Revenue from tourists attracted by the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are forecast to add up to an additional £2.1bn.

its cost 10 billion.

so far hotels have found bookings down. shops are having to close as roads are shut. theaters say they need to shut as they are not expecting many people.

in london roads are shut and public trasport sounds like it sucks.

on top of that we now are having millile launchers all over.

this is not usa or china. the uk is never any good at these things. they end up rather poor and very expensive.

if anyone thinks this is going to be good, take a look at the year 2000 with the 'dome' were the queen and priminister sat in a cold tent siging. it was embarasing. they said that would be a sucsess. it closed days later.

The 2012 Olympic games opening will have great lights, huge bangs and the guaranteed surprise thrown in here and there, the Taliban are confident it'll be the best one yet.

Why should I care about the 2012 London Olympics?

The propaganda behind it was that everyone would rush out and become fit and it would make lots of long term jobs and bring money to London. It is unlikely any of these will happen. Of course after the event is over all politicians involved will claim its a success.

As with most (if not all) political schemes they have not set out any aims or targets to be judged by. An example could be that the aim of the Olympics is to increase employment by x amount. By not doing this it means that if just 1 job is made it can be declared a success.

But surly you say I should support the best of the British entering?

The point is that its not the best who enter. Its only those who can afford to. How many people can afford to buy a bike for £30k (or whatever it costs for such bikes) and spend each day practicing. Or even go running each day or whatever. Very few can. I would love to spend each day cycling. Those who are in are simply those who are wealthy. And some events are for the extremely wealthy (such as those horse riding ones). I may be living next to the fastest runner in the world, but because she/he has not the funds, they will never be in the Olympics.

On top of it being a rich persons sport, a lot of poor countries can often only afford a few people in the games. Thus the whole thing is a farce.

And why do we then have the paralympics? I am not sure why this is separate rather than being part of the Olympics. Should those who take part be disabled? After all someone who is blind or deaf can easily take part in the Olympics one would have thought by running with people who are not blind or deaf. Many events [LINK] in the paralympics I see no reason non disabled could not also enter, such as Wheelchair Basketball. Non disabled I presume can sit in a chair and play. Events such as sailing I am not sure why paralympics have a separate event to the Olympics as one presumes that someone disabled can be just as good as a non disabled person and compete together. The message paralympics gives me is that disabled people are to be separated as they are not quite as good as non disabled. I suspect in years to come they will consider the paralympics as a discriminative setup.

Surly too that the events of the Olympics will have no interest to anyone but the middle classes. Just as tennis in truth is a middle class sport and watched by the middle class. To be fair I am generalizing and of course one would suspect people of all classes will both love and hate tennis. However I would suggest that sports such as mountain biking, bmx, skateboard and such would be far more relevant to the ‘youth’. In deed this week I am hoping to get a BMX, and have more interest in that than watching rowing (a sport where a boat will cost several thousands of pounds).

So do I care about the Olympics? Of course not.

To me its simply a scheme for a few rich people such as Sebastian Coe to be given billions of pounds for them to indulge themselves in there own passion. Its a bit like a dictator building a palace for himself and claiming it benefits his people as they can enjoy looking at it while they beg for food.

As for the Ground-based air defense systems being put on London homes [LINK], its unbelievable. I am not sure there is ANY country in a non war situation that has mounted missiles onto peoples homes. If that was my home as soon as they had installed the missile launcher I would be up there with a steel bar smashing it up, and if I was arrested, so be it. But the police would have to put a bullet in my head as no way would I accept this being alive. I cannot believe this horror is being allowed in the UK. But then again most of the people there, will just take it, as they always do. In the UK the government can come to your home, do a big poo on your head and most people will probably say thank you.

Road closures during Olympic cycle events will cause “massive disruption” but many businesses will receive a boost, a Surrey council leader says [LINK]. A statement like this shows councils simply live in fantasy land. How can they tell if businesses will get a boost? For a start the roads are closed so logically customers will not be able to get to these business. Many people will stay away for the weeks its on. Its also presuming every business is a fast food joint. How will it help say an accountants? Of course it will not benefit an accountants. Also how will people who work at all the restaurants get to work if the roads are closed? And how will these restaurants get deliveries each day? In other words some council chap has simply made it up in his head that its going to be good for business. These are the same morons who think its clever to put expensive pay and display parking on the high street and fail to understand that all this does is push drivers to shop out of town.

I thought it was fantastic that the two lads went and grabbed the touch [LINK]. I think they were great. I hope that when I was there age I would have had the guts to do that. I am hoping someone else tries to put the touch out. I was annoyed that I missed it when it came near to me as I was going to throw a bucket of water over the thing and put it out.

By the way if you do live in London and are going to get a missile launcher on your home. Can I ask you, how does it feel to know that your as much worth to the government as dog poo on my shoe?

I still do not understand the point of the missile launchers? One presumes that if someone took over a 747 and plans to crash it into the Olympics, they are not going to be put off by missiles aimed at them. Surly its more dangerous to blow up a plane than let it crash. Blow it up and you have a ball of fire crashing to the Olympics. If it crashes it may not explode. Surly if someone wanted to harm at the event they would just de-rail a train or throw a home made bomb into the people stood watching the events.

9 Myths About the London Olympics

Rumor 1. Men have more Olympic sports than women.

WRONG. This year's games, with the scandal of adding women's boxing to the list for the first time, will have men and women competing in all the same sports. However, men still do get to compete in more medal events.

Rumor 2. All countries put aside their religious beliefs and come together for the games.
First, not all countries participate, just all the ones Americans have heard of. Second, religion actually led to the banning of the Olympics for over 1500 years, 393 A.D. until 1894, because the games were thought to celebrate Paganism, which Christians have successfully wiped out, according to history.

Rumor 3. The U.S. has the most gold medals of any country.
This is true. The U.S has 894 gold medals. The country with the second-most gold medals at 395 is the Soviet Union, which as of 1991, isn't even a country anymore. Amurica.

Rumor 4. Soccer and swimming are the best sports to bet on.
To each his own. I'd say the best bet is to put a dollar on the 2012-1 odds that the Loch Ness monster will be spotted in the Thames during the games this summer. Ladbrokes, a real gambling company based in England, offers this lucrative option, according to the Mother Nature Network.

Rumor 5. European economies are on the verge of collapsing.
I've heard this a few times, although I fail to see a direct correlation to the Olympic games. While only time will tell on this one, the logical conclusion is that the revenue generated by the Olympic games, estimated to be £10 billion by Llyods TSB, a big English banking brand, will insulate Great Britain for a bit and help neighboring countries. Points if you know how many American dollars that is.

Rumor 6. No one cares about the Paralympics.
Sadly, it's the 60th anniversary of the paralympics and this may be true. However, during the London Summer Olympics of 1948, injured WWII soldiers participated in wheelchair games on opening day, according to the London Councils 2012 Team. That's pretty awesome.

Rumor 7. Shaun Johnson is going to win her first gold.
She actually announced her retirement from gymnastics in early June because of a reoccurring knee injury, according to the LA Times. That means she will not be competing at the London Olympics. Moreover, she already has a gold medal for her beam routine in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Rumor 8. London is going to be crazy.
The people in London might display mentally strange symptoms, but the physical city is incapable of experiencing psycho-sensory phenomena. No citation needed.

Rumor 9. Terrorists are going to bomb London.
Umm, lets hope not. When people say this I wonder if they know something I don't. Sketch.

Crazy how th emedia manipulates things, and how people rely so much in the media BUZZ and the topics that the MEDIA decides to impose.

China sank an estimated 40 billion USD into their games. UK games won't even be close to the most expensive.

So yeah. Screw this thread. I'm sick of everyone whining about money all the time like it's the most important thing ever or debt like even the tiniest bit is going to destroy the world.
I always look forward to the games, and am very much interested to see what the UK does with these ones.

I probably won't watch any of it. None of it interests me, and i'm already sick of all the hype. I don't give a shit if a person from one country can run a fraction of a second faster that a person from another country...

Some facts..

Embarrassing: Olympic security firm G4S has said it can't guarantee it will have enough security guards. The military was already providing up to 13,500 personnel for the Games, including 7,500 for venue security.

MASCOTS: The zany antics of mascots have been an integral part of major sporting events of recent years (see Berlino, the mascot bear of the 2009 athletics world championships), and London 2012 will be no different. Look forward to the, er, outrageous shenanigans of Wenlock and Mandeville: two cyclopean drops of steel with a healthy love of sport and a free rein to write on Twitter.

OPENING CEREMONY: While Beijing may have had a representation of the Great Wall formed by thousands of performers and spacemen floating up to the Bird?s Nest roof, London proudly show off £27m-worth of farm animals, a cricket pitch, fake clouds and maypole dancing. What could go wrong?

CLOSING CEREMONY: For the more curmudgeonly among us ? this can?t come soon enough. Sadly for them, the title of A Symphony of British Music, which will take in 50 years of musical heritage, suggests that we may be have to enjoy the rhythmic dancing of veterans Cliff Richard once more.

TRANSPORT CHAOS: While much is made of the transformation of London, there is nothing that Brits love better than a bit of hand-wringing and fury over gridlock and delays. Whether this will happen for the GB Women?s football match against New Zealand in the first event in Cardiff is anyone?s guess.

RAIN: While the most recent Games (Sydney, Athens, Beijing) could mostly be relied upon to be dry and sunny, London and its environs cannot. Expect scenes of sodden athletes miserably looking at the camera, and the phrase ?the weather has not dampened people?s spirits? to feature a great deal in this Olympics.

MCDONALD?S: It could almost be considered an Olympic sport in itself. At an event that features the fittest athletes on the planet, official sponsor McDonald?s has responded and will put its largest outlet in the world in the Olympic Park... presumably so that athletes can watch the less energetic of us sample the fast-food giant?s wares.

NO MARRIAGE, PLEASE: Olympic organisers have slammed the door on any competitors hoping for the fairytale London wedding of their dreams, by restricting their visas so they can?t marry. Keep an eye on any that hope to flout the rules, though.

OLYMPIC STADIUM: After a tendering process with the clarity of mud and a £537m price tag, the Olympic Stadium is under pressure to impress when the athletes start in earnest. But gloominess won?t be a feature (hopefully), as the Stratford beast boasts 14 lighting towers at 70m high, supporting 532 lights.

This time next year it will all be over, except for the legacy. A stadium that will cost millions a year for nothing much or sold to a football club who don't want to share it.

Plus the British tax payer repaying the debt.

The government acknowledged the extent of the bungling and announced it would be adding 3,500 additional troops to the 13,500 already committed to security duties at the Games.Lord Coe, the chairman of the London 2012 Olympic organising committee said that he could not rule out asking for the current deployment of 17,000 to be increased.

Every city/country that's held the Summer Olympics has regretted it - Montreal/Quebec I believe is still paying off the debt in some way from the 1976 Summer Games. Atlanta because of Coke paying a big part of the bill may have fared better. LA the same because they were run the right way. It's the cities/countries who get sucked into this fantasy that hosting the Summer Olympics will put them on the map as world class that end up trying to impress the world and run up ridiculous debt doing so.

The IOC is a totally corrupt organization run by European aristocracy and filled with lowlifes on the take and the corruption goes on in the national Olympic organizations of all the countries who are part of it, then down to the politicians of the city/state/country hosting the games who siphon off more money for themselves and their 'friends'. And the dopey citizenry eats it all up and cheers with pride until the circus leaves town and they're left with the bill. Think of what that kind of money could do if spent on things the average person could make use of.

On tv a lot of people are saying that they have got tickets but now do not want to go as they have been told to turn up several hours before due to all the security.

so now we have the army taken over security who are having to live in tents. in the uk its cold and raining. they are suposed to be on holiday but forced to do the security. they are not getting paid any extra.

at the same time bus drivers are on about strike if they do not get a huge bonus.

Competitors told Olympic Park isn't ready just TWO WEEKS before opening ceremony:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...-ceremony.html

its a real merss and its getting worse each day.

Wow dude, you are so narrow minded it's bordering in being quite funny! Sure, the equestrian sports are solely for those with cash - but do you really think that the Jamaicans who are currently dominating world sprinting are rich? Of course not! Their training facilities are in fact absolutely terrible...but they persist and if they have enough natural talent they get noticed and then get sponsored. The old soviet bloc countries didn't have money to lavish on their competitors, but rather instilled a certain kind of discipline. For other countries there is a sense of community which help their talented individuals.

Even more ignorance! A disabled person is not just either deaf or blind! There are a wild array of categories (with physical as well as mental disabilities), and if any of those persons are good enough they can compete with the able bodied. Point in case Oscar Pistorius[sic]. The paralympics are there to foster the same spirit as what we give the more abled, and is actually an INCLUSION rather than your point of marginalisation.

Surly too that the events of the Olympics will have no interest to anyone but the middle classes. Just as tennis in truth is a middle class sport and watched by the middle class. To be fair I am generalizing and of course one would suspect people of all classes will both love and hate tennis. However I would suggest that sports such as mountain biking, bmx, skateboard and such would be far more relevant to the ?youth?. In deed this week I am hoping to get a BMX, and have more interest in that than watching rowing (a sport where a boat will cost several thousands of pounds).
The basis of the Olympics is track and field, with other events being added and removed every year due to voting and/or sometimes popular demand. I never knew class-ism was rife in the discus or the 100m sprint...but it seems that you're in the know on that one!

Quote:
So do I care about the Olympics? Of course not.
Then why waste your time writing about it. You obviously care enough to have a stance.

To me its simply a scheme for a few rich people such as Sebastian Coe to be given billions of pounds for them to indulge themselves in there own passion. Its a bit like a dictator building a palace for himself and claiming it benefits his people as they can enjoy looking at it while they beg for food.
Your comparison of the Games to a dictator or his actions in any sense even further impresses on the reader how incapable you are of coherent thought processing.

Oh...the horror! This isn't the Hindenburg disaster, but rather a safety and security measure designed to prevent an aerial attack such as the September 11th attack. These missile sites are the ones that are strategically located to provide the best cover with a 360degree view. There are also others which you don't know of, so I guess that's more horror to keep you up at night. Have you thought about all of the armed personnel that could be near you during the Games? Wow, I'm surprised you haven't tried to smash any SO19 personnel with your steel bar every time you've gone through Heathrow airport. Those MP5's they carry to protect you must fill you with rage!

Quote:
I thought it was fantastic that the two lads went and grabbed the touch [LINK]. I think they were great. I hope that when I was there age I would have had the guts to do that. I am hoping someone else tries to put the touch out. I was annoyed that I missed it when it came near to me as I was going to throw a bucket of water over the thing and put it out.
This point of yours made me lose absolutely all respect for you, as you clearly have no respect for others or their traditions. What is it to you that a ceremony is taking place that makes so many others happy? Do you also wish you could knock coffins over in funeral homes? Surely not. Both are ceremonial activities though that have meaning for others, and if you don't like it then just don't take part. There's no reason to promote malicious activity that just spreads disdain. Shame on you, Sir!

so the Jamaicans are in the sailing events are they?

and are you saying that the Jamaicans have the same nombver of people in the events as the usa has?

running is the low cost event.

so you think that if a plane was taken over and flown over the olpimpcs (not realy likly) that you think they should blow it up and turn it into a firebomb and land in the stadioum?

1. what has traditions to do with anything?

2. i think you will find most people in the uk now are against the olipics. today london roads are shut down so people cannot get to work.

i do not think you can do that.

ie, 'bbc' is copyrighed but you can write about the bbc.

i suspect they may be trying to stop people writting anything negative as you just know things will be bad.

So did any of you go and see the torch if it went to your area, it seems to have a lot of support where ever it went even though this is one of the worst summers we have had in a long time
