sucks for him. you've got to wonder how many others there are like him out there. with there being a limit of bitcoins in the world, it seems this kind of thing would increase the price.

Isn't there a better way to store them, outside of being one HD failure away from losing them?

you can store them anywhere, make backups, upload backups to the cloud, etc... so "hd failure" is not really an issue for most people who are not idiots like the guy described in the news article...

doesn't have them being anywhere online leave them open to being stolen? i thought the most secure way was to put them on a usb or something.

a bitcoin is an address with the bitcoin chain. i write the addresses down on a pieces of paper and *store* them that way, off line.

you encrypt them, so if someone ends up getting access to them they wouldn't be able to do anything without your decryption key... but yea, you are right, uploading them online just anywhere poses additional risks...

Having a difficult time imagining how you just 'forget about 7,500 bitcoins' - and toss the old drive out.

If I were the dump owner - I'd be tempted to charge people big bucks to have a go at finding the drive themselves. Split the £4million - 50/50 with the finder.
