New car purchases starting in June will have a mandatory black box installed

Quote:
Beginning in June of 2011, all new cars manufactured and sold in the United States will be required to have a mandated black box device installed, which can be used to monitor several different physical and technical data points.

On May 24th, a report on the new regulatations to be implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) next month expands the program that in February was just in a consideration phase.

That's great. Something else I'll have to pay a mechanic to do, remove that box. Fucking Congress has their heads up their asses. Take forever to do anything, but this goes from consideration to passed in 4 months.

This is one fucked up government.

Don't they already have a similar box in cars that tells information about a wreck such as gas pedal position, speed, brake pedal pressure, etc? Maybe it's just Mercedes type cars but I know I heard about it.

I know the Bugatti Veyron or something reports you to a datacenter if you go over 200mph.

Outstanding. In the event someone hits my car, the police will know it's their fault and not mine. Sweet.

wow what a circle jerk to find the actual source to this information and surprise:

Update 5:30 p.m. May 24: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will require that all new vehicles have an event data recorder. The agency is at this point only considering such a requirement.

so you are safe for the time being.

The simple solution is to buy an import.

Only if both cars are recording themselves.

your cars OBD2 computer (all cars built after 1996) already logs everything. engine rpm, airbag deployment, speed, error codes, check engine light trips, etc. only way to clear its memory is to disconnect the battery terminal for about an hour

I think this is great, it will save our government tons of money and ultimately benefit the economy. Just think, before this the military would have to search for who knows how long to find a family that was driving in their car. Many costly resources would have been used. But now, combined with the National Defense Authorization Act, indefinite military detainment without trial can be streamlined and cost effective. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

Data privacy is such a major item in the news regarding the Internet. Furthemore cause for legislation to restrict its gathering and use.

However, when it comes to the government mandating data retention of its citizens' activities citing an imminent threat to public safety justifying behavioral conduct a legitimate government interest -- some line must be drawn.

Not to be biblical <LOL> but what's next ? RFID implants in the forearm in the name of public safety?

Not true on the clearing of data.
We just bought a new scanner for our shop that will pull historical data no matter how long the battery is disconnected. Disconnecting the battery only clears recently set error data, usually stuff that turns on a check engine light.
