A man attempting to rob a central Topeka liquor store with a steak knife bit off more than he could chew Saturday afternoon when the business? owner pulled a handgun on him.

The owner then held the would-be robber at gunpoint until officers arrived to arrest the man without further incident, Topeka police said.

Cpl. Chris Sturgeon identified the suspect as Joseph Vincent Eldringhoff, 27, of Topeka.

Officers were summoned at 2:33 p.m. to Charlie?s Liquor, 1235 S.W. Huntoon, on a report of an armed robbery.

First-responding officers arrived to find the liquor store?s owner detaining at gunpoint Eldringhoff, who was seated on the pavement in front of the liquor store.

Sturgeon said Eldringhoff became compliant for the store?s owner once the gun was aimed at him.

?He wasn?t going anywhere,? Sturgeon said.

The owner exercised good judgment in wielding his weapon, Sturgeon said, de-escalating a potentially volatile situation.

The failed heist began with the suspect walking into Charlie?s Liquor and pulling a ?large steak knife? on a clerk, demanding cash, Sturgeon said.

The business? owner then pulled his handgun, ultimately leading the suspect outside of the store empty-handed of the cash he sought.

Eldringhoff was booked into the Shawnee County Jail at 3 p.m. on suspicion of aggravated robbery and aggravated assault. A jail official said he was being held without bond."

New update, Government to ban all steak knives.

Please only use butter knives at owners discretion provided the butter knife is not longer then 7 inches and does not have more then 10 cutting blades at the end of it.
