First off why should a cop care. Why should a cop care if I want to run in to save my son, dog or porn collection?

If the firemen are already there and I'm impeding them, maybe putting them in danger, that's a different story.

exactly. no reason this had to happen, other than a cop trying to prove his point of being a dick.

If a firefighter tried to stop him, it might be a little different but wtf does a cop know about fires?

in the story, the firemen state it was 'too hot to enter'

the argument i am currently having is, what might be too hot for the firefighter working for a paycheque, might not be too hot for the father about to lose a son

Think about this...

If the police hadn't stopped him and he went inside and was injured or killed then his family would have almost certainly sued the shit out of the PD.

For the cops it was a no-win situation, you can bet they are still going to get sued.

I had a big fire in my basement once & I was trying to put it out with a garden hose that was stuck under my tire. The cop arrived, I came out to show him where the fire was and he just handed me the fire extinguisher. I ended up in the hospital from breathing in the burnt PVC. To protect & serve ...

While I have always said that it is not the government's job to protect me from myself, I can see that this is a no win situation for the cop.

The only good outcome would have been if the guy had gotten his kid and escaped with little or no injuries. Had he died in the fire trying to save his son you know the family likely would sue the cop for not stopping him. Now they likely will sue the cop for stopping him.

Maybe he could get to his kid and at least hug him before they both die together, some parents would prefer it that way

if that were to make sense, can you provide a link when a police officer tazes a drug addict 'attempting to commit suicide'?

or does this whole 'committing suicide is only wrong when i have perceived liability'

who in their right mind would think to themselves "I'll taser this guy, knowing his son will die, knowing how distraught this guy will be until he himself dies, because that's better than letting him do what any father would do, because I might get sued"?

who the fuck could live with that on their conscience? Have we become so mortified at the idea of being sued, that thinking in those terms is not only deemed ok, but people can defend that thought process? Fucking sad what humankind has become. Money > life, sadly all too often

why did you tase this guy who wanted to try and save his son?

uhm, I was covering my ass in case I got sued

oh, that's cool then, because getting sued (possibly, and then possibly having to payout) is a much worse scenario than how it played out.

fucking staggering.

I want to know how mother and father ran outside to call the fire department. I would not leave a burning building without both my boys in my arms. Sorry about his loss, tragic. I have to ask myself how they ran outside then later decide to go back in for their kid.

yup.

But a tough situation all the way around.

Think about this: The cop taxed this guy 3 time sot stop this man. Once would have stopped anyone else, but the love for a child is a powerful thing.

If it were me, I would rather die trying to same my son, than live thinking, i should have gone in through the back door instead of the front door.

My son dies, I'm dead anyways.

On the flip side, smoke generally kills people way before the fire does and his son was most likely dead before the cop even got there.

Tough situation either way. Sad story, going to go hug and kiss my 3 yearly son now.

Just Dave

If the man decided to risk his own life in order to save his boy, that was his sacrifice to make, and there is no being alive that should have ever EVER meddled in THAT. Wow.

Thats the exact thing. IF they let the gun run in and he does not come back out right away now a Fireman has to go in to try and save him or risk getting sued. Chance of the firman not going home now as gone from 20 to 30 % to well over 80% because someone could not let them do their job. They are the ones dressed in those uniforms for a reason.

I don't think the cop had a legal reason to tazer the guy. The police do not have the legal right to keep people from their property when their is a fire.

I speak from experience. There was a fire in the area near my parents house. My mother was there gathering things to throw in the back of a truck that could not be replaced. My step father came home from work and was stopped by a road block going to the house. My step dad drove around them (4X4 truck ) and the police gave chase. They stopped at the gate when they saw my mom holding several fire arms. The police ended up giving my step father a ticket and it was thrown out of court because they didn't have the right to stop him.
Fucking cops are always over stepping their authority, just like a lot of elected officials. It's up to the citizens to stand up to them.

I hope they make an example of this cop
