Content Producers: cover up a model's tattoos?

I'm getting ready to shoot some more content and a lot of the models have annoying, small, badly designed tattoos. Think Tijuana streetwalker. Anyone bother to cover up the tattoos, like with Dermablend leg and body cover? I'm thinking of trying that this time, because tattoos are a turnoff for a lot of guys, including me. Shooting video, so postproduction (photoshop) isn't an option.

In my experience it's pretty much impossible to cover a tattoo for video work without hiring a very good MUA. And even then the results aren't always professional-looking.

While I can appreciate nicely done ink on a girl, as a shooter, I'm not a big fan of tats on models (I like to start with a bare canvas)... These days, I tend to shoot girls with their tats uncovered, since as you noted it is a pain in the ass to do anything about tats for video, and there is a market for girls with tats. I sometimes take out tats in still photos for promo galleries, and leave them in the video - it's funny when a model complains that I removed their tats in the stills, while also admitting that the photos actually look better without the tats. BTW, I've never had a Member complain that the photos and videos did not match due to tat removals in the stills. ![]() I wonder how many hours it takes to cover up Angelina Jolie: ![]() ADG |

Yeah it doesn't work that great. Dermablend is fine for small tattoos on a wrist or ankle. Its blending isn't very good, decent enough for video maybe, if you use a good color corrector and blending technique. And yes, as mentioned, it does get on clothes and furniture

I recommend airbrush makeup and medical grade makeup (waterproof), its extreme heavy coverage for covering up things like burns, tattoos, etc Its about the only method you could use with it looking good unless youre just talking about a minor one or two that aren't too stubborn

A little while back I was in a grocery store and saw a girl with a tat on her chest like the girl above's words and human centipede tat. This one was of two zombie heads facing each other. They had these long tongues that were intertwined with each other in some kind of insane zombie demon kiss. Not only was it disturbing to see, it was very poorly done. I noticed several people looking at her with looks of shock.

It is so big that any shirt with any lower neckline will show it off. She was young, likely early 20's I wonder how she will feel in 20 years. |

It would take a lot to convince me that any type of make up can convincingly cover tattoos. It's especially difficult for me because I shoot very high definition and with a lot of detailed close up shots where every pore of the skin is seen. Make up can only cause the skin to look chalky and obscure the details of skin texture. Clothing is really the only option to cover tattoos unless the tattoo is in a critical area that we need to show off and in that case the model is useless to us.

I would imagine taking something off the shelf it would look a little off as far as matching the rest of their skin tone. Shooting in HD would only magnify that. Personally, I think I would be more put off by seeing a girl with a big discolored splotch of skin than a shitty tat. |

It's a tough one, because the next scenes I'll be shooting are in a "historical" context - and I like to keep it as accurate as possible - no digital watches and no tats. I agree that seeing a discolored splotch would be distracting - probably as much as the tattoo itself. You know what they say in Fetish niche- the devil in the details - and tats make it more difficult to maintain the illusion I'm going for. Obvious answer would be only use models without tattoos - I might go that route but it makes the talent pool a lot smaller.

and even dermablend you need to get the exact tone of the models skin. every model have different tones, you'd end up having to buy a boat load of dermablend. some of the high rollers use a spray on skin, but honestly to me that is just too fake. i love the look of a models skin, prefer to keep it very natural looking.

I used to work as a make up artist in movies and yes you can cover up tattoos with makeup but they do full body makeup, not just the one area and it is with airbrush and special waterproof makeup and it takes hours.

I don't think that Dermablend works that well and with a bit of rubbing and sweating it comes off. Better to look for models with no tats or just live with it. |
