What do people expect him to say? Should he get up there and go, "Yep, we're fucked. Buy bullets, water, food and godspeed."

Totally. Everything that has happened has been the fault of the Republicans or the tea party. Obama and the democrats have no accountability. Gee, I can't imagine you're doing what you're doing rather than say, being a political analyst.

I was a fan of his when he got elected and like a lot of people hoped he would do well. I still think he will get re-elected, but that has more to do with the shitty options the republicans are putting up than it has to do with Obama doing well. The thing that has caused me to not like him lately is that he seems to just give in and give the republicans whatever they want. He is like a battered wife who won't press charges. What is worse is that he seems to not have any plan of his own. He relies too much on congress and those guys can't seem to do anything right. He needs to make an agenda, take it to the people and then take it to congress and challenge them to get it done, but he seems unwilling to do that.

It really is just a serious lack of leadership. He might have been great as a supply sergeant but there is no way I would've ever followed a fellow like him into combat.

The solution is to stop spending, especially on wasteful fraudulent government social programs.

But, nobody wants to get off the gravy train.

Yep. When he was running he appeared to be a charismatic leader who might be able to get things done. Now it seems that either he is unwilling or unable to take the hard stance and stand for what he believes in.

I don't agree... Obama had a chance at a deal that included revenue but from the sounds of it (which he doesn't come out and deny), he changed what he wanted and the deal died.. That deal would have been far better than what they did and probably would have kept their AAA rating... They could have got it thru the house in the same fashion they did with the final deal which cut out the tea party all together. While all sides are to blame for the circus, in my opinion Obama really fucked it up.

That "Will to Act" he speaks of is called Incentive where I come from. Add more regulations, higher taxes and complex tax systems combined mandated health care and that incentive gets much smaller.

In that speech he also made spending suggestions that would go beyond the spending that S & P is already worried about. If we do not cut what we said we were going to cut (which S&P did not think was enough in the first place) they will downgrade us again to AA.

That's what I heard too, couldn't believe he thought that giving a speech with the only substantive thing he said was raising taxes would help a crashing market. What's next, tomorrow he's gonna come out and say they are taking over the S & P, federalizing the dow, and confiscating gold?

Go and mine some gold Obama, pull back 35% of the defense budget...germany can watch their own damn country now and so can others. You can bomb anywhere in the world using planes with kids flying them from back home in the states. Soldiers would make great miners.

Unwilling, but incapable is more to the point. What is it that you would like to see him be able to do? Spend even more money that the USA doesn't have? I usually vote Democrat, but the Republicans are absolutely correct in trying to put handcuffs on him, Pelosi and Reid. No person, no company, no country has ever spent its way to prosperity. He's stubbornly trying to take this country down a very dangerous path.

People want him to fail and are praying for it.

He can kill the key terrorist that other presidents couldn't get but look how
hard it was for many people to congratulate him.

I'm going to vote for Obama again for sure but I'll actually be glad when he's no
longer president because it's been a long 3 years of listening to people bitch,
moan and whine about fake drama concerning him.

People act like they are really concerned about the economy but a few months
ago they were only concerned with a birth certificate that had already been
provided. They are really only concerned about fake drama to damage Obama.

he's been given no rougher ride than any other president. the Internet and Fox news weren't around for anybody but Bush and Obama and Obama is the first Democrat president to have to deal with Fox news.

Depends. If there is a deeper problem than we are being told, at the very least he should give the people a heads up and tell them to maybe save a little more, get some extra food, or prepare for the worst that may not ever come. And I'm sure that can be said in a manner that doesn't cause panic. But blowing smoke up their ass is wrong.

People are told to take shelter and prepare if a hurricane or tornado is coming. US citizens who live abroad are given alerts all the time (via embassy website) if the country we are in is having issues or a dangerous situation is possible, often telling us areas to avoid. So why can't they advise the people to prepare for a financial disaster?

Are things better or worse since he has been in office?

Regardless of who passed the buck to him, it has to stop with him. He even said so himself. What he does or doesn't do with the current situation defines his ability to be a good president/leader.

All the other BS aside, everything is happening on his watch and it ultimately falls in his lap.

There is absolutely no way he could say that and not cause a panic. For starters no matter how eloquently he might put it Fox News and the right would rip him apart for fear mongering (of course they do it as well, remember the terror level indicators?). They would be torn limb from limb for telling people to prepare for the worst. Second, there would be an immediate run on the banks even a mild run on the banks would be very bad for an almost fragile economy. Third, like it or not this is a consumer based economy and as we are seeing when people stop spending money things go poorly. It sucks, but it is reality. Put all three together and him saying that could have a catastrophic effect n the economy. Republicans ripped democrats apart for suggesting that people don't buy big gas guzzling cars that they don't need because they are not good for environment.

What you say is correct in that it needs to be said, but is something he can never say. The presidents number one job is to instill confidence in the people. When he tells them to pack up and head for the hills they will shit their pants.

Gosh, I'm glad what you just posted is supported by fa-... Wait it's not? You randomly posted that and told yourself it was true? I don't want to have to hold your hand in matters of common sense or logic but you really are leaving me with no choice.

When we stop paying for poor people, we will get better.

Poor people are poor because they are lazy. Do you keep lazy employees in your company?

if you have retarded people in your company or untrained, do you keep them in your company?

What I would have like to have heard was something like this.

My fellow Americans, We are going through a difficult time of our own making. Washington and the people who are elected to solve these problems have lost site of what this country is about.

Here is my plan. I will call the senate to task this afternoon. We will pledge to set election politics aside and do what needs to be done to solve these issues.

I suggest to you that
#1,We need to find a way to generate more revenue for the federal government. To do that I will propose a national !.5% sales tax on everything except food.

#2. I propose a 15% flat tax to everyone. We close all the loopholes and deductions.

#3. I will propose a 2% import tax on all products except food.

Now that we have a plan to increase federal revenue,we will attack federal spending. We will begin with entitlements. I propose we move our federal budget back to where it was in 2008. I propose we reduce military spending by 10% immediately.

I will insist that the congress put a hold on healthcare reform until we have a surplus budget.

Lastly, I will make good on my election promise to work with the other side to solve these very serious problems now.

Barack Obama.

Had we heard anything even remotely close to those words, I would vote for him in the next election. That is what leadership is. Have a plan and the means to implement it.

Not passing blame and making excuses.

Goes without saying that even if he found a cure for cancer and AID's there will still be people complaining how he attacked and hurt the pharmaceutics companies and hurt the economy by doing so.

Being president has always been a no win scenario with the public

S&P said it made its decision to downgrade the U.S. rating because it lacks confidence that the country's political leaders will make the choices needed to avert a long-term fiscal crisis.

The two other principal ratings agencies, Moody's and Fitch, kept the U.S. at the triple-A grade but warned its continued rising debt level was not consistent with holding the top ranking. Moody's also issued a "negative" outlook on the U.S.

Canada, Australia and Sweden have suffered similar downgrades and recovered to reclaim the coveted triple-A rating, but not without steering through some tough years and making equally tough decisions on spending.

The countries join Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland and the United Kingdom as the world's major triple-A nations.

Other countries, such as Iceland and Ireland, saw their triple-A ratings evaporate as their economies suffered near-death blows during the 2008 financial crisis and show no signs of returning to top-tier status soon, if ever.

TD's Alexander acknowledges the U.S. government has some big problems, but if it buckles down, gets its economic and political houses in order, it faces little risk of an economic relapse or a further decline in its credit rating.

so because he didn't say exactly what you want, it's his fault that you're not going to vote for him?

I think what Minte was trying to say was that because Obama didnt say anything even remotely hinting towards what steps they were going to take is why he's not gonna vote for him.

The speech was pretty weak. I am sick of excuses and want a solid plan in place on what our politicians are going to do to help fix the situation. I'm sick of the fighting between the 2 parties.

They can print money. They are AAA... Debt can be repaid overnight with massive inflation... There is no chance of default, except politically.

No Chance? Then why was Obama on TV every day for a week, up to the Last 24 hours right before the default?

Remember we were going to default, or nnot pay old people or what ever fear they wanted to say at the time.

Yes Both sides use fear, just saying!
