Indian Call Center Companies Moving to Philippines

MANILA, Philippines ? It won?t be long and several call center companies in India will be moving its operation in the Philippines. US-tapped call centers firms in India are now setting up operations abroad in a bid to shift to cheaper destinations in Asia, the Washington Post reported today.

The plan to expand in the Philippines came as several voice-based companies in India are ?finding not only lower costs and plenty of English speakers, but also better infrastructure and government incentives? in the Philippines.

?India absolutely cannot take the voice-based call-center business for granted anymore,? the Post quoted Sujit Bakshi, president of the corporate affairs and business services group at Tech Mahindra, an information technology services and outsourcing company with operations in the Philippines and Malaysia.

India remains the preferred call-center destination, but it lost its label as the call-center capital of the world as salaries and other costs of doing business there soared.

In the last three years, the National Association of Software and Service Companies said 13 Indian call-center companies have set up large offices in the Philippines and have trained and hired local workers.

?The growth in the Philippines is also being driven, to a large extent, by Indian outsourcing companies that are setting up operations there,? said Sangeeta Gupta, the association?s senior vice president.

The Philippines earns about $5 billion annually from call centers and will soon cater to the back-office operations of the pharmaceutical and health-care industries, according to the A.T. Kearney Global Services Location Index 2011.

Filipinos and Americans have a lot in common culturally, which is attractive to call-center businesses, analysts say.

?They think like Americans,? Bakshi said, adding that Filipinos ?drive on the right side of the road, sing American songs, watch American boxing and play basketball.?

Besides seeking cheaper destinations, global companies increasingly want a backup plan in case one country is hit by a natural calamity or unrest.

jobs are so bad here now that I'm sure i could find some Americans willing to work for $4/hr if it wasn't for min. wage. But the problem is the dumb ass commercial real estate guys who still think they can get the big bucks for their spaces..

The weeks I spent visiting an expat friend in the Philippines were enlightening. The people I encountered were extremely loyal to each other, hard working, and desperate for work and making a better life. I really hope this helps improve the lives of the people in the Philippines

When I worked at a call center for the phone company, they told us that NAFTA was going to send our call centers across the border - to Mexico. This makes perfect sense - they can connect direct lines across the border, and hire Mexicans. As an extra added bonus they already speak Spanish too.

Not that I'm for this, by why make call centers to service the US and put them half away around the world?

Beefed up infrastructure since then? We have fiber all over the ocean floor.

I absolutely HATE dealing with call centres.

We'd average around 5 to 10 calls a day from telemarketers and it is one of the biggest annoyances each day.

What kind of idiot actually buys anything from someone who rings them up out of the blue?
