Divorce sucks

My friend is having a bad day. It's his 50th birthday today, his wife has filed for divorce, they just went through a bankruptcy, and his house was sold out from under him and has until the end of the month to move out.

That's got to suck.

If only that were true. Lots of guys in jail because they can't find a job. If the judge says he owes her money, he owes whether he has it or not. Totally fucked up. I have a friend who just went through this. Judge told him to borrow money from his family or go to jail for the weekend. He could have fought it, but he'd still have had to to the weekend in jail.

This day and age, your a fucking moron if you don't get a prenup... Unless your spouse makes more money and has more possessions

So many people I know got literally screwed by their spouse, more times its the woman who fucks over the man. I wouldn't even consider getting married without one. Sometimes things don't work out but I'll be damned if I have to give up half my shit I busted my ass for to some bitch

Just let him know it gets better.

A friend of mine who is 44 got divorced 2 years ago. He had been miserable in his marriage for several years and was miserable with the divorce. They didn't do a bankruptcy, but he got stuck with all the debt and a house that he had to shortsell. He was depressed and hating life. Six months later he ends up meeting his old high school girlfriend on Facebook. Back in high school they broke up because her family moved away and he hadn't really seen or spoken to her since. She had recently gotten divorced as well. The two of them met for lunch, the flame was still there and now he is married to her and happier than I can ever remember seeing him

Divorce is not the problem.

MARRIAGE is.

Why marry someone when you already know that soon or late you will DIVORCE?

In this current world its mpossible to stay with the same person for life.

I can never understand why people MARRY when they already know the end.

Period.

People simply don't do a good job of vetting their partners; and, they marry for the wrong reasons. The epidemic of divorce in America is a clear manifestation of the bad judgment so many people have.

And you can say whatever you want about "but people change" and all that shit, but the truth is a tiger can't change his stripes. The other person didn't change -- you just didn't accurately access the person in the first place.

I looked for several qualities before I chose my life partner: she had to be pretty, smart, have healthful habits, make sound judgments, not be a frivolous spender, have a good sense of humor and love to play, react well under pressure and stress and in crisis situations, be attentive to me and my needs.

I did a good job vetting, and we've been together 9 years now, have a 4-year-old, and often still feel like it's a new, fun relationship.

He's lucky he doesn't live in this corner of the glorious EU. The regional gov introduced a new "divorce tax" (unofficially known as the "misery tax"). The official explanation is they want to "encourage a warm and social society" and thus discourage people from getting a divorce. Result: if you sell your house so you can divide the money between you and your soon to be ex, you end up paying twice the amount of taxes you normally would when selling property.

I know some people that have been married three or four times. Yet others remain married to one person all of their lives. Not all marriages end in divorce.

People do change - in huge ways. I've been with my wife for twenty years and I look at the changes we've been through, and it's staggering. Both physical and mentally. In our relationship, my wife has become less adventurous while I've become a lot more adventurous. I was always "We shouldn't do this" or "It doesn't sound fun" where as now I'm the who pops the curb and drives through a field to get around traffic just because I can.

To make matters worse, the wife's father just died. So if the kids aren't upset enough about mommy and daddy splitting up PLUS having to move out of their house... Now they have to go to a funeral too.

When it rains it pours.

That's what I'm saying. To help cover his moving expenses (deposit on a new rental, etc) he took out $20k from his 401k. I'm trying to talk him into going to Vegas.
