Cuba - Next big land grab
If Russia and Eastern Europe are any indication, prices will sky rocket over the next few years. Anyone know how to buy there? Or have you? |

 | slapass, Cuba is still a communist country. The reason Castro took power was due to American oppression. Don't look for any land grab there soon. This is just two former foes normalizing relations.

 | Understand the history. Before Castro took over most of Cuba was owned by Americans. Cubans were serfs in their own country. Don't look for a fire sale of Cuban property any time soon.

 | I agree with you that there will be a land grab but I think its a number of years away. Raul has been slowly working towards a capitalist government by letting people open their own businesses. But its slow going and they are having to shut a lot of them down for no license etc. Until Cuba has some sort of internal income like that, things wont or should not change fast. As for buying land. Right now, you can not. If you have a friend or family, then it can be done with your money but not with your name. My mother in law lives there part of the year. For now the market is stable but its going to increase some. Not the way most people think. I was looking at a property for her there not long ago. 2 Hectares with a river, well for water, small house fronting a road, for 15K us.

 | I thought that Castro took power because he was communist, he wanted Cuba to be a communist country (elsewhere too) and he wanted to be the dictator of Cuba. |

 | The Communist government in Cuba nationalized American assets after the revolution and that is why, or one reason, there is an embargo now. There won't be much US or foreign private investment in Cuba for that reason. |

 | I know the history. There is a way to check if the title was in the family before the fall. So you need to buy from someone who did not leave. But the chances of it reverting are really zero at this time. |

 | Yeah. Its just outside of Havana as well and not far from some of the nicest beaches. Mom does not want to live there though. Big trick is. If you get someone to buy for you, and they Die, the Government or a family member takes the house. Mom is 66 so...

Subscription Center | ChicagoBusiness.com One article I read yesterday said that Franchises such as McDonald's wouldn't do good there, but other traditional items like Pepsi and Frito Lay products would do great. Keep in mind that Cuba has been starved for the past fifty years - they are still driving fifty year old American made cars.

 | Foreign ownership of land depends on a country's laws, fair courts and governmental stability. You don't see foreigners grabbing up cheap luxury apartments in Moscow for these reasons. |

The average tourist-related, service-job employee in Niagara Falls, Canada makes a minimum wage that is approx. $4/hr. less than the defined "living wage" poverty line for the region. In all seriousness - no. I think Cubans (like Canadians) should make a fair, decent wage in return for a good, honest day's work. We're all being fucked equally by the greed of huge corporations and government - whether it's in Canada, the U.S or Cuba.

exactly right unless you are Cuban you wont be owning any land in Cuba in this lifetime. I get why Americans dont understand this (at the time of the revolution US companies owned around 75% of all property in Cuba) when castro won and the US refused to normalize relations with Cuba Castro nationalized all US corporate owned property. A fact you wont get taught in American history classes usually. There will be great economic opportunities for Americans as well as Cubans as a result of normalizing relations but buying up land there aint gonna happen.

 | I was chattin' with a co-worker the other day about the cost of Cuban vacations potentially going up for Canadians in the near future (he goes to Cuba frequently throughout the year), and he asked me why Obama chose to normalize relations with Cuba after all these years. With a dozen or more blurry conspiracy theories floating around these days - I told'em perhaps the U.S. was simply tired of blaming Cuba for JFK's assasination for a half century. |

As for buying land, forget it : I tried and the only way is either in the name of a cuban friend, get married ... but once that friend/spouse dies, divorce or whatever you are back to square one . As I go about 7 times a year , and would not mind selling the florida condo , I am looking into "" renting "" on a long term basis, like 15-20 years , in Varadero . Will know soon from the lawyer ...
