The Republicans have pretty much taken

...a beating in today's elections...especially on some major issues.

I voted, but not much on the ballot here in oregon. The big thing near me was in Washington state where they voted to privatize hard liquor sales instead of having it controlled by the state. Hopefully that will be on the next ballot here in oregon.

There are around fifty political parties in the U.S. that do not have an R or a D beside their name. In addition many states have referendums on the ballot and referendums are not people...and some of those referendums are of major import.

What difference does it make to you if controlled by the state or privatized? What are the pros and cons of the issue?

State run Liquor Stores:
1) Limited brand selection.
2) High prices
3) Stores keep bankers hours.

Privatized Liquor Stores:
1) Huge brand selection
2) Lower prices
3) Stores stay open as long as legally permitted.

It's a no brainer really.

Wish they would get rid of it in Canada, fucking $3.20 for a 473ml/18oz can

Luckily, I make my own for about $0.80c per can

I guess that is what my absentee ballot was for. I forgot I had sent that in. All we had here was for a community college board or something like that.

Basically what Greg E says. At it is now the state owns all the liquor stores. They aren't open on Sunday and they are only open certain hours. They control the prices and what is available, although I think you can special order stuff.

With it being privatized there will be competition which should bring prices down and increase selection. It will also make it more convenient. If i want a bottle of vodka I can pick it up at the store while I am grocery shopping and I won't have to make a special stop.

Those opposed to it say that having booze more readily available will lead to more underage drinking and more DUIs, but I don't think I buy it.

We have government-controlled alcohol here in Canada (Ontario) and basically everything you stated is true.

In the past few years they have started allowing certain retail stores to apply to become "agency" stores that can sell alcohol (usually convenience stores do this). It has helped somewhat, giving us more places to buy from, but they still restrict the hours they can sell and the prices won't change.

1. don't see how it will increase the brand selection.. shelf space is limited (they have to either drop wine/beer brands etc. that they currently carry to add in the alcohol etc) and stores will go with what sells the most

2. Yes, the prices might go down but then it's in the stores best interest to stock the movers.. see #1

3. Always nice.

You missed a couple pros/cons... A pro with state run is that it employed a bunch of people and put real profits in the coffers of the state. Cons.. Those people will be out of a job now and it's a big maybe that the same amount of revenue will actually be generated.

There's also the argument in terms of Washington's fledgling wine industry that it could end up damaging it with the volume discounting etc.

So in the end, privatization benefits big business and the "hardcore" drinkers. Doesn't make it the best decision though when everything is taken into account. But given Costco pretty much "bought" the vote it shouldn't be a surprise that what might be truly best doesn't get done.
