Female Pornstars Are Healthy, Happy

YNOT ? A new study confirms something female adult performers have known all along: Psychologically, porn stars are as healthy as or healthier than other women. Despite what outsiders believe about rampant abuse and exploitation of women in the adult entertainment industry, the study indicated starlets possess higher self-esteem, a better quality of life and a better opinion of their body image. In addition, on the whole they?re more positive, more sexually satisfied and ? get this ? more spiritual.

Not surprisingly, they also have had more sexual partners than their civilian counterparts.

Published in the Journal of Sex Research, the study was conducted by researchers at Shippensburg University, Texas Woman's University and the now-defunct Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation. Researchers found no evidence to support common myths: that female performers are damaged goods, come from desperate backgrounds or are less mentally balanced than typical women.

?Some descriptions of actresses in pornography have included attributes such as drug addiction, homelessness, poverty, desperation and being victims of sexual abuse,? the journal article noted. ?Some [outside the adult entertainment industry] have made extreme assertions, such as claiming that all women in pornography were sexually abused as children.

Stereotypes of those involved in adult entertainment have been used to support or condemn the industry and to justify political views on pornography, although the actual characteristics of actresses are unknown because no study on this group of women has been conducted.?

All the porn girls I know personally (and that's a lot) are smart, well adjusted people.

It's the people who have the sexually repressed hangups and try to judge them and invent "reasons" for these women to be having sex on film that are the ones with the real problems.

These women make bank for doing something they will do anyhow... Saying they are degraded doesn't make sense; They all have sex. Some of them just get paid to do it on camera.

I shoot almost exclusively in the Asian-American niche, and most of the girls I work with appear intelligent and well-adjusted. There have been a few that were space cases, but it didn't have to do with them being in porn (some people are just flakes), so I simply never hired them again.

Twice I've sent girls home because I felt that they were on drugs, or something was not right with them (I don't allow drugs on my sets), but that is extremely rare. Most folks I deal with try to conduct themselves professionally when we're working.

I figured all of the stories you hear about all/most porn girls being drug addicts, etc., pertained to the non-Asian girls in the industry, since most of the girls I have worked with indicated that they came from good backgrounds, and they wanted to get into the industry. There have been some that came from difficult backgrounds, and had to overcome diversities, but they all saw porn as a step forward and away from their past situations (I generally care about people, and work with many models several times, so we talk about such things from time to time).

I know girls that have completed their college degrees while working in porn, including one of my spokesmodels that earned a degree in Computer Science, financed primarily by her work in adult. Several girls have come to set with their textbooks when they knew it was going to be a long shooting day with breaks.

Anyway, nice to finally see some research, as opposed to all of the conjecture and untrue villification of the industry, mostly coming from ex-porn girls like Shelly Lubben who was a drug addict and prostitue before getting into the adult biz (and still seems to be making her living off of the back of the industry).

Lubben stated that she was sexually abused at the age of nine and worked as a prostitute from age 18 to 26 to support herself and her child.

Shelley already had full blown alcohol and drug addictions (and apparently mental issues), long before entering the adult biz (she didn't get into the adult industry until she was 24, and she quickly washed out). I guess it's a lot easier to raise money blaming the adult industry for her problems than to take personal responsibility, plus she still gets to hang around with porn people and act like a pornstar - if you've ever seen Shelley carry on at a show (and she is a constant fixture at adult industry events), then you know what I mean).
