With thousands of videos and 100 000s of photos, doesn't it just make sense?

because it's such a good idea, it can be applied to pretty much everything, making 'specialists' rather fucking retarded

but that brings up 'equality'.. so you need to have 7 billion equally educated individuals

and that really cuts into 'useless overpriced bomb droppers'

etc etc

i'm also not sure how random people analyzing random photos would help. at the least, limit the people involved to those that were there. random sleuthers on the internet = cluster fuck.

Because it's not a game of Clue or Where's Waldo...it's a federal murder investigation.

i don't have a problem with the authorities doing this, i think with some structure, why not.

on the other hand, the tools the fbi have at their disposal are very sophisticated and they have all available resources on this case.

They have been collecting pics and vids from people, even had homeland security at the airport asking people to download their pics and vids before leaving the country.

They also have software that will do a faster and better job then you could do with a million people.

Here's what the publicly say about their NGI system, but I assure you if they are making this public they are at least 5 steps ahead of this in private. http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/fin...biometrics/ngi

Is that how they do things in your country? I think you just raised the bar for stupidity on GFY.

This.

In NYC for example, there are so many cameras tied into the NYPD system that they can literally search for 'Person in red top 5'2 to 5'8 near X and Y street from Q to Z Avenue during Date Range and Time Range' to have the system provide a photo or video of every person matching the search from every 'traffic cam' and other device tied into to system.

The FBI doesn't need advice from [email protected] or direct access to images on his twitter account to get the data they need...

Yeah, there was a guy on CNBC this morning that said they were basically cataloging every person on that street and the software they use can analyze around 1000 frames or pics a second and again usually anything the govt. says publicly about capabilities they are really steps ahead.

They can have all the best tools, gadgets, and software they want, they still have limited resources; they could get the help of the public early in the investigation rather than waiting untill it gets (if it gets) to a dead end.

I don't expect baddog to understand this, after all he was born a few centuries ago, but I am pretty sure that it makes sense to many, definitely makes sense to me. I'm not saying that they should let the public solve the case, but rather ask the public gather and, to a degree, process the tons of information and digital files available.

With age comes wisdom; so there is hope, but at this point . . .

You never answered my question; is that how crimes are solved where you live. Is it a Lord of the Flies scenario?

What do you mean limited? How many people would it take to process 3.6million pics, cataloging each and every person based on facial recognition. There software could do it in a hour, no matter how many people you had you wouldn't come close.

Do they ask the public for help? Of course, here, you can help too, have you seen these people:

A suicide bomber killed 6 tourists not too far from where I live.

What do I mean by limited? How many of them are investigating this case? 100 people, 200, 500? Can their team do as much work as 100 000 peopel or more? No way.

If the latest face recognition / analytical software is so great, why do the Israelis still have people observing passengers at the airports? I mean, they can turn their computers and cameras on, run their fantastic software, and be sure that everything will be 100% covered.

Since your memory seems to be at the same level as your intelligence; the question was, do they get the citizens involved by putting the results to a vote - most likely suspect No1, 2, 3, and then have a professional investigator or whomever taking it from there?

What would these people be doing? I'm willing to bet they already who the guy(s) are and just tracking him/them down now. You certainly don't want citizens going out capturing felons. Some are lucky they can dress themselves.

They don't and they should. Do you think it's a really bad idea? That's what people thought about fingerprinting too, some dude in Argentine started using fingerprints to help solve crimes and pretty much everybody thought he was insane.

Software can process information with enormous speed, but it only looks for what is has been programmed for, people could spot any irregularity, and 100 000 people will do that much faster than 300.

i'm still wondering why you think the fbi needs to do that. they are not out of leads, by all accounts, they've pulled in every agent and resource available and put them on this case.

hell, now you want to add 100,000 random internet sleuths to that? that would not speed anything up.

hell, now you want to add 100,000 random internet sleuths to that? that would not speed anything up.
Wikipedia to the rescue - Crowdsourcing is the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or content by soliciting contributions from a large group of people, and especially from an online community, rather than from traditional employees or suppliers. Often used to subdivide tedious work or to fund-raise startup companies and charities, this process can occur both online and offline. The general concept is to combine the efforts of crowds of volunteers or part-time workers, where each one could contribute a small portion, which adds into a relatively large or significant result. Crowdsourcing is different from an ordinary outsourcing since it is a task or problem that is outsourced to an undefined public rather than to a specific, named group.

Why not? Hey, crowd, here are 100 000 photos, look for the following ..... ten days later, the FBI receives the say top 10 tips (as per the crowd), looks at them and either finds them useful or it doesn;t. It totally beats the traditional approach, which is "hey here is the hotline, give us a million leads and we'll take a year or two to process them all."

based on that def then, my orignal post, way back up there at #2 is valid. that's what they've done- gone to the public, requested they each person contribute a small portion (any video or pictures of the crime scene at the time around the crimeor any they feel may be important).

Are they select, trained, professional Israelis who know what to look for, or a large bunch of random of Israelis they found on the internet?

I am sure they just use immigrants that need work.

pretty sure they can analyze the contents of the bomb and the bag it was in. and then match it to an individual holding that bad via security cameras from the businesses on the block. someone cause an image of this person.
