When you walk out of a restaurant..

When you walk out of a restaurant, and you just paid your bill +gave a generous 20% tip, and then someone runs after you and accuses you of not paying.. You tell him you did but he doesn't believe you.. only to be proven wrong by the cashier and your waiter who are very apologising (the guy was not, cause he got his ego bruised). Would you:

a) keep being friendly, understanding these things happen
b) be neutral and slightly upset, but go back to the place
c) think this inexcusible and never return there

A) but I wouldn't be going back. I give those places one shot. A cheap excuse of idiotic behavior does not win me over. There are hundreds of other to restaurants eat at.

A while back we went to the local pizza place with 12 people. We left a rather large tip - cash. A few days later I noticed a tip was added to our bill. I wasn't too happy. There was 12 of us, I paid the tab, and then everyone pitched in either a $10 bill or a $20 bill. The tip must have been well over $100...

D) Declare loudly in the shit stains face that he just cost every one of his co-workers and his establishment all of your future business and he hopes that they take appropriate action to rectify any of his future idiotic rants

While it's not always the time and place, sometimes it *is* the time and place.

Yeah we are real careful about that as well. Around here its getting more and more normal to add the tip in. They usually add 12% where I would have tipped 18 to 20 depending on the waiter.

Loss for them.

d) Ask to see the manager. Be nice but firm. State you understand these things happen but you expect to have your full bill refunded immediately but the wait staff can keep the tip. If this is not done, you are good customers but you will never come back again and you are only asking once. Then either way, thank him, shake hands and leave.

If you have money, why not? Some people are decent people and the wait staff in many countries tend to almost starve with what they are paid. Karma and who knows one day you might need them in another place and they could remember your generosity. It's a small and strange world.

depends on the food but I don't think I'd care too much

If its good food might just get it take out style, then you skip the whole service part and its ready faster

people put far too much stock in service... if it takes too long it sucks, if the server is an idiot it kinda sucks, if the server is forgetful that is a bit of a pain... but if the food is good? The price is right? I could give a shit about the rest of it. I don't go out for the experience as much as the food. If they go well out of there way to be nice and everything is perfect except the food is shit? No way i'm going back though. Some of my favourite places have a nut bar running them, but good food rules all for me.

I can understand this being an issue if the place is really expensive and a lot of the price is reflected upon that though, but in general no I don't care about that stuff.

So I can buy good karma now? lol that's awesome!

Personally I always tip decent but I will no over do it, nothing to do with being decent. But really this is more an american thing so it's ok, you can stop trying to explain ;)

Based on the service I get 90% of the time, I can understand why waitstaff starves.

Aren't you in Amsterdam or somewhere thereabouts? Yes I think the wait staff tend to be far better paid there. Here in the US a $100 tip probably just puts them about where they ought to be getting paid for the day. On a bad day people can work eight hours and earn $30 at certain times of the year and at certain places.

its an american thing because our min wage for servers is $2.13

but $100 tip for 12 people at a pizza place is nuts unless its diamond coated pizza or ya'll alcoholics ($42 ea at 20%)

90% of the time people who make these types of comments are assholes who have never had a real job. The other 10% are justified. Or else they mainly eat at place like Mcdonalds. I've never been a waiter but I know it's hard work and not as easy as many think it is.

I'll just outright say that I'm an asshole since you only went 90% of the way.

All or nothing.

Well it depends. Could be. If you also self identify as an American conservative the odds of this go way up.

That what I mean yes.

Btw besides the regular tip this year I noticed the Mondrian hotel on sunset added a 10% service charge. Like wtf?!?! Isn't that like a double tip?

I tip only if the food was good or the service was good, if it was shit i'm straight up counting pennies out of spite. I fucking hate when some shithead waiter comes to our table of 6 without a pen/pad, tries to remember the whole order and then fucks up half of it, and then expects a big tip.

Its a weird culture of self entitlement... because tipping is so common. The lowest common denominator always feels the most entitled to your money in the USA. BTW... I've never had a server say "sorry for fucking everything up, here, take your tip back"

Service is pretty important for me. Probably 70% food and 30% service. Don't care too much about price if those two areas are covered.

i would do whichever one results in my food not getting spit in. but it would depend on who the someone was that you mentioned wrongly chased after you... the busboy, no biggie. the manager, i would play it cool and he/she should do the right thing and offer to comp my next meal there. if i didn't get that without asking, i would take my hard earned ducats and find another dining establishment to frequent.

It's just an honest mistake. If you like the food and the service go back. Don't give up a place you like to eat in just because a waiter goofed. Don't forget they only get something like $2.00 an hour so the tips are what they live on.

Are you talking about an employee? If so, that is inexcusable. I would tell him to go get the manager. If the manager resolves the conflict to your satisfaction then I would return, if not then I would take it up the chain of command (ie corporate if it's a chain, the owner if it's an independent business) until you get a satisfactory result.

I think personally I'm gonna say A, simply because you just don't know how bad of a day that person is having or what is going on in their personal life, it was a genuine mistake and he was trying to avoid a situation where if it was true, he'd probably have to cover the bill himself. Ok, yes he should be apologetic but he was most likely embarrassed, we've all been there, I know I have, make an ass of myself and instead of taking it graciously, I make it a bit worse.

I tip 20% or more always. Rarely get bad service, if its too slow I get up and leave and go elsewhere.

I am guessing either you look like a tramp or this wasn't a particularly high class establishment.

The guy shouldn't have been rude but you have to see it from their point of view also. They probbaly get stiffed often, and maybe it's the staff who get penalised when this happens.

Whether to go back depends upon whether you like the food. No other factor. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face.

If service is just normal I go 20%, if good or better I'll usually start at 25% and go up from there. As far as your question if it's a good place I'd go back but would probably say something like "fire this shithead" or "put this assclown on dishes"

yeah it's true, a lot of resto's have a policy of sticking it to the server if diners stiff them on the bill or pull "a chew and screw"

My brother had a strange thing like this happen once. His kid's school held a fundraising auction and he won a gift certificate to this resort/hotel at the beach. So he and his wife went. The certificate covered 2 nights stay and had card with $100 on it that they could use in the restaurant, or for massages etc. They went to dinner one night and the bill came to about $60. He gave the waiter the gift card and intended to give him a tip in cash. When the receipt came back he expected to get the card back with about $40 left on it. Instead, the waiter (who, BTW was terrible) had just went ahead and given himself a $40 tip.

My brother was so pissed he called the manager over and asked if this was normal. The manager saw what happened and asked the waiter who smugly said, "It was a gift card, its not like it is money out of their pocket."

The guy got fired on the spot. I would imagine that wasn't the first time he had done that.

Of course A)
It's called the hospitality industry for a reason - falsely accusing and potentially embarrassing paying customers should never happen. Again, it should be kicked up the chain of command so that corrective action can be taken to help ensure that it does not happen again.

Wait, did someone just say wait staff get paid $2 an hour? Are you fucking serious? That's bullshit. Why the hell would anyone do the job if they get $2 and possibly tips? Your income entirely fluctuates based on the owners ability to advertise and market and the kitchen staffs ability to cook? That's absurd.

I'm not surprised. At 5-star American restaurants, it's fairly common to see bills with separate tips for the captain and the wait staff.

This is a tough one. My response would probably be contingent on how much wine I had for dinner.

I actually think you should take the hit and move on if that happens to you as a waiter, just make it up with the rest of the tables.

I can clearly see the peeps in this thread that have NEVER worked in the restaurant industry, that's fucking hilarious!

I do agree with you on some level, It depends on the quality of the restaurant, try to do that as a waiter at Morton's or Sullivan's and your ass will get Fired on the spot!

I see if from a completely different point of view. I'm a fairly decent cook and my wife is an AMAZING cook. (For example, If I feel like a lobster thermador and beef wellington, my wife can whip up fantastic renditions of both on pretty short notice.... and the list of dishes is pretty endless.)

I can get food as good, or often better, at home then I can at a restaurant. The reason why we go to them once in a while is for the service and overall experience.

I'm an amazing cook myself, food is an obsession with me. But I'd be kidding myself if I said that I can do something better than a well seasoned chef can. Yes I go out to dinner sometimes for convenience and eat at places where i know i can do better at home but again, if the price is reasonable and the food is great i'm coming back. If the service is outstanding and the food is shit I never will. If its a more expensive place i would expect more of course, as would any of us.
