sponsor selling my email to spammers?

when I sign up an as affiliate to a sponsor, I create an email address for that sponsor only,
something like "[email protected]"
I never publish that email anywhere or give it to anyone else but that sponsor.

after a few months of getting newsletters from that sponsor (which is ok) I start getting spam to that email from other sources.

what exactly is happening here? how do spammers find that email ?

They sell them, they share them, some of it you agree to in the ToS when you sign up, some you do not. This is online marketing, you are bound to get your webmaster account on a few lists. Some of the programs are really scummy when it comes to this.

I wonder if it even worth the effort of giving different emails anymore.
it does help to know which sponsors sell/share your email and which do not

Anyone who's read this far... you might as well just hit the back button now, because these bitches clearly won't be naming names. Why not? Heaven forbid a tag team of part time "reps" 2 months in the biz turn up to shout them down, conveniently ignoring the fact that the provider of their $400/month + commission paycheck is in the wrong.

Nothing new there.

Mailing lists are big business. Your email is an asset like anything else.

Some programs monetize all of their assets and databases effectively.

If you are referring to spam from other sponsors, it's quite common for affiliate managers to leave program 'A' for program 'B' and then use their old webmaster contacts at their new jobs.

What i think is even more odd is when a program opens a new program... and they import your account info into the new program.. that's happened to me a half dozen times without me noticing an initial notification..

and then some time later on I start getting emails with FHG codes and shit for the new program in my email. then I'm like "I don't remember signing up for that program, wtf?"... I log in, and my info is all in there.

lol

I guess this is what usually happens. Don't think many sponsors sell out webmaster emails without permission that would be just silly.

alot of times the affiliate software they use has backdoors built in for accessing this sort of data. One of the most popular adult affiliate program software had this happen. If you talk about it , they get all pissy , haven't heard anything about them doing anything to find or prosecute the persons responsible.. all we know is they used an admin account to steal data.

Yeah well, it's pretty much common knowledge that outside of a few key people, it is possible to fuck over virtually anyone in this biz with zero repercussions. As long as you can stomach a little bravado/whinging on the boards, you're golden.

Your doing what surfers do abd blaming the websites for selling your email address, I get people using email addresses like this all the time, and every nw and then get blamed for spam...Email are to valuable to me for me to sell, so I do not do it.

But what I do know, from looking at the emaiil logs from my email server, is that spammers send emails to every variation of name at a paticular domain name... SO why do you get spam... because some spammer saw one of his emails get through and added it to his good list...its that simple...

Surprisingly, data theft hasn't escalated to ID theft. Sponsors have plenty of personal info which could enable this possibility.
