:mad Video: Police Slam Wheelchair-Bound Citizen to the Ground

http://www.chicagonewsreport.com/201...heelchair.html

Washington D.C. -- Two officers, identified as Washington D.C. cops, were caught on camera slamming a wheelchair bound man to the ground.

The video entitled ?DC police abuse homeless man in wheelchair?, was uploaded to Youtube on May 19, 2011, by someone using the screen name ChrisWhite313.

At the beginning of the footage, two cops can be seen wrestling with a man riding what appears to be a motorized wheelchair, and instructing him to ?get on the ground?. Which is a little difficult to do if you can't walk.

Then the officers throw the seemingly disabled man onto the concrete, causing his head to bleed.

not good pr for the police department...lol
cue someone coming in and calling them pigs
then cue the people sticking up for the cops, and calling everyone leftist sheep or something..lol

The same reason there always is. A cop's life is worth 1,000 citizens lives, and must be overprotected at all costs.

The strategies and tactics they're taught are overused in situations they're not needed in. They overreact to everything, as a strategy to get you to commit a crime you wouldn't otherwise commit.

It is my opinion that these strategies cause danger to the public. If they would respectfully and patiently resolve issues instead of being dickheads, more people would act better in these situations.

Obviously being in a situation with police causes an adrenaline rush, and police have an opportunity to be a calming and informative force in those situations. You'll often see on COPS etc after a crazy drama, the final thing the police will do is be nice and re-assuring, trying to calm the people down. They seem to only do this after yelling, threatening, being condescending, etc.

My dad's a cop, my sister's studying to be a cop, my best friend's dad is a cop, his mom did finger printing, I have a lot of cops in my life. I do have an understanding of what they have to go through, and how people don't give them these benefits either. However the police are supposed to be well trained, well paid, sober, and respectful. We're right in expecting a lot of them to represent the best of us. Surely, cops have to deal with some of the worst people, in their worst moments. When people are being outrageous, nobody has a problem with these tactics. I just think many times people are incited into greater crimes because of police strategies, causing danger to citizens.

That's pretty fucked up.

I understand if I broke some law and had to be arrested, but slamming him down on the ground was WAY out of line.

Should have had his seatbelt on. Does seem to stand fairly well while they are dragging him out of it too. None of these 'ooh what a scandal!' videos ever show the previous 5 minutes giving the reason for something happening.

I tend to believe in the greater good and even more so with cops. I know there are bad apples, but I honestly believe that cops are good.

In 2004 I found myself caught up in a little tussle with the highway patrol that resulted in a full felony stop, me spread eagle on the freeway. A over simplified explanation of what happened is I pulled away from a marked patrol car at a very high rate of speed, and they assumed I was fleeing. They thought I was a wanted convict or had drugs or what not, and it resulted in a full felony stop, guns drawn, freeway shut down. I did exactly what I was told to do, no back talking, no discussion about right or wrong at that point. I didn't have my faced shoved down into the pavement, and while it wasn't too pleasant of an experience I was treated pretty good. Once everyone calmed down I gave them full permission to search my car, and they discovered it was just a simple matter of me speeding without knowing there was a cop behind me. (It was at night, Phoenix, Limo tinted windows.) But if I said one thing out of line, I knew it would be a very different story.

Sorry, but when the cops talk to you and you give them flack, they respond with force. It's not that they have an attitude or want to boss people around. A friend of mine is a cop - and female cop - and she tells me every day she gets spit on or hit. After a while it gets old.

I'd love to hear the story behind this one.

Police Bad Boys

From the appearance of the video, it does look like they are bad cops. But we didn't see the prior of why they are on him and the other question is, many a wheel chair guy gets up and walks away after earning his daily money.
I'm not defending the cops. I am on the wheel chair guy's side. But I do want to make sure I see the truth. Look at this like a juror in a trial. Who really is the bad guy here? Show the whole video let us decide.

"Metro Transit Police were on routine patrol at the station when they spotted the man in a wheelchair drinking an alcoholic beverage, according to Metro Spokesperson Steven Taubenkibel.

The officers asked him to leave the area but he refused, police say. The officers attempted to give him a citation. When he refused to cooperate, they told him he would be arrested, according to a statement issued by Metro."

While we didn't see what led up to his getting taken out of the wheelchair there was no need to slam his head into the sidewalk like that. Even if the guy was drunk, he clearly didn't resist and they could have taken it a lot easier on that dude.

I'm normally one to defend the police, but it looks like a least one of these guys got out of hand. I have a feeling the guy in the chair, if the story in this thread is right, was drunk and probably talked some smack and it pissed the bigger dude off. If you watch the video the smaller guy seems like he is ready to just get the guy out of the chair then the bigger dude trips him and drives him into the sidewalk.

Pretty messed up.

He was obviously drinking/drunk in public and parked on top of a metal grid.
There are laws against those kinds of things. He was asked to move politely and when he did not, the cops had every right to slam him

OMFG, I wonder if this is real, according to this website http://www.copblock.org/4738/dc/ this is the press release that the department gave:

Quote:
On Thursday, May 19, the Metro Transit Police on routine patrol at the U St. Metrorail station observed a patron in a wheelchair drinking an alcoholic beverage. The officers asked the patron to leave the area and he refused. The officers then attempted to issue the patron a citation and when the patron refused to comply with the issuance of a citation he was told that he would be placed under arrest. The patron resisted arrest which resulted in him falling out of his wheelchair. The patron was arrested for assault on a police officer and drinking in public.
The patron was transported to a local hospital with a minor injury.
Metro Transit Police are following up on this report.

"The patron resisted arrest which resulted in him falling out of his wheelchair. "

is that what they call slamming someone to the ground these days.. lol

Falling would be something you do by yourself. Seeing as he cant walk , he probably can't stand. Standing him up would force him to fall. Either way he didn't fall anyways as clearly shown in the video

I guess that's why they are getting so worried about people videotaping them. If they weren't doing anything wrong and protecting the public as they are supposed to do, they would be proud of their actions and have no problem with some free publicity.

the police are our employees. They work for us. If the majority of the people think their behaviour is inappropriate then it is.. simple as that.

7-11 employees have the "right" to call you fuckface when you buy something. They have a right to be rude and unhelpfull.. Their boss would not like this and they would likely be fired.

Cops have a right to be rude and unhelpfull, but they are still our employees and as such should be fired.

He was obviously resisting, they should have encouraged compliance with their nightsticks a few hundred times.

Yes, they could have gone easier and reasonable. Thats the real issue. They know they dont HAVE to however. THATS the problem. IMHO of course.

Should have tazed him, and belted him with a bean bag gun too.

And the worst part is, that wouldn't even surprise me if it happened.

That post was sarcasm Smokey. Wheelchair guy and the dancers at the Jefferson memorial are no different.
Amazing how many didn't get upset about it. Good gauge.

Can you put police officers under citizens arrest? Because that was clearly illegal on their part.
