Gary Carter - RIP

Enjoyed so much the years were I could see him play at Jarry Park ... with Coco Laboy, Rusty Staub ... what a team !!!

Dead at 57 !!!!

MONTREAL - The lights went out for Hall of Fame catcher and former Expo Gary Carter on Thursday after a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

Carter, 57, was nicknamed “The Kid,” but his teammates also called him “Lights” because of his broad smile and ability to perform in front of the camera.

In 2003, Carter became the first former Expo to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. But apart from his baseball skills, he was also a model citizen and family man.

In a 1982 interview, Montreal player agent Gerry Petrie, who had Carter as a client, described the catcher perfectly.

“Sincerity, honesty, wholesomeness – he’s the kind of guy you want your son to be,” Petrie said. “And it’s real. Gary is no phoney. He’s one in a million. He loves his family, God and baseball.

Carter and Bench were my all-time favorite ball players. He was one of the few really good guys in sports. To bad ...

So sad I remember watching him when I as a young kid growing up in Montreal.

Always had that big broad smile and so athletic.

One of the good ones. Only 57. damn.

RIP Gary

As a life long Mets fan and baseball fan this is very sad news. "The Kid" was always one of the good guys in the game as well as a great player. His highlights from the 86 series will play forever.

RIP Gary

Sad stuff.

On another note, and unrelated aside from the fact that he played for both of the franchises, who do you think would win a 7 game series - 1986 Mets or 1994 Expos?

Sucks, really such a shame he was way too young. One of my heroes as a kid growing up in the NY area as a diehard Mets fan. Remember Game 6 of the '86 series, 2 outs, he had a clutch single to keep it going. The rest is history. RIP Kid.

RIP Gary!

It was a sad day when you left Montreal....now, it's another sad day for all baseball fans who had the chance to see you play......

I wonder if the Mets will retire his number, or the Nationals? Can't see the Nationals doing it because they've all but abandonned the Expos' history. He was a genuinely good guy, too. On and off the field. A shame.

86 Mets for sure. That was a great coked-up team, except for Gary Carter. Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, Mookie Wilson, Nails, Straw, Howard Johnson, Doc Gooden, Roger McDowell

'86 Mets had more stars than the '94 Expos but the early 80's Expos teams Carter played for had as many greats as the '86 Mets.

I wondered if there was a thread about him. Heard the news the morning after it happened. He was one of my alltime favorite players. Brain cancer, dead at 57, he was only a mere 8 years older than myself.

Luckily I got to see him in a couple of games at Jarry Park back in '76 while I was in Mtl for the Olympics. Highlights I took away from those games were Carter, Larry Parrish, and that funny old guy in the stands who sold bags of peanuts in the shell and threw them to you and you throw the coins back at him. The guy always got the coins, and he somehow delivered those peanuts right to you every time.

Great memories. R.I.P. Gary Carter.

Gary Carter was one of the only reasons I actually followed the Expos - not a baseball fan, but was still proud of our franchise and went to games because of Carter and Bill Lee... for completely different reasons.

Also enjoyed watching him demolish the cubs when they were the keystone kops of baseball lol!

RIP

:D
