LED Lighting For Video :::

Any of you producers using LED lighting to shoot video?

If so, how do you like it? How is the color?

I hear its pretty good. Especially the LEDs that you can change the color temp.

Me personally, I invested in Ari HMI's. Two 200 Lighthouse kits, Two 400 Lighthouse kits, two 575's with Lens kits and two M18's with 1200 and 1800 bulbs.

I can light anything in any situation. And i do.

Shit, if Hollywood uses HMI's its got to be good.

OHHH! HMI's are way worth it too!!!

Don't the LEDs cause some sort of strobing on certain cameras?

My camera in particular I believe has known issues with LED lighting and I have been told to avoid them.

I tried a small travel set of LED lights. Can't say I cared for the color, even after the white balance it had a slight tint to it that seemed off. But there was no heat and easy to move around, which for hit-and-run style shooting like we do is important. I don't think I would use them if I had the luxury of a studio or safe location.

No one's ever used gels before? The color temp of a light is irrelevant, all that matters is final output.

Richard makes decent gear and its not a mint. Shooting led is wonderful, no sweating your balls off in a hotel room. lol

Depends on the quality of the led, a better chance of that happening with cheaper leds.

i use them but dont like them, but battery life is good and they light everything up, but lots of hot whitespots. use filters or plastic bags/waxpaper to soften up. but still its a nuclear blast of white light at best. babyoil on the girls looks good with leds thats about it

I borrowed a few from a friend that he got cheap from Cowboy Studios. I was shooting some on location interviews. They worked pretty good, there was some color cast. But that could have been the build quality. Might not have that issue with higher end LitePanels.

The fall off was pretty dramatic so I cant say I'd use them for anything than stationary work.

Dean,

I use them all the time. Only way to go. More stable then Kinos and more efficient. Bulbs don't break. You can get them with a dial to get the perfect exposure and you can also do dual color banks so you can dial in the color temp as well.

I will probably replace all 4 of my Divas with them eventually.

Several brands sell the same lights, from the same factory in China. This place sells them without the 80% markup for marketing expenses:

cheaplights.com

We use sixteen LED cans for the bands.
