That's worth watch for sure, the mood reminds pandorum and sunshine; event horizon tries to be more horror than sci-fi, but ends up less scary than alien or the thing (John Carpenter ed), so like a star trek episode with more gore and horror.

One of the best science fiction-horror films of the last 40 years, and that's saying a lot.

Blade Runner, Alien, Predator, Terminator... there's 4, not sure if they count as "science fiction - horror" but they are all classics compared to Event Horizon.

Event Horizon is a lot like Sphere (and a ton of other sci fi movies), where a ship takes over the crew and fights them for control, turning them against each other etc.

This only proves you don't know what you're talking about.

1)Blade Runner and Terminator are science fiction, not horror. I could also say that "The French Connection" is more of a classic than Event Horizon, but this would also be apples v. oranges.
2)In Event Horizon, the characters are not turned against each other. I will not reveal what is actually happening (spoilers) but your entire statement is incorrect.

there's graphic violence in both which would qualify in your made up genre...

django was the best western starring a black man with rap music in it in the last 50 years. Right? ;)

Ok but Sunshine is better, I just said same mood. Can be comparable to Pandorum with less special effects, or a star trek tv movie with more horror; anyway I did not liked Pandorum except the very start and very end scenes... all what's in middle in Pandorum is a boring pain to watch.
Regarding best sci-fi movies ever that's 2001 a space odissey, guys...
If want a rather unknown recent classic (non-action, all concept) sci-fi one, watch Moon, it deserve its 8.00 vote in imdb:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/

Of course no troll to post the Moon spoiler please.

Some of you guys need to get out more, or read more or something.

Maybe you can understand this Forbes article listing the top 10 sci-fi horror films of all time-
http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhugh...s-of-all-time/
They put Event Horizon rightfully at 7.

http://bloody-disgusting.com/editori...s-of-all-time/
Of which they name Event Horizon as number 20 in the top sci-fi horror films of all time although it is certainly better than some of the films they rank higher in that list.

It's worth watching for sure. Was a great movie to see on the big screen when it came out. Just looked it up on imdb and can't believe it's been out for 15+ years now. Damn.

i don't give a crap though, it works well in the film and it's more than the bulk of similar films are willing to muster.

You can judge a film by how well it stands the test of time (Metropolis,Invasion Of The Body Snatchers,Forbidden Planet,The Thing,Alien, etc) and Event Horizon still holds up today. The effects are great, the story/screenplay is well written and the acting is top notch.

IMO I think it's superior to Sunshine on a conceptual level, although I liked that film as well.

The one that always gets me is the original Alien. That move was made in 1979 and still holds up to many of today's movies on visuals. Was no CGI bullshit it was all hand build models, sets & costumes.

QFT, just like 2001 IMO. Hell you can go back to Metropolis made in the 1920's - that film still looks amazing and those guys were making up effects as they went along.

To this day I have not seen a robot who looks cooler than that robot from Metropolis.

I never learned a word of Latin but when i read some Latin sentences a lot of times i can figure out what it means (kinda).
So many words are used in English and Germanic languages.
I love to read about certain words, where they come from. In the end it all makes sense.
Just like names. So many names are the same in different languages.

Johnson in English, John's son. Jan's zoon in Dutch. Jansen. Jensen. I love that shit.

I spend hours on Wiki reading about it.

I'm totally into the Aramaic language lately.
I can read about it for hours.
It's the language Jesus spoke (if he existed at all).
It's pre-arabic and hebrew. Many names and words in the bible come from the Aramaic language.
The bible stories itself mean shit to me but the words they used are so interesting.
I LOVE how Mel Gibson in the Passion of the Christ used the original languages. Aramaic, old Greek and Latin.
I think Aramaic is a beautiful language.

When they looked at Mercury orbiting the sun in Sunshine i felt something, deep inside my stomach.
It's such a beautiful yet lonely sight. So close to our amazingly huge star that keeps us alive yet so tiny and alone.

The universe is an amazing place. And all this stuff is happening in our backyard.

The one with Larry Fishburne & Sam Neill?

I paid money to see it in the theater. Thought it was crap.

Watched it again recently. Still thought it was crap.

Btw, Gibson made that movie for 1 reason only and that is to show his hatred against jews.

A lot of good reviews.

Anybody seen it?

Do this : Watch it again, and be ready to pause it during the super-fast hallucination(?) bits. Some of the goriest makeup and images ever put to film are "hidden" in those scenes, like these:

That being said, it's an "ok" movie. It should have been better as it had alot going for it - good sci-fi idea, good actors, good horror, etc, but somehow it all seems to fall flat. I give it a big "Meh".

Pretty solid sci-fi/horror. It'd be a shame to miss it.

I loved it, thought some of the scenes in it were pretty freaky. It didn't get much attention back then but now it's gaining kind of a cult status.

About ancient sci-fi before of CGI who still stands, I agree about Metropolis, you would not say that's 1927, that's masterpiece, but everyone knows and agrees on that.

I'm not impressed by horror, and action is ok up to a certain degree... look Alien and The Thing, 95% of movie "nothing happens" and this is way more deep and scary. About 2001 a space odissey there 99.9% of movie nothing happens, it requires really a monk receptive status of mind, but it is rewarding (and tripping visuals, for who's into '60's).

However if you want to try even more anti-hollywood sci-fi, there's the russian stuff by Andrey Tarkovskiy, the original Solyaris 1972:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069293/

Note that in some versions they've cut the initial scenes with hypnotic car driving around tokyo and that's a crime, since you need watch driving in tokyo with basic electronic bzzzzzzzzz in background for some minutes to get into the thing. Can't skip or fast forward russian sci-fi!

But the real final mind trip of pure sci-fi (I say pure since no any apparent sci-fi, no aliens, space or technology, no action, nothing!), complete opposite of hollywood, it is Stalker, 1979:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/

Underrated as ranked just #214 with 8.1 vote, pretty unknown to the masses, Stalker it could be used as an subtle IQ + drug test, try it while watching those incredibly long scenes of water and grass waving..., or listen the talking.
After watch Stalker, re-watch the famous Blade Runner piece (guess who inspired from): "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion.", basically stalker is a whole movie like that piece, lots epic philosophical blah blah, water or rain or grass on screen for hours like you gone fishing, and electro wave sounds, made in soviet ruins with 20 dollar budget. Still unparalleled on its genre.

Yea I actually forgot about that stuff in EH. They did a lot of shit like that with quick glimpses of stuff, a lot like what they did in fight club.

Thanks for that link, I will have to check out Stalker.

Agreed, Solyaris is a masterpiece and ranks very high in science fiction movies.
I even liked the remake by Soderbergh, although it was not very well received critically.

Speaking of non-hollywood science fiction, you should watch "Primer" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/

Primer (the best film about time travel ever made imo) was made for 7,000 dollars and is so much better than most films that cost 50 or 100 million dollars (a perfect example is The Sound Of Thunder, also about time travel but totally screwed up from the original Ray Bradbury story)

I also recommend a film called "Moon" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1182345/ which lasted about one week in theaters because there are very few explosions, and a lot of pondering about the nature of existence and identity.

One of the best sci-fi movies in my opinion.
