I have a recording studio here so I guess that's kinda over the top for fooling around at home but... it's Cubase on a PC and the guitars are tracked with a Roland VG 8 or 88. Drums on a Roland V-Drum kit and the bass is a Sukop.

Fuck. When I do record, I use Acid Pro, and computer generated drums. Sounds bad, but doesn't make too much of a dirrference, cause I suck at writing.

For anybody that does write music, how the hell do you do it? I've been playing guitar for three years, and I'm not that bad at all, but I can't write worth shit.

Roland gear ROCKS! I had one of the original Roland SCC cards way back. The samples on that puppy were awesome.

The other thing I should mention is you need a SERIOUS sound card to make a PC recording not sound like shit. At minimum a DUE USB MiC Pre, at max something like the Layla.

A good tip for you to become more musical on the guitar (with lead anyway)... try taking 30 or 60 mins and just limit yourself to 3 notes. The same three notes.... find a way to make them sing. Wring everything you can out of them. Rhythmic patterns... sequences... weird bends or slides... etc... It'll help draw the music out of you and when you go for the whole neck you'll play more interestingly rather than just blowing off notes.

Another great tool... drum machine with some kinda key or bass sound module so you can just jam to it and record the jam. Lots of song nuggets come out of whacky improv.

Thanks a bunch. I'll try that out.

I'm not too focused of recording, because I only really do it to as a hobby, or to try and help write songs to use with my crappy spare time band.
