They don't simple think that - believe me. They believed that cold war was stopped in 1991. They didn't thought that NATO will continue expanding up to Russian borders. They didn't think that NATO has continued to treat Russia as an enemy. Do you know what evil Putin has puritanically suggested good Bush Jr. to accept Russia into NATO? Yes, that's a fact. Bush has swallowed hie tongue during that press-conference. Now they just realized they were fucked by NATO. Fucked during all those years. So the Cold War has never ended for the NATO countries. Now Russia just got it.

I'm not arguing with him (I know he won't understand me because he has no high military education nor civilian one either). I've just tried to tell what regular Russians feel about it. Especially the military officers. That's not some kind of secret or whatever.

I can't read your shit, russki, but apparently your crap swam up with a quote, can't resist to quote myself:
"They didn't thought that NATO will continue expanding up to Russian borders." - brace yourself. You need to fix yourself. You get so angry you start writing in Russian using English words.

Again,

I guess that Russia has to show that it has few flyable planes, as there wasn't so much certainty about it, not so long time ago.

Don't take this too literally.

Russia never stopped the Cold War and Cold War thinking. Yeltisin came very very close to losing the re-election to the leader of the Communist Party. After that, they simply neutralized Zhirinovsky by finding a way to bar him from the election (false claims on statements of assets and properties), which every single other bureaucrat lied about as well.

Russia only briefly pretended to from 1994 to the early 2000s that the Cold war was over - when the nation was fully bankrupt and begging the international community (Namely, the West) for money in spite of not even having so much as a basic economic plan. Incidentally, my house cleaner for a while was also the maid of Gaidar, who was one of the principle authors of their economic plan they hastily drafted to satisfy the world bank to secure loans to support the government. She used to tell me how wonderful Stalin was. I miss those very fascinating conversations.

Anyway, smash cut to souring oil prices, Russia repaying foreign loans, having a budget surplus and vetoing ANYTHING put before the UN Security Council and Russia is fully acting again like the Soviet Union.

Someone supporting Russia can say anything they want... there is a simple question... why are NATO countries a threat to Russia? Is Russia planning a nuclear war? There is no real threat to Russia, there is just a bunch of government bureaucrats bemoaning the loss of empire and pining for days when they falsely believed the world ever respected them at all. Russia and Russians have a very twisted view of how the world see's them. It is a nation of generations of people being told how perfect their society is,... that they have no crime, being told how great their socialist and eventually communist future will be, how the peasants and workers will run the world.. every Russian thinks the world knows who Pushkin is, who every famous artist is, who every famous dancer is, when they really have no idea at all and don't care. It's a very odd but very interesting culture of delusion and denial.

Just 20 years ago, they were still calling Moscow "the capital of the world".

Also russia appears probably too strong as an entity and there is an overall tendancy to split countries into smaller ones, that probably the threat that is nato for russia...

It's pretty delusional and full of denial from their part too; considering themselves the best in everything.

The author of that article is an idiot, who don't understand what international airspace is. They can't intercept a foreign plane there. They one can only escort it (follow a parallel course and simple watch at it).

I tell you as a Russian. We have never called Moscow a capital of the World. I swear this is the first time when I read such a nonsense (just google for that phrase in Russian: https://www.google.com/search?q=столица+мира" - no mention of Moscow there). The guy who wrote it (TheSquealer), has some serious brain-related problems.

P.S. We have a phrase "Мать городов Русских" (the Mother of all Russian cities), but... it is about Kiev - the capital of the modern Ukraine

I have heard this argument from my Russian friends. It doesn't hold water. Russia could keep a skeleton crew on their European border as with NATO there they have a buffer against the world. NATO would not attack first.

I would think with your exposure to the West, you would agree that Europe would have a hard time uniting to attack Russia unilaterally. Then add in the Nukes and it really is a non issue. Sort of like the posturing that Putin is doing now. No one thinks he is so dumb as to attack NATO. Let him burn jet fuel. He is like a petulant child lately.

...would not attack first a country with a strong army. If your army is weak, NATO will attack you in any time. Examples: Yugoslavia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Syria... Only an idiot don't understand that NATO is the most aggressive military block on the planet (look at the list of recent wars) and it spreads like a plague or cancer:

I would agree with this statement. And the same could be said of Russia.

I wasn't suggesting that Russia disband its army. I am suggesting that under the current situation, any Russian who feels NATO would attack is being delusional.

Could not be. Since its independence (1991) Russia was involved into one military conflict only. I'm talking about so-called 5-day war in Georgia. But Russia was not an aggressor. It was a defendant (and defender for Georgian civilians in Ossetia). Georgia has started a war against Russia first when Russian peacekeepers were attacked and killed by regular Georgian army. So it was just a response. Georgia was not occupied or so. It just lost the most part most of their army (trained by the US advisers) and military enginery (equipped by the US weapons). I think they've just got a good lesson.

On the other hand, in all those recent wars, I mentioned above, NATO has always been an aggressor. Feel the difference.

Usually countries have military bases, so what's the point? Only Russia should have military bases or some alliances?

Which ones (except NATO)? How many bases do they have (examples please)? Where exactly they have 'em (how close to their own borders)? What's the purpose of having military bases in some region (they cost a lot of money to taxpayers, if you forgot that)? How many Russian military bases you can see around the USA for example? Don't be that stupid. Please ;)

Pretty much every country has military bases, except Iceland. Being in Nato doesn't make military bases NATO bases, the bases are the country's in whose soil it is, except if otherwise stated, like some lease or something (like Russia had in Crimea). You have some real issues regarding sovereignty.

Around USA there are military bases in Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Russia (Alaska), and so on. On sea there is not of course so much military bases.

What is the purpose of having military bases? Well, what is the purpose of having military? Why Russia has military? Are we really going into this simple questions in here?

Outside of it's borders? Which ones and where?

Are you sober? I asked you how many military bases Russia has around the USA?

Looks like not (you're not sober for sure). An army inside the country - to protect. An army outside the country - to attack/protect/conquer/control other regions. Once again: don't be that stupid.

A typical day of NATO:

One day of NATO life:
No, not outside of it's borders: the listed bases are pretty much all inside the countries borders whose bases those are. USA might still have some leased base in Germany, etc. but that is pretty much it. Soviet folks had also bases in Germany, but they became somewhat unpopular and had to leave.

Why you talk just about USA? But Around USA Russia has one base (Alaska region).

About Russian foreign bases. Doesn't seem to include Crimea anymore (Russia annexed it).

It's not a military base. It's a regular military unit inside of Russia. Where did you learn the military science? *facepalm*

Your problem is that you count every base in some NATO country as US military base, even though those are not synonyms.

Military base is a military base. Military unit is a military unit. This has nothing to do with military science. These are definitions and you use those wrong. Base is base and unit can be located outside of the base (and usually are during war).

Cool to know what you aware of wikipedia. However. Military unit = воинская часть. Military base = военная база. These are two different things. Here is a quote from your link:

"In most cases, a military base relies on some outside help in order to operate. However, certain complex bases are able to endure by themselves for long periods because they are able to provide food, water and other life support necessities for their inhabitants while under siege."

If any of that bases has got the US soldiers, then yes it is a synonym.

I haven't said that base and unit are synonyms. Military unit is the people and vehicles of the unit, base is a place, like barracks, armoury and so on. You know, like house is a place and the people who live there are the unit.

The countries where the bases are located might disagree with your definition of US military base. I agree if there are mainly US troops, but as countries do cooperation, some foreign personnel doesn't make it foreign military base per se.

No, its' not. A military unit (воинская часть) is also a military department. For example московский военный округ (Moscow military district). It's not a military base. It's a military unit located in Moscow and around it. When we are talking about bases, we are clearly mean the military units located outside the country.

Well, I can't argue with how you think it in Russia.

Military unit is of course the organization too, but the clear distinction between the base and the unit is that base is a place, unit is not. And military base is not a synonym for foreign military base. At least in English and in my own language. Call it whatever you like in Russia.

Doesn't mean what I think in Russian (personally I just don't care whet you think in Finnish). I clearly told you that when we are talking about military bases, we are talking about the ones, located outside the country.

So how many such bases Russia has outside of the USA? Now how the USA (NATO) has around Russia? Who wants a war?

We talk? You mean you talk (or are there multiple "you")? You are the only one in here who thinks military base is a synonym for foreign military base.

Russia hasn't that much military bases around US because of geographical reasons. You know, like I said, it is quite hard to establish military base on sea. And as you did figure out my nationality (well, I did give coordinates), you might get that I am not that much into this US vs Russia shit anyways. I am looking this more from my perspective, and my country hasn't got that much wars with US, but with Russia hundred or so wars (including time before independence). So..

FYI: Russia has zero military bases around the USA. There was the only base near the USA on Cuba which was terminated by Putin, because that stupid KGB fag thought that cold war is over. Did I told you already that he is an idiot and the real problem for my country? He is a thief, a coward and a litter for NATO.

Yes, you did tell that. I am not that big fan either.
