Best Antivirus/Malware Software?

Now that my overnight problem is fixed and I've had no sleep.. and I've banned the mofo that submitted the gallery with the virus on it in the first place....

I've been using McAfee Security Center for eons... before that Nortons. One of the things I've liked with McAfee is the siteadvisor in the browser.

What are all of your recommendations on the best Antivirus/AntiMalware/AntiSpyware/...overall Internet security package out there?

Ready to count the number of people that say "Get a Mac". Not gonna happen anytime soon for sure. WinXP Pro...ftw

Thanks

Try KIS. It's a bit slow, but it does it's job very well.

Glad you got your virus problem fixed.

I also use McAfee Security Center, and am happy with it so far. Did it completely fail to catch your virus?

Absolutely groundless statement. Mas OS X is much more vulnerable to trojans than Windows just because Mac users think they are safe and they don't use software protection.

For those who don't know. There is a large botnet working on Mac OS X right now. Perhaps your computer is among those zombies but you won't know this because you don't have any ant-malware software installed. Right?

Get the newest version of Kapersky & a virtual pc sandbox type of software as well to go along with Kaperskey. (If you download any software at all).

Also keep your browser up to date....I would suggest blocking Internet explorer from your firewall as well, since almost all exploits load through it.

Right now Chrome is the only browser without super-active exploits (so i hear).

Also you'll need a decent firewall....and kapersky will bitch about it being installed. Hopefully they fix that one of these days. When i say decent firewall I'm talking comodo/outpost...or something else you can train to alert you when system files update/new dll's/ocx's are loaded.

If you wanna get real sophisticated get a hex editor & learn a little about what malicious software looks like. I also know a kid that has banned all new ASM language files from being run on his pc. He also has a linux box that acts as his firewall & then a VPN at a host to route it all out. I think he might be a bit over paranoid.

So to sum up.....Kapersky or Avira minimum. Firewall (not just windows firewall). Virtual PC sandbox type software. (for testing all new downloads in a safe enviroment) & use a not-so-well known browser & keep it constantly updated. Also block Internet Explorer from accessing the internet. (may affect some programs connection/proxy settings unfortunately).

You should also consider installing some proxy software at your host & routing all your web surfing through it. This will keep you from exposing your direct home-ip to everyone in the world 24-7. Of course you can route all your other protocols too....but just http/https is usually enough to cut way down on your daily digital fingerprint.

Hit me up if you would like a friend to help you lock it down.....of course this offer only applies to you PersianKitty.

Was using it during 3 years until I cached 4 different trojans at once. All these trojans were detected and killed by KIS, while NOD32 was assuring me what my PC is clear.

Avira free works for me! AVG went to the shitter. I'd be willing to bet that if you uninstall AVG and install Avira, it will find viruses on your system, at least that's the pattern I've seen.

Internet Security 2010

I've tried about a dozen, and this is the one I like best so far.
a great feature, is when you register for a few years for it. you can download the newer version and use your current key and it all works.
others tend to miss things, or cause conflicts and slowdowns.
worst is norton,
mcaffee is ok, but misses some things, and a bit slow
kaspersky, avg panda spydoctor all those, tried 'em, and didnt like so much.
kaspersky is probably my second favorite to bitdefender internet security.

download bitdefender and give it the free 30day trial, I think you will find it's worth the money.

I used to use AVG on the windows box, but the new versions seem to be slower.

I switched to Avast. Run it on the netbook even, and it's pretty decent. Doesn't seem to slow the machine down any.

New Mac OS X malware - OSX_LAMZEV.A
by Steven Sande (RSS feed) on Nov 21st 2008 at 2:30PM
Computer security company Trend Micro is reporting that a new Mac OS X malware application is making the rounds. The application, called OSX_LAMZEV.A, gives hackers a way to take control of infected Macs. This is the second report of Mac OS X malware this week.

This is not a virus, and users must actually launch the app for it to install its payload. Once running, the app also asks which firewall port it can use. Trend Micro reports that "Mac users may be infected when they access remote websites hosting this backdoor. The backdoor may also be disguised as a legitimate application and may be installed and executed on systems."

Many Mac OS X-based malware seems to be similar in nature, requiring users to actually launch the installer and give it permission to install the payload. Unlike Windows-based malware, you shouldn't need to install any anti-malware apps to annoy you and slow down your Mac. Just make sure to follow the basic rules of Internet safety -- don't install applications that aren't legitimate or visit Web sites that you don't trust.

And...

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/sec...that_be_o.html

"To the Startled: No, I wouldn't recommend rushing out and buying an anti-virus solution for the Mac. "

Oh... and did you know to top it all off Os x has a built in Malware detector now in leopard? You would have to be a total moron to get infected using a mac... these programs can't instal unless you LET them, you have to actually type in your administrator password manually to allow it to install for one, and you have to ok it access to a port to actually work second (if your like me and use a port scanner like little snitch http://www.obdev.at/index.html your even more protected)

so lets get off the windoz high horse for a second and realize you have no clue what your talking about.

Deleted McAfee Security Center and installed the 30 day trial of Kaspersky 10 Internet Security... switched the File and the Web Antivirus to high for now.

Gonna run their scans and see how it goes.

Anyone offhand know if it warns on all registry changes or not?

McAfee is terrible. I had been a happy customer for years and years until this year when I've been infected twice.

Now I run Avast and McAfee because I don't trust McAfee on its own anymore.

Hey PK...

I'm gonna be the cunt in this discussion, if you pardon my french...

Im the guy that said 'Trend Housecall' last night...

I have used Norton since 2002 and will NEVER change!

A lot of people that say 'X' is the best antivirus... Is because 'X' is free...

Nothing wrong with free... But I'd rather pay $40.00 and be safe... Nuff said...

LOL @ that. Do you read Brian Krebs??? he is a complete idiot. My grandmother is better at computer security than that dickhead. I don't want even explain why, but please believe me - he is an absolute layman.

Dude just google for OSX.Trojan.iServices - it's something like an easy example for dummies. Don't ask me for the real dangerous trojans - they are spreading among Mac OS X systems like a locust right now...

nice try... you can only get that by downloading illegal software from a torrent, again, back to my you have to be a total moron example.

If your going to be a cheap bastard and steal, you asked for that one. So give me a break. Oh, and the build in malware detects even that if you where that stupid to start with...

So, show me another...

Oh, really? So Macs are get infected via illegal software, in a same time as Windows-powered PC's get infected via LEGAL one? Is that some stupid joke of you are really believe in that bullshit? C'mon be a bit more respectful to yourself.

Now your just sounding retarded. Let me see... do you know anything about false advertising laws? Have you noticed Apple runs commercials about their virus freeness? hmmm

So, in all your wisdom, your going to sit there and try to tell me that your windows box is more secure than a Unix certified OS? Give me some of what your smoking. The ONLY other know Trojan out there for the mac is a simple variation of the first one you stated... and it can only be gotten by installing (yes there is that pesky having to enter you admin password again and all that) it.

Try again

Exactly. Because I know (I don't know who are you, but I'm a former system programmer with 10 years experience BTW) that both system (Mac OS X and Windows) are vulnerable to trojans (not viruses, but trojans) absolutely in a same way (technically). However, Mas OS X users are never use anti-malware software and basically (yes that's true) they are less educated in computer security things than "paranoid" Windows users. This is why Mac OS X is more vulnerable than Windows. I know nothingh about you, but I'm reading some specific news almost daily and know that Mac OS X users are absolutely unprotected against trojans (old shit like OSX.Trojan.iServices and new currently spreading ones).

P.S. I'm using both Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.5.8 (haven't upgraded it for 10.6 for some serious reasons) and I know what I'm talking about.

Cyberxxx, I have done IT for over 25 years. I was the Network Administrator for a Fortune 500 company, I designed and installed the WANS for National Parks, Police stations, and more companies than I could even remember at this point. I have a Degree in computer since, hold a CNE and an MCSE. I was the guy they called when the other engineers could not figure out an issue. So, I know just a little bit about computer security.

It's funny isn't it, that even though I have an MCSE, and supported Windows platform for over 10 years directly, that I own and use all MAC. Sure, I thought that the power pc platform sucked, but once they went to the intel chipset they became, bar none, the most stable, secure personal platform the average enduser has ever seen. One thing I will give you, I have not worked a lot with Vista. I avoided that pile of crap like the plague. NT (to me) was the best OS windows ever put out.

As to the question originally posted... as IT I always used Kapersky or AVS. Course we always had to run some server level stuff as well, In the companies I worked for we kept things pretty locked down. Trend Micro seemed to have a good product for home users at the time, now, I'm not so sure.

Rest assured, if I was doing it all again from scratch, the all the machines would be macs.

I've recently jumped on the Kaspersky bandwagon and so far I'm loving it. I had Nod32 on my main computer and Avast paid on my laptop, but both of them let stuff slip buy, so now I'm gonna see how Kaspersky does. The new 2012 version just came out and you surely can't beat the price, $71.99 for their internet security package to use on up to 3 computers.
