Has anyone gotten any computer viruses in the last 3 years that costed you serious $$$ to fix?

Has anyone gotten any computer viruses in the last 3 years?

if so do you know what they were and what they were named?

Do you know how you got them?

Do you use virus protection? Which one? Does it work well? Which virus protection do you recommend?

Just curious if any of you experienced anything like that,

My buddy called me up yesterday and had a virus on his PC had totally fucked him up.

What ever it is that he got, is gonna cost money to fix, if he wants to save his Docs, info, and content.

Is there still PC viruses out there that Virus protection can't defend against? And if you have a Virus horror story please share.

Just Dave

Interesting.

Do you use a good virus protection? and is there one you recommend?

Everyone not in porn thinks you get viruses from all porn sites, including pay porn sites. I laugh when my non-porn friends tell me that.

From what I always hear from my non-porn friends is that the porn people make all of the viruses.

Seems that we as an industry get blamed for everything.

I wouldn't ever pay someone for that shit anyhow. I'd just reformat and reinstall. Anything of importance is backed up away from the computer. But my main machines run OSX. Haven't had any real worries there.

I get malware all the time but since download ad-ware for free i no longer have much issues. It does seem that each 6-12 months I a forced to reformat my entire computer - i use windows 7 and 8. Never any issues on my macs.

I work at home a lot and use AVG plus the premium version of malwarebytes. Occasionally I'll pick up malware that just came out and malwarebytes hadn't added to the library yet. But I rarely pick it up from work related stuff funny enough.

Last serious virus was picked up at work 3 years ago when I was looking up contest related stuff for miss freeones. That was at an online beauty pagent site.

This.

Alot of script kiddies out there buying RATS (Remote Access Tools). The "hackers" use crypters to make them FUD (Fully Undetectable). I use Microsoft Defender, but I don't trust it to pick up everything if the payload has been crypted a few times to hide the payload signature. My parents computer kept getting redirects, ended up reinstalling Windows 8. Seems ok now. Hope there wasn't a key logger or RAT on it.

If you got the money, but an extra computer for all your financial stuff and commerce. I am poor, but I should get another computer anyways. Back up stuff you want to keep.

I dont ever recall not being able to fix someone's computer using free software and some Google searches. Malwarebytes is your friend. I cant remember the last time i had a virus myself. I think it was back before win98 had a built in firewall.

Ive always used Norton Antivirus (Symantec).

However, im considering ditching it in the near future - its clearly now managed by the NSA who are probably using it as a method to distribute their own malware and update your computer conveniently on a "when required" basis.

Bitdefender Total Security 2015 in my opinion and quite a few reviewers the best one. They gave me a bunch of copies to give away free last year. Could probably find a coupon for ya if ya wanted it. If ya did pay full price the trick is never renew early and when ya got about 2 months left they will send ya a renewal email for like $34.95 so 3 computers for $34.95 ain't bad.

This sounds like one of the CryptoLocker variants. The most common method of delivery is via a phishing attack. Which means that if this is the case here, your friend must have opened an infected attachment sent to his email.
