Goddamn...This 5D Mark III DOES Shoot "Art" Style

Wow...I finally got my Canon EOS 5D Mark III delivered today.

First I snapped a quick pic. Full auto, no lighting other than the light switch on the wall. Wow. HUGE difference compared to my old original version 5D.

And of course I was chomping at the bit to see if I could shoot a cinematic looking piece of footage with that depth of field look that all the "Art Porn" sites use.

I wasn't sure what was going to happen. I figured I was going to really have to do a lot of setting in manual mode, etc. to get everything looking right.

But I was wrong. I went full auto, set the camera to 1080p at 23.97 fps, and using my 2.8 24-70mm EF lens shot a 20 second piece of footage of Claudia Marie sitting in a chair talking to me.

HOLY SHIT. No lighting (just the light switch in the room). No tripod....I just held it still in my hand (I'll use a tripod when I shoot for "real"). And all I did was push the "AF-ON" auto focus button and then started recording.

Amazing. She is in perfect focus. Meanwhile everything behind her is out of focus and there is a definite beautiful depth of field going on.

I didn't have to do ANYTHING, but point and shoot.

I'm playing Friday night at The Bikini Bar here in Vegas, so I won't be able to do anything until the beginning of the week. But I'm going to shoot me a "Big Tit Milf Art" scene with this monster and show y'all this next week.

It really is amazing. And with this camera in my hands...I could shoot that "art" porn stuff so damn easy.
It was far easier than shooting "normal" style. No lighting needed. I'll use a tripod. Shoot a couple of minutes in one spot. Stop. Set up the next place and distance I want to shoot from...shoot a couple of minutes. Stop.
Rinse and repeat and transition it all nice and pretty in the editing.

This is a VERY cool camera. And as I said...I'm not even using any of it's myriad of manual settings. I just turned it on. Clicked it on "auto" (which I have never done before with any other camera) and just hit "record" to see what was gonna happen.

I figured it would look like shit.

I had no idea it was going to do all the grunt work for me! Damn..full auto, camera on a tripod, no lighting needed....I'm starting to like the idea of "art" porn. heh-heh
And I rendered it out to a working .h264 .mp4 and it looks freakin' beautiful.

Hahahaahaha, good luck. After really delving into that camera and shooting it you are going to take back everything you said about it being easy. It is beautiful though. Its a tool. No one is perfect. It is right for many things though.

I don't do any shooting at all, other than the wife and kids. After reading this thread and looking at the specs of that thing, I seriously want one.

The retail price of $3,499 is about what I bring in every 2 weeks but seems like it'd be a good investment.

one reason i don't find the x-art style videos hot, all that stopping and starting doesn't allow the talent to just go at each other while ignoring the camera as much as possible.

If a camera made a good pornographer, people would not be producing bad porn. The camera is the easy bit.

You're gonna want put that bad boy on a rig of some sort if you keep doing video handheld. There are a TON of nice options in that department these days.

I just picked one of these up for less than $1k.

X-Art style, or natural light at 24p as the rest of us call it.

So this is not a true autofocus that can follow the subject as it moves through fore- to background?

hilarious

Now I just have to find those pots that will make me a culinary master like Emeril Legasse!

The greatest thing about Art is that only artists can make it, while everyone else will be left in the dust thinking gear makes any difference.

Gear does make a difference. You can't shoot gorgeous porn style with a 100$ light system and a 120$ camera.

All a camera is a magic paint brush with a button that does the work for you. I mean it's not like the photographer mixes the colors and stuff, the camera does. You can design a set and prepare a girl but the camera paints it.

It's like an artist that has a magic button on a paint brush that does everything you point it at

This argument will never end anyway until the end of time

It's a knockoff (from India or China) of a RedRock Micro rig that runs almost $4k. I have a smaller one as well that I bought for my DSLR and it was quite solid, so I had no problem considering this larger setup when I got my Sony FS100. This one is ideal for a DSLR as well, but for most people it might be overkill.

Also, neither of them come with the monitor. At least mine didn't. I'm sure you could find some on eBay that include the montior.

I'm not sure it's a max clip size, but I do believe that this one will record video uninterrupted for 30 minutes. The 5D MKII has a 15 minute time limit.

Nope. You need something designed to be a video camera to do that. Most comparable camera to the 5D that does this is the Sony FS100.

I still love good old gonzo style. They just fuck and keep switching positions until the guy is ready to cum then he takes it from the pussy to the face and blasts. So yes I agree.

You will be shooting X-Art quality content in no time like that

Get 2 more cameras running at the same time from different zoom levels and angles, and you just may be getting one step closer.

And if you seriously think X-art uses no lighting equipment, you are even more clueless.

x-art style is so easy to shoot. it is so easy that most can not figure it out. all you have to do is "LOOK" at the photos.

For the right amount of money i will teach the exact formula to x-art style.

I never said they don't ever use lighting. What I said was that the clip I shot had no lighting set up at all.

And yeah "ahoy"...I'm the "clueless" one. The guy who owned and shot everything for his own content company from 1997 to 2002...and shot for years before that...and shoots every week these days as well.
I think I got a handle on how to shoot. But thank you for your "expert" advice.

Anyway, I'm gonna shoot a "real" scene with it at the beginning of the week. I'll have it edited down and on the site within 24 hours of shooting it and I'll post up a link to the trailer for all the folks that want to see it.

A few things:

It will shoot a 30 minute scene when in movie mode.

If you want to take a photo while shooting in movie mode you simply hold the shutter button down and it exits movie mode and shoots a still...then you can return to movie mode. (and for a guy like me who has been constantly juggling a video cam rig with ring light, battery belt, wireless audio, and smallhd monitor with a still camera rig with flash...this is like being in heaven)

And no, I'm not gonna abandon my "regular" video shooting of course. It's still the best. We would quickly lose all fans if things got boring and there was no wild sex with me being able to move the vid cam quickly at different angles etc. and with "porn style" lighting.

My idea is to shoot an "art" type scene (and yes...I think I have the "artistic" ability in my pinky to do that) every once in a great while. And then to use the movie feature on the camera to shoot a lot of the intros to our scenes.
It won't draw as much attention in public that way.

As it is now....I have a big still camera rig, a big vid cam rig, a whore with giant tits and I'm juggling all that in public on the set up to the scenes. People start gathering around, etc.

But with this camera...I'll just take it off the rig. Shoot the stills and vid and be done in 5 minutes for the intros.

And Elli...goddamn you are smoking hot. Your question about autofocus. Yes, it has autofocus...but it cannot continuously change focus. So the key is to work within a certain parameter and distance for each sequence.
That's why it's no good for "normal" porn shooting.

As I said pay me money and i will teach you the formula. and no its takes much longer than 3 hours.

Even if I showed you how to light the sets, you still need the eye for the same composition which i doubt any others have. That is why x-art will lead the way with this style.

Candyflip,

am I correct in thinking your from New Orleans?

If so,

one of these days I need to ride over and let you preach to me about some of this camera stuff. Definitely looking for cheap options in making something look 24pish good like indie movie style or a good documentary style.

Just getting into it, picked up a Canon HF G10 to play around with. I chose a dedicated because it's more practical for a beginner. Don't know half the setting on this thing, so a DSLR would be far too much to eat.

If so,

one of these days I need to ride over and let you preach to me about some of this camera stuff.

I'm actually in NY and by no means a real professional like some of the folks here. I'm a student myself, studying Digital Cinematography and working on any production that will have me...so my knowledge is new and mainly attributed to the fact that this is my dream and my passion and I'm going all in. I sit, read, watch videos and absorb.

I like the Canon Vixia line. I shoot a local band on a regular basis and the guy that I work with has 5 of them that we set up around the venue. They definitely do the job in that situation.

Just because a camera can video under natural does not make that natural light good.

Light and the position of the model can be well lite or badly lite.

In the beginning of cinema when all was shot outside with natural light reflectors and arc lights were used to fill shadows and control the "natural light".

"X-art" is not lighting, it is just one lighting set up.

Lighting is were the lighting changes from shot to shot and scene to scene as an integral part of telling the story.

Fans of soft focus seem to not realize that it is a fad. Gregg Toland won Oscars with his Deep Focus Cinematography as in Citizen Kane.

Audiences will soon tire of videos half out of focus, like they did of fog filters in the 70s.

Anybody who wants a large sensor camera can have one for $400 as Sony have put their CMOS sensor in the NEX 5N.

Robbie, congrats for a new cam.

I also went FF lately, and i must say, it's not that easy as you think right now.
Every little movement, and the focus is somewhere else.
I have a regular HD cam, and i catch my self shooting much more with it, even if the quality is way less...but it's so much ease, and takes less time

Now i wanna get a rig and a follow focus, maybe with those it will be more simple, because the quality is really great.

Even with a rig and follow focus, it's a tough job better suited for a few camera operators...even locked down on a tripod.

Because shooting quality content is hard.

Yes, agree on 100%
Looks like 2-3 cameras it's the way to go, but it's became very expensive, and also the editing time it's a nightmare , so it's good for high end project, not for simple solo girl site.

You can shoot amazing cine type with that camera. But to get the cine look you have to shoot like they shoot a movie. No auto focus but you can get fast with it. My friend shoots the news and he only uses manual focus. Alot of run and gun news is like gonzo. its not planned.

To do gonzo with this camera would require a rig with a dedicated big focus adjustment and you would spend every millisecond constantly refocusing (which would of course by it's definition mean that there would be split seconds of UN-focus happening).

Naw...it's not really made for that at all. But as long as you stay the same distance back once you focus in..it won't be a problem.

And I have to tell you...as I said earlier, I did it it full auto. Just aimed it, hit the auto focus button, it focused in. And I shot. So I could definitely imagine that you could move about a bit and use the auto focus each time you moved without "stopping and starting" and just edit out the unfocused footage during the seconds that you were actually moving with the camera.

But cinema movies don't do that anyway. Their cams are all on cranes and move VERY slowly with their shots (99% of movie shots...the camera never moves, they just use multiple cameras and lots of editing work of course).

So to really achieve that cinema look...I think you wouldn't want to be moving and focusing. And since I'm a one-man show...I'll just move from place to place with it and reset.

It should work great like that.

Of course, I'm only gonna shoot movies with this VERY rarely. I'll stick to my vid cam and the style that brought me to the dance for 99.9%.
But when I do use it...it's just amazing what I saw it do on full auto with no lighting. And I'll prove it this coming week.

I'm going to shoot with it on full auto with NO pro lighting. I think you guys are gonna really be shocked and impressed with what this thing does.

If I were a freelance shooter and wanted to shoot for X Art, Met Art, ~insert name here~ Art...I'd buy one of these immediately. Then I'd move to Russia. I'd film those incredibly beautiful skinny teen girls there for a few rubles, use no lighting, no other cam. Just me, a tripod, and Russian teen whores.

Then I'd tell the company that hired me how difficult it is to shoot this stuff and laugh all the way to the bank.

Adam, I'm going to shoot a scene with it at the beginning of the week. Make it a full on "art" type scene. And I'll have the trailer up on the site within 24 hours after shooting it.

I'm gonna make sure to only do point and shoot in full auto with no tricks and not even any pro lights.

I've rarely been as impressed by a piece of gear as this camera did.

When I first turned it on...I had just put my EF 24-70mm lens on it. The camera lcd gave me a message asking me if I wanted use the profile for that lens that is stored in the camera! I did and it corrected for the aberrations of that particular lens right there as I shoot!

Just amazing.

The 5D Mk III will not be good for Gonzo style shooting.

The Canon XF300 is far better for Gonzo, incredible auto focus, and if you know what you are doing you can get a very cinematic look to your videos with the XF300 and XF305.
