LA Unified School District to turn out idiots

Fucking, unbelievable. The LAUSD, in its infinite wisdom has decided that homework should only count for a maximum of 10% of a student's grade. They decided that only privileged students have the ability to do homework at home and it was unfair to other students that did not have a mom and dad to make sure they did their studies.

I wonder what is going to happen when they enter the real world and have to compete against people that did not have grades handed to them on a silver platter.

I didn't do my homework and I did poorly in school. However, I don't use ANYTHING I learned in school in my present day job and do better than most.

Take from that what you will...

An education is about "learning how to think" and applying knowledge to gain wisdom.

I don't think kids should have homework at all. They spend 8 hours a day in school as it is, why should they spend their nights doing homework? I don't know too many people who bring work home every fucking day, why should kids have to?

They should also get kids into apprenticeships where they can actually learn how to do something. 90% of the shit they teach is utterly useless - What good is memorizing Shakespeare when you can't balance a checkbook? They need to learn real life skills that will prepare them for something more than winning trivia contests or flipping burgers.

I always thought it was a joke, most of the time we didn't do shit in class then got homework assignments. Homework I seldom did because I played sports and had a job.

I'm not sure how it is elsewhere, but in my state they no longer graduate kids form 8th grade. When I was in 8th grade you had to have passed a specific number of classes your 6th, 7th and 8th grade years to graduate. If you failed more than just a couple you either went to summer school or didn't graduate. Now they move everyone on as a "promotion of excellence." My nephew had a grand total of 18 classes his 8th grade year. 6 classes per term. He failed 17 of the 18 and got a C in that one class and they promoted him to high school. They told my brother and his wife that they will never hold a kid back in 8th grade unless instructed by the parents to do so.

When my nephew got to high school they let him in a program that allowed him to basically turn his work in whenever he wanted If he got an assignment on the 1st and was told it was due on the 5th he could still turn it in on the 25th and get full credit for it. Basically so long as he turned it in by the end of the semester he got credit for it. They are basically setting him up to fail because at a job they don't let you come and go as you please and do your work whenever you want.

He could always be a webmaster.

Around here, if you flunk a class, you have to go to summer school. If you flunk too many, you have to repeat the grade. I can't imagine how shitty a school system would have to be to promote a kid who failed 17 of 18 classes, Jesus, that is bad.

Here they do not have homework. They have like Math for 3 hours, so the first part is the teacher teaching, then they do the homework in class. Then every other day, they have a class called excell I believe, just a new word for study hall.
I think it is stupid, but then again, they do not have any books to bring home. Each class has one book per desk, NOT per child. What are they using all the money for????

That sounds exactly like real life to me.... I've never had a job where I had homework.

Same goes with cheating... in real life you can always ask a buddy, but in school it's cheating.

School is completely backwards to how life actually works.

What school system are you talking about? 8 hours, if our kids went to school for eight hours parents wouldn't need aftercare. 5 hours of education with a maximum of 6 hours in school.

We did 8-3... 7 hours, add in 2 hours travel each day... half the year it was 1.5 hours one way, either morning or afternoon. That's before sports.

This ranks right up there with "everyone wins every time".

Only privileged students have the ability to do homework at home? Really? Why? Because they need to run home to sell crack on the street corner? Well then let's rule out homework because some kids can't do it at home. Next up, we'll rule out test taking because too many students are too stressed out because they live in single parent households. Then we can do away with attendance because some kids can't get to school because their parents don't have cars.

Whatever.

Oh yeah.

We spend something like $5,000.00 a student annually (depending on the school district) for education, while we spend $40,000-50,000.00 per criminal to warehouse non-violent criminals in prisons.

That's because the parents pay for cloths, food, housing, etc. If we look at overall school income vs. student, and add in State costs from welfare, housing projects, tax breaks, etc... per student, I bet it starts to equal out more, that's before adding on the parents bare costs.

some homework is ok but it seems kids are getting more and more piled on them these days. its a pretty strange situation really. they are expecting kids to learn more and more yet constantly lowering expectations that the kids will actually be able to do it by having a 'no one is held back' policy.

We have a kindergarten and first grader, both have homework every week, other than vacation weeks. It starts right after they start school now... and it sucks.

They aren't learning more, the no child left behind act makes it so they learn only enough to pass the placement-funding-graduation tests, and not a drop more. Everything they do from kindergarten up is all based off these performance and placement tests.... If your kid can read/understand and write just fine, but they suck at standardized testing, they're put in remedial classes until they catch up. If they rock the tests, they're split apart from the rest and put in better classes, if a ratio of students can hit this mark, they get funding for the programs & more school money overall - if not, they get punished with less funding.

yes like a horse race... the faster horses are hobbled so all the horses hit the finish line at the SAME time so no horse will feel bad about themselves... weird isn't it?

wonder why it is politically correct run faster, jump higher, have better rhythm but not be smarter?

what good is balancing a check book if you don't know how to appreciate the finer things in life?

I agree that schools should put time aside to learn some functional tools that will be used later in life, i still use skills learned in shop classes and home ec to this day. But if you negate the arts or anything else that abandons our own cultures and history then you are doing nothing but building drone factories...

better credit scores doesn't make up for that sorry...
