Really?

It's commonplace for a woman to have three kids before dying suddenly at the age of twenty?

Sure. Happens all the time.

It's insurance.

It doesn't literally mean that it's an insurance policy. Fuck.

I "insure" that I'm going to live every day by eating a meal. Doesn't mean that is like an insurance policy.

Look...I am WELL aware of what FICA stands for. I've paid more in my FICA taxes (social security or: "Federal Insurance Contributions Act" than most here have as I have paid the maximum EVERY year.

But even if you want to LITERALLY refer to it as insurance...it was never intended to be WELFARE.

When I take out an insurance policy...the policy pays ME (auto, health, theft, mortgage insurance) and whomever I personally have set up to get payments (like a life insurance policy)

When people are getting Social Security checks who have not contributed to the system...then that is WELFARE. And somebody has to pay for it. It's not "free".

That's all I'm saying.

Social Security is supposed to be YOUR money that YOU put in coming back to YOU in your retirement.

Anything else is welfare and is coming out of all of our pockets to be redistributed to others.

You can argue whether that's a good thing (which you obviously think it is) or not. But it's WELFARE plain and simple. And it's no longer a FICA tax at that point. It's just a plain out TAX and should be counted as part of the tax rates that we pay because that's what it is.

It's taking my money and keeping me from spending it on my own family NOW and giving it away to other people who did not earn that money.

That is welfare and "handout" all day long, every day.

It's there for YOU when YOU need it, too. If you're lucky, you won't ever need SSI disability - and that should be considered a good thing, not some kind of screw. And everyone who can work pays in - so if they collect, how do you see it as YOUR money, and not theirs? We're all fucking in it together.

Life is unpredictable, and can be very cruel. Don't think "it" can't happen to you. You never know when you can end up very down on your luck. That's what these programs are for - to provide at least some protection.

I think you already know the answer to that if you can think clearly about the subject.

I am required by LAW to put aside money for my old age. The govt. collects it.
I retire. I should get my money back.

Theoretically that is what is supposed to happen. I put "x" amount in, and get "x" amount back.

Social Security would break even and be solvent.

But when I put "x" in...a hundred thousand other people put in a tiny amount...then trouble starts.

Which is why they have to keep figuring out ways to keep Social Security solvent.

Now, if the big plan is to take MORE of my money to pay for freeloaders...then it's welfare.

If you like the idea of that and think that you and I should pay for other people...then that would be another discussion/debate.

Otherwise...NO, MY money is not "Theirs". Their money is theirs. If I pay in a couple of hundred thousand...I should get it back when I reach that age.

If not...then it's just a straight up tax for welfare. Nothing more.

Dude, you toss out this scenario, the chances of which happening are so astronomically improbable - there's a better chance I'll get mauled by a fucking grizzly bear walking down Passyunk Avenue - like it's the rule and not the exception for social security benefits when the vast majority of people collecting are retirees who've payed into it their whole working careers.

Oy. You will get it back. And if people aren't contributing - they won't.

If someone is working and putting in less because they work in fast food - they get less.

[QUOTE]Social Security benefits are based on the earnings on which you pay Social Security payroll taxes. The higher are your earnings (up to a maximum taxable amount, currently $110,100 and slated to rise automatically to $113,700 in 2013), the higher will be your benefit.[/QUOTE

Happy now?

And if someone is totally or partially disabled, and are eligible for SSI disability, then yes, it's possible that they will take out far more than they contribute, particularly if they are disabled at a young age. Lucky them, right? Living off our sweat. They've got it made. Must be like hitting the lottery.

So for that matter and based on your definition, medical insurance is welfare if you do not need medical assistance. Car insurance is welfare if you do not get into any accidents. etc etc..

As long as we are at it, we should probably get rid of fire departments, highways, roads, streets, street lights, police departments, the CDC, the health department, the military etc... etc.. if you do not feel you need their assistance either..

I paid for my kids to go to private school... why do I have to pay for YOU or YOUR kids to go to school? If you or your kids went to public school it sounds to me like I am paying your bills and you are on welfare.

If I did pay for your education, it is actually a good thing for the country.. The country is far better off with educated people than a bunch of illiterate hicks.. (so I suppose that type of welfare that I am funding does actually help me in the long run if it is helping the country).

No...me paying for my medical insurance is a bill I pay every month. Same with my car insurance.

If I pay for my car insurance and it somehow is paying YOU money and we have not had an accident together...then that would be welfare.

As for public education...I've owned my own homes since 1982. My property taxes have paid for a few generations to go to school already.
Do I think public education is vital. YES. Do I think only property owners should have to pay for it? NO.

What the fuck is wrong with you people?
I swear to God I never thought I'd see the day that people are clamoring to give THEIR money to a bunch of career politicians in Washington D.C. who are currently spending 10 BILLION dollars PER DAY...and borrowing 4 BILLION of it every day.

Times must be really hard for some of you to act like you have given up hope of ever making it on your own and cheering for govt. dependency.

It makes me sick. Slack bunch of motherfuckers.

JFC. Your car insurance DOES work in the same way - you're paying into a pool that spreads the risk over all who are insured by that particular company. The difference, of course, is that the pool is far smaller than the federal programs, and they're run for profit. Do you resent when your car insurance company pays a big claim to someone else they're insuring? After all, the company is paying it, in part, with YOUR money. Is that welfare?

As far as Social Security retirement benefits, if you live long enough, you'll collect. Simple. And as for SSI disability insurance, you're paying into the system, and you're entitled to the benefits if you ever need them. Pray you never need them, though. If you ever do, some asshole will probably look down their nose at you and consider you a welfare recipient living off of their hard work.

If you pay for your car insurance and never have an accident, but i get hit by someone else who uses your insurance company who has only had their policy for 3 days... your money will be going to me. Same with medical insurance, if you pay that and never get sick or injured, and someone gets a new policy and needs to be hospitalized, your money will be paying for them.

Technically renters pay those taxes via increased rental rates...
