Die with dignity

What the fuck is that supposed to mean anyway? "Die with dignity".... most people shit themselves at the moment of death... the rest are pissing themselves.... all kinds of bodily goo leaks out.... and you're generally not in a good way that you'd want anyone seeing you in..... so how the fuck are you supposed to "die with dignity"?

I submit that there is no such thing.

dieing with a cocaine mustache on the bottom of a ladyboy tag-team is what people must be referring to.

Fart Proudly and go out with a big ripper to make sure everyone in earshot knows you got the last laugh. I'd say that's beyond dignity;)

Dying for something greater than one's self has always been historically deemed as dignified. The truth is that most of humanity is selfish/self-absorbed/possessing an almost animal-like slavery to self clothed with thin disguises of civility and self-serving morality. That's why TWO common denominators of religion are the concepts of compassion and loving/kindness and salvation is often positioned as the liberation from the slavery of self.

From a more secular perspective, philanthropists and others who displayed some level of altruism are admired and ascribed varying degrees of dignity.

Where there's heat, there is probably fire...

When it comes to assisted suicide I think it means that you choose to end your life before things get really ugly. Sure, the moment of death is not dignified, but I think they refer to people who have ugly debilitating diseases where you will slowly wither and die, have to have people wipe your ass and shower you and you end up not knowing who anyone is as being a loss of dignity.

After 15 years of working in a hospital I long ago came to realize that most people don't. Has nothing to do with pissing and shitting, it has everything to do with how you take it in your final days/hours. Believe me when I say a lot of people cry and whine and whale and fuss until their last breath, like after living for 75 or 80+ years death is still what, unexpected?

These people seem to live their whole lives avoiding the fact that death is one thing and one thing only -- INEVITABLE.

Accepting it with grace is what I think the term die with dignity really means. Because no amount of crying and moaning is going to stop it from happening.

checking out on your terms as opposed to waiting for the disease to wreck havoc is what comes to mind in regard to "dieing with dignity". It's legal in some places in Europe, there are hospitals where the terminally ill person can go and is given medication to end their life

Naturally there are people who think death happens to everyone but them, and live in denial, guess it depends on one's values.

Elizabeth Kubler-Ross came up with the 5 stages of grief after interviewing thousands of terminally ill patients - denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Some just never get to the acceptance stage and really how many out there can claim they're ready for the lights to go out, especially if they have a short notice so to speak

You can be eaten by a shark.

That's pretty dignified, and you get to be part of the food chain to boot!

It's a win-win!

I wouldn't want to go out being hit by a bus or something. I'm honestly not afraid of death but you still would get that last split second of 'Oh, shit!!' It would be cool to go out at least with my boots on and maybe have my death mean something........say trading my life for someone I love getting to keep on living. Barring that the next best thing would be dying peacefully in my sleep or hitting an overpass support at 140 miles an hour after finding out I had terminal cancer........might as well enjoy your last few seconds.

If your life has no meaning I would submit you find some meaning. To me life is about that next experience, learning, acquiring knowledge, that next cold bottle of root beer, the next hug from my daughter.........life is a series of seemingly random moments strung together. Some of them have no meaning.....but some of them should mean something even if it only involves having a good moment in a cold, uncaring world.

whoa that is harsh. and since you haven't been there yet you have no way of knowing how you will react. i know from your posts that you are one of the older people here, are you more prepared to die now than when you were 30?

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Modern medicine has made death worse for those with terminal/chronic illnesses, it prolongs the dying process. 50 years ago and longer most people didn't die hooked up to machines in the sterile surroundings of a hospital. They died at home. Most people these days can die at home if they have a good family or friends to help them. But most people don't want to plan ahead and some don't want to burden others.

There are lots of people who go fast, they are lucky. Some even go in their sleep. My doctor did, I had an appointment with him when I was 15, my mom was about to drive me when his nurse called to cancel, said he wouldn't be in, he had died in his sleep. And he was only in his late 40's.

Die with dignity?
My stepfather died in his home, of cancer. He had Hospice taking care of him, he lived long enough to take care of a few matters and then die in his sleep. With Dignity. He was surrounded by friends and family, not doctors. My mother and her friend dressed him in nice clothes, shaved his face and waited for the morgue people to show up. He was buried with full Military honors in a stainless Steel coffin as he was in the Marines

Did you tackle that trouble that came your way
With a resolute heart and cheerful?
Or hide your face from the light of day
With a craven soul and fearful?

Oh, a trouble’s a ton, or a trouble’s an ounce,
Or a trouble is what you make it.
And it isn’t the fact that you’re hurt that counts,
But only how did you take it?

You are beaten to earth? Well, well, what’s that?
Come up with a smiling face.
It’s nothing against you to fall down flat,
But to lie there – that’s disgrace.

The harder you’re thrown, the higher you bounce;
Be proud of that blackened eye!
It isn’t the fact that you’re beat that counts;
It’s how did you fight and why?

And though you be done to the death, what then?
If you battled the best you could;
If you played your part in the world of men,
Why the Critic will call it good.

Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce,
And whether he’s slow or spry,
It isn’t that fact that you’re dead that counts,
But only how did you die?

I think if you can avoid having anyone else needing to wipe your arse before you die, then your death qualifies as "dignified"

Maybe they are thin. If they don't eat anything, they are not full of shit.

3 Weeks ago, I went to Calgary to see my father in law, who was in a hospice and dying of cancer. This 200 pound man had withered away to 91 lbs of skin and bones. His cheeks and eyes sunken in, his skin a funny brown color and covered with black patches all over his body. He laid there in pain, high on morphine, unable to walk or even shave due to extreme weakness. Any pride he had was long gone. Any contribution to anything, ever, or any joy left of his life was long gone, and he knew it.

Last monday he finally died.

"Dying with Dignity" is an issue brushed under the carpet by most people and it shouldn't be. No one should have to suffer the way he did. His disease was terminal. We treat our dying pets better than we treat our dying relatives. Dr. Kevorkian was put in jail for this reason. A real shame.

If you had the experience that I have you'd see it far clearer.

Incorrect. Not that I've been there (as in died), but that I have no way of knowing how I'll react. I accepted the inevitablity of my death long ago friend. Have you? I came to realize many years ago that most people haven't. In fact it seems to be treated by many as a topic to be avoided, not thought about or acknowledged in any way.

And because of that it is my considered opinion that THAT is the main reason why a lot of people die with zero dignity. You, in all your years of experience (whatever they may be) might disagree with that, although from where I sit you'd be wrong. But being wrong is your right.

I actually made peace with my death many years before that.

I would recommend that everyone do the same. Fearing death is a waste of the time we all have left in this life. I can think of far better things I'd rather do that worry about "it".

Here's an example of the inevitability of death hitting you square in the face....

Your country has been invaded and is being conquered. (I don't care what country you live in, if you think it can't happen then you haven't studied history)
You have been labeled a security risk by the conquering army and have been imprisoned.
The next morning you and a few dozen of your neighbors and friends are taken out to a wall and lined up, and a line of soldiers raise their rifles. You know you're about to die.

Question: Do you cry like a little girl? Or do you hold your head high and go out with.... what's that word I'm trying to think of here?.... um..... oh yeah, DIGNITY?

Think about it.

And while you're at it think about the millions of people in history who faced that exact situation. Some were asked to renounce their faith, some were simply shot with no other options presented to them.

Again, dignity in death has nothing to do with pissing or shitting.

Fact is there are people who have jobs to clean that shit up. Who are we to begrudge them a paycheque? :D

it's biological to have some type of emotion when dealing with death, thats what life is, to be alive and to survive, so I don't see anything wrong with having some type of emotions when nearing the end, we are humans not robots... imo people who are ok with dieing don't really have much to live for

I submit that there is no such thing.
Dude you are wrong, a man can die with dignity. A man can die in honor or shame and it all depends on a man. And you my friend are just one sad and totally lost at sea dude. I will give you a free advice, I recommend you to take your pieces together and stop whining at web boards.
