Selling gold to a Pawn shop?

So my mom found an old jewelry box in the garage. It has a bunch of gold jewelry such as rings and chains either received as gifts or acquired over the course of decades. With the price of gold what it is she asked if going to a pawn shop was a good option since she doesn't trust sending them away to gold places on tv. Anyone ever sell gold to a pawn shop?

Have her get a quote from multiple shops before she sells.

All depends on the amount of actual gold is in the jewelry you mentioned. Get it appraised at a jeweler or something similar.

Pawn shops are easy, no hassle way to get quick cash, but most often pay relatively little compared to jewelry stores and private dealers.

Also, it would be helpful for her to sort out the jewelry by type and gold content (and if applicable, precious stones, etc); getting quotes on a few pieces at a time instead of all of it.

For sure. She'll get a lot more from a gold dealer or jeweler. (Jeweler, not retail store at the mall.)

Good suggestions on going to gold buying places. I have seen those around and assumed that they were mostly pawnshops so I'll have her step into a couple of them to feel out some offers.

yeah get offers, some places will pay out more for sure. You can figure out somewhat the worth by weighing the gold and looking up the daily price.

I can't understand how people bring their stuff to pawnshops. Unless you like throwing away money.

Go to a jewelry store. You would be surprised at what they would offer.

My wife took some old, broken jewelry into a jewelry store last winter and we were both surprised at how much they offered.

People that sell to pawnshops are the same people that get their power shut off for nonpayment

Many years back a friend of mine cruised into a couple pawnshops to see if there was anything watch wise that was interesting. I went along for the ride. My impressions of the stuff in those 3 I visited was that they were filled with what I consider junk. I don't care about guns or jewelry, or old laptops and shitty lawn equipment. lol

The clientele I saw in there selling shit appeared $5-$10 away from being broke and hungry. Certainly an interesting side of life to witness.

If you have several ounces of gold ... it will cost you about $200 to smelter it ... then the purity and the weight of the gold are not guesstimates.

But you may want to have a collector look it over first - to be sure there are no heritage pieces that are worth much more in their current state than smelted.

Some places may pay more, but watch for charges, and DONT TAKE A CHECK

The carat of the gold matters a lot in the buying and selling decision. Different places might give you a different price. Some might say your gold is not good quality enough. You could get quotes from many different shops.

Below is a sample gold carat chart:
