Seems some people really hated the opening, and others really loved it.

the first 20 minutes I watched I thought it was cheesy - it got much better though with the help of the great British rock music. Muhammad Ali was heart breaking to me as a kid who grew up with him being a larger than sport, larger than life almost, figure.
never heard of the Arctic Monkeys, liked them very much.

I thought it was pretty good. Sure, it didn't match the spectacle of the games in China. but the idea is to be different and they were celebrating the culture and history of the country.
At the very least you can applaud them for letting the real musicians sing their songs instead of having a better looking person lip sync it. The people who need to be upset are we Americans. The uniforms our people were wearing looked terrible. That freaking beret and the jacket made our athletes look like they worked in the Harvard coffee shop. And then to announce that the designer then had them made in China. We can't find someone to make 500 uniforms in the US? Pretty pathetic. |

& I liked the industrial revolution chimneys rising out of the ground It's one of those events where you'd "have to be there" to really appreciate it. |

It was pretty good. Watched most of it. At least Danny Boyle did not resort to cgi bullshit...
And the queen and james bond parachuted in. LOL. Cut em slack, they are in a financial depression. Like all the dimwits in US will be by years end. |

I had a good laugh at the German dignitary that was 'saluting' his team when they came out.
So did Camilla and Boris by the looks of it ![]() |

was VERY chauvinistic all about Britain, Britain, Britain when the Olympics should be about universality.
not a bad event but had America staged such a self-centered ceremony they would be getting slaughtered by the press right now. ![]() |

![]() Good one. The Olympics is about drugs, cheats and corporate control. I didn't see this but I might check it out, it's probably the only thing in the whole shitfest that will have any soul. I didn't see the Chinese one either, except their fake fireworks and fake kiddie singer, but I'm sure the Nazi opening ceremony was also considered The Shit in its time. It's not just murdering and suppressing their own people that totalitarian regimes do well, they can always be counted on to put on a big, extravagant propaganda showpieces. Apparently the Chinese had 56 ethnic groups depicted, via children in costume, but it turned out most of the kids were Han Chinese. Probably because most other ethnic groups in China have been 'cleansed' out of existence. If there's one thing for Brits to be proud of already it's their zero tolerance approach to drug cheats. The British Olympic Association banned two British drug cheats for life, but were disgracefully overruled by the so-called World "Anti-Doping"[sic] Agency, which in this case was pro-doping, and forced the Brits to back down on their ban. As such these cheats are in the British Olympic team, against the wishes of the British Olympic Association. Other countries don't even have the decency to try and lifetime ban their cheats. Says it all about the corruption and attitude towards cheating in athletics, sport and the Olympics. |

27m GBP on a fucking ceremony, when people are sleeping under sheets of cardboard on the embankment, and OAPs are dying every winter because they can't afford heating. I can't be the only one who thinks that's a terrible way to have your priorities? 13Bn GBP hosting costs - fuck, I'm very patriotic, and all for the whole sporting achievements, pushing body boundaries, and enjoyment it brings to millions upon millions, but 13 billion? That's embarrassing.

The last ceremony worth watching was Barcelona.

Was crap. still even they tried to tone down patriotism a bit. Industrialization, Social Security, Mr Bean.. this was a full on ode to Great Britain that belongs in a pavilion at the World Expo, not the Olympics. Watch it. |

It's the first opening ceremony I've watched all the way through for a long time and not just because I'm a bit but because it was more than just fireworks and banging drums.
There were some genuinely brilliant pieces during the ceremony, granted most of them probably would have gone over the heads of people around the world, however given the budget I think Danny Boyle did a brilliant job. |
