be warned looking at it 'may' get you arrested as it may be against some odd law. My advice is not to read anything or think anything just in case. After all by seeking knowledge you may be a subversive and as such clearly a danger to national security, and so will need to be arrested and locked away for years. I know you probably think it sounds like we are part of USSR with no rights and thought crime is now a crime, and would I disagree with you on that?

After all if you really was a terrorist and intent on doing harm, your hardly going to worry about such laws and not have access to all the documents you need. Unless your a plonker, I think we all know these laws are rather stupid and would never prevent anyone from being involved in terrorism or accessing documents on terrorism. All such laws do is remove your right to access information.

And before some MP or police says, why should a law abiding person want to access such data. My reply is simple. One should not ever need to defend any reason why one should seek knowledge. Its no ones business. Should I want to read about ants, or how to build a computer or indeed make a gun. Knowledge should be like religion. Its personal. Why I believe something or seek knowledge in something is no business of anyone else including the state. One should not be required to provide reasons why one seeks knowledge. As long as one does not harm others (including animals as well as people) why should it be a crime?

Maybe even writing this I am committing a crime in this crazy world we live in. I know independent thought is becoming more frowned upon each day.

So please do not think. Just go watch x factor where you can grin like a moron at the screen.

Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet) - I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it.
