Web Sales Tax Collection Bill Filed In House on Oct 12th!

Quote:
A sales tax bill with bipartisan support was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, proposing a fast-track way for states to require online and catalog retailers to collect sales tax.

The bill exempts sales tax collection by retailers with less than $1 million in annual nationwide sales; for individual states, the exemption is based on having annual in-state sales of less than $100,000.

Good luck with that. All the big money is made on sites and companies outside the USA.

Others that can move, will move offshore.

*Speaking only about adult sites FYI. Online retailers like BestBuy.com, Overstock.com, etc have been bracing for this for years.

The banks fuck over the masses to get richer, making the masses poorer.

The government gets weaker, due to loss in revenue from the masses, and increases taxes to become stronger, making the masses even poorer.

This increases the divide between the rich and poor. Not good

This should make all the Pro-Government/Anti-Business "protestors" (OWS) VERY happy!
Now evil big corporations will "pay". And the benevolent govt. that loves us all and looks after us like a shepherd tending it's sheep will have MORE money to give out to it's friends and/or start wars!

This is great news!

Awesome. More companies will move outside of the US. Great job.

What's the big deal?

I pay "use tax" on Internet purchases of goods every year. Costs me 6% ($60.00) per thousand -- big fucking deal ... Costs more to pay fines and penalties if you get caught for tax evasion.

FYI: you need to declare Internet purchases on state tax returns and pay the use tax -- always have ...

Why is there no sales tax on real property and stock, bonds and other securities? How much could we reduce sales tax on consumer product purchases with those items included to offset the loss in sales tax revenue?

Then you would need to import the goods and pay foreign exchange costs, maybe duties and definitely use tax anyway. That's a red herring -- someone is going to sell the product you need/want in any case ...

Yeah, forget the tubes, torrents, .xxx, and piracy - an online tax that we'll just easily add into the membership site pricing, is what's finally gonna kill the adult biz!

</sarcasm>

Actually, if online porn (or marijuana) gets taxed, it is here to stay!

Think about it...

To the best of my knowledge, service goods are not taxable in this state -- other states may differ ... As an example: I do not pay sales tax on a DVD rental or a movie ticket.

I can see how this might affect a computer parts seller on the Internet -- this law would make him the unpaid tax collector for 50 states and he would bear the cost of the collection and remitting of the monies collected to 50 states ... Problem is that this is uncompensated work and the end seller will probably want to raise his price ... So buyers end up paying a higher cost in the end.

But the problem is more complex -- each state has its own tax laws and rates -- this bill is headed to being tabled most likely -- it makes no sense.

I lived in South Carolina in the 1990's and most of the 2000's.

Video poker was a multi-billion dollar year industry there. It employed tens of thousands of people and the state made a fortune off the fees, licenses, and taxes.

Jim Demint even won the governershp by pledging to all the bars, nightclubs, and convenience stores that he would NOT let anything happen to video poker business.

BUT, the Supreme Court of South Carolina declared it unconstitutional one day out of the blue. I mean it caught everybody by surprise.

Within a week the sheriff's offices around the state were raiding businesses and destroying the video poker machines and arresting people.

Just like that the state of South Carolina cut it's own throat in the blink of an eye.

Don't think that just because something gets taxed that the govt. isn't perfectly capable of complete and utter stupidity.

Video poker employed "tens of thousands" of people? Cool.

Im surprised something like this wasnt setup earlier.

When you buy something in another state, you are supposed to (unless you state does not collect sales tax) report that to the state and pay the % you owe.

I just saw something not to long ago on CNBC how these super rich in NY were buying shit from New Hampshire for use in the NY house and not paying taxes on it, such as million dollar paintings, furnishings, jewelry, etc.

For me, I normally buy things online because they are cheaper, but don't think I purchase enough year round to owe significant amount of money in taxes... but if everyone filed, there would be a LOT more revenue for the states
