link

A young girl sits in a DOG CAGE in the back of a pickup truck.

Police were alerted by stunned motorists in western Pennsylvaniam on Monday night.

The girl, aged 10, was later found unharmed.

Her mother, 29-year-old Abbey Carlson, and stepfather, Thomas Fishinger, 30, are now facing charges of endangering the welfare of a child.

Fishinger told police they had been driving home from his mother's house.

Police said they told them the girl had said she wanted to be with the dog.

'Police said they told them the girl had said she wanted to be with the dog.'

my daughter would have done this when she was 10, in fact when her dog was dying she slept out in the back yard with the dog... luckily none of you assholes saw that had her taken by child protective services $.02

Just because your kid wants something doesn't mean you should do it, if it's risky. Whether this was risky is another question. Probably isn't, statistically speaking, and far more dangerous things happen around the world every day without incident, but it's still pretty dumb to put a kid in a dog cage on the back of a truck. They shouldn't get anything more than a slap on the wrist about it though.

actually people are not allowed to ride in the back of a truck however that could be state by state and I have no idea of the laws where this happened

not really seeing what the issue is here. Yes I know there are seat belt laws etc. But when some of us were kids, riding in the back of a pickup truck was normal, and also fun. We also used to sit in the back of station wagons (without seat belts) lay on the shelf in the back window, sit in the front seat on our parent's lap, played with lawn darts etc.

It's just too bad that we have all been bubble wrapped for our own protection, and that unfortunately draws some of the fun out of life.

the highways and byways are safer because of the rules. the last thing i need to worry about cruising down the highway is some knucklehead coming in the other direction with a car full of kids climbing all over everything.

the rules are to protect the rest of us from the idiots.

According to state law it was illegal only because she was under 18. If you think about it the cage part was safer than if she was sitting lose and might fly/fall out of the bed.

"Twenty states have no laws prohibiting riders in the back of pickup trucks. Not surprisingly, most of these states contain substantial rural areas where pickup trucks are needed for work uses."

"The following states allow back riders older than age 18; Florida, Georgia, Maine (older than age 19), Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania"

had she just been sitting in the back i doubt anyone would of cared that much. since she was in a cage it could be some kind of abuse situation which if it were and no one cared enough to call, would be horrible.

I realize that, but back in the day parents would exercise discretion. They wouldn't let you sit in the back of a truck on a major highway, but back roads and lesser roads were fair game. Just seems that we build laws to protect the morons (I think protecting them allows them to breed thus increasing the amount of morons that we have to deal with... that's just my theory), and the rest of the population get's screwed.

i'm with you, i grew up that way too. and it was different then. the big difference is the sheer # of people now. chances are greater now that you will cross paths with a retarded driver who would not be driving responsibly at all if he/she were not told to via driving laws.

its actually safer in the cage than riding on the outside. i see its tied to the truck. it looks like some kind of horror movie first person

i really didn't mean it that way. i was backing up sperbonzo's post that it's roadway chaos in the rest of the world and that's supported by traffic deaths.

I'm in a little town outside Lexington Ky right now. When I go on my afternoon walk I'll be surprised if I DON'T see someone in the back of a pickup truck. What's the big deal? The fact she was in a tied down cage? Or the fact she was in the truck bed?

I guess the politically correct thing would be for her to be in a 3 point harness in the back seat of a Prius while her parents listened to NPR ……

OK so I won't say it wasn't poor judgement to allow it, but I will for certain say that calling in child protective services is utter nonsense.

Police: You know you shouldn't do that, right?

Parent: Yes officer. We won't let it happen again.

Police: Alright we don't need to take this any further.

Parent: Thank you, officer.

And that's how it should be handled.

It would not surprise me in the least though if they took the child away forever the way we're all insane for "zero tolerance" in this weird place. Oops, I mean we're number one! Woot!

Good point and with that in mind I think you are correct. But like PR_TOM stated above this should have been taken care of by the officer responding then forgotten about.
