They weren't going to sell it originally. Maybe they were thinking of making a return at some point in the future.

I have no idea how much they make, I would be interested to know, but it won't be a huge amount. For those who already have a similar network, it will have a value for them in a number of ways

Like you say, one could have either left it up and running without updates, or just replaced it with a basic leg affiliate page that would bring in some easy pocket money without any ongoing maintenance
