i am not a blogger...so...im asking for a friend...best software, and route to go.
it is a mainstream blog.
i dont think she will want to spend too much, however basic expenses of course should be expected. people still use blogger? i would think that its best to use your own domain. perhaps mirror it on blogger or something. anyway, if there is a thread with all the info, lemme know |

There's nothing wrong with Blogger. And in case it takes off like wildfire, it's scaleable too.

Domain $8 and hosting you can get for like $5 a month. Go with own domain and wordpress for sure.

BUt wordpress is the way to go. she can get a pretty decent theme for free or get a kick ass one for 35 bucks. With that it would need a little customization but depending on what all needed customized that as well could be under 50 bucks. If she has 30 dollars to invest... go with blogger. If she has 75-100 then go with wordpress and make it look cool.

If she's complete broke-ass, then start with blogger, she can export/transfer/move over to Wordpress any time. Wordpress is much more optimizable and customizable IMHO. :D

Setting up wordpress and some plugins and a theme takes like 10min. Usually the host will do It for you too if you only want one and ask them.

Vote for the domain + wordpress. She can get hosting for $5/mo and has full control over her site and can use any of the thousands of wordpress plugins out there.

Depends on what she wants to do with it. Ask a question where Wordpress is a possible answer and 90% of people here will simply say "Wordpress", regardless of the situation.
With Blogger you can use your own domain for free, many people do it. Same with Tumblr. IMO it's not necessary to have your own domain, especially for a small site or one that's just starting. Millions of people have free blogs, as a subdomain, at wordpress.com, but it's just about $20 year to use your own domain. The advantage of wordpress.com is that it's arguably better than Blogger, but like Blogger it's hosted, no need to worry about administering it, keeping it updated, or paying hosting fees, and she is likely to get traffic from wordpress.com itself. A potential disadvantage is they apparently 'sometimes' show ads. They can be removed for $30/year. So about $50 a year could get a blog on wordpress.com with domain and no ads. If she needs to run her own ads, it's not possible on wordpress.com. Even if she hosts it, and is willing to administer it, Wordpress(.org) isn't the only option. There is also the popular Moveable Type and lighter-weight software, Textpattern. |
