Shipping gold coins, Who to use.

Just got off the phone with Fed Ex and UPS, neither will "insure money" .....

Anyone here ship and insure valuable coins before? This is within the continental US.

If they don't "insure money", will they insure "decorative yellow discs"?

USPS Registered Mail insures up to $25k per package. You are sending collectables and not gold coins or "money". Granted it can take up to 21 days for them to deliver the package, it will be fully insured if it gets lost. Keep in mind that people lose their job over losing a registered mail package because it is signed for every step of the way.

You can ship FedEx or UPS but you need to claim it as a collectable and not "money". They will not insure your package so you will need to get an outside insurer.

I used to work in the business of collectables and have shipped millions of dollars worth of coins and currency.

Yep, believe it or not USPS is what all the gold dealers use. They ship tens of millions in coins every day.

Thank's guys, never thought of the USPS. Just got off the phone and they charge $48.25 per 25K. Sounds pretty cheap as well.

I don;t know if they still do it but diamonds used to be just shipped in a envelope. Sometimes millions of dollars worth.

CNI in Los Angeles http://www.golddealer.com are honorable men who you will never have to worry about doing business with. They have good buy/sell prices.

Being graded helps a whole lot if you do have to make a claim. Once they are graded they instantly become collectables.

Good luck with the sale.

Final step in an estate liquidation. Working with relatives and money always sucks.

My GF runs a couple gold stores, they mainly use USPS, but the others as well on occasion.

just make sure you double or triple box it, in good boxs, or even put it in a strong plastic container, then double box it. Heavy loads go inside of sealed buckets, then get triple boxed.

Post Office only $25K

When I worked at the PO, you could buy Registered mail for ANY amount. I once handled a bearer bond with $400 of postage, it was worth about $300K. Diamonds, gold cash was the only way to ship. For small town banks, cheaper than an armored car. For jewelers, better than a courier. Handled silver & gold shipments back in the early 80's metal rush. Many a day handled over $500K for the local dealer.
Actually read a true story of a bank robber who sent the proceeds home by registered mail so he wouldn't have the money on him if stopped by the police.
All the gold in Fort Knox was sent there by registered mail.
Each postal employee who opens a registered pouch or container must sign a log, then send a post card back to the prior sender, acknowledging the receipt.
Something is wrong if the PO is down to $25K liability. I used to curse every time I saw 2 employees in a truck. Meant the rider was packing a pistol & I would have to sign for a hand-to-hand. Hand-to-hands have a value of $100K minimum.
Idiots would rob the fast food places around us for a few dollars. There were days I had $100K and bitching since I'd have to triple count it before my supervisor could triple count it for deposit.
Too bad there isn't this kind on integrity today.
