Sudden Death in the NFL, in OT -- Is Bullshit

Sudden death in the NFL, in OT has to be on of the worst rules in all of sports, it makes absolutely no sense and is completely unfair to the defending team.

First team to score should win.

Yeah, in a game where everyone has an equal playing field -- like hockey or baseball, basketball, etc.

When you have the ball to start, that's an automatic advantage -- there's nothing fair about it.

It should be timed, or sudden death once the other teams gets an opportunity with the ball.

In baseball, it is impossible for the defense to score points. In football, both offense and defense can score points. Big difference.

the rule is correct. a touchdown counts more than a field goal and should be emphasized more in OT.

well done rule.

Both teams had 60 minutes to win but didn't, first to score should win. That's why it's called sudden death.

Reality :

If the other team takes the kick off and drives 85 yards for a touchdown,
you lost.

Isn't that how it is? If the team with the ball scores, the other team gets a chance to tie it up.

I don't follow too much football, but I'm pretty sure I know at least this much. I think.

They got rid of sudden death years ago...at least I thought they did. LOL.

sudden death means prove it.

if you can score a touchdown in a tie score game after 60 minutes then that is the textbook definition of sudden death.

They did not get rid of sudden death completely.

Touchdown or Safety still equals sudden death.

Field goal, the other team gets a chance on offense.

I always hated the old rule where any score would win, but the new way is an adjustment that has a nice balance.

You know exactly what I mean, and if you didn't...well you're a moron. Both teams get a fair opportunity to play -- that was the point.

I know you're too little to admit being wrong, but it's a fact that the team with the ball has the advantage to score in football -- and that is unfair, plan and simple.

Thanks for explaining why it was called sudden death, it's still an advantage for the team that gets the ball starting OT.

This is not something you can argue with lol.

The team with the ball at the start of OT, has an advantage and therefor it's not fair.

The game ended in suddent death OT, with Seattle leading the drive and scoring a touch down to win. Green Bay didn't get a chance after that -- game over.

Green Bay did have a chance to score.

Greenbay could have pinned Seattle near the goal line on kick off. Then Green Bay defense could have forced a safety, thereby ENDING THE GAME.

Or Greenbay could have forced a turnover and scored a touchdown, thereby ENDING THE GAME.

So stop spreading the lie that Greenbay did have a chance to score.

By that suggestion right there....this would have to be YOUR conclusion in ending a baseball game in extra innings...

If a team in baseball scores a run in the top if the inning, the game should be over, by your logic...because, the team on defense should have kept them from scoring and given themselves a chance to win in the bottom of the inning.

Wrong, because in baseball the defense cannot score.

But in football, the defense can indeed score. Ever hear of a "pick six"?

In order to score they have to keep the other team from scoring -- and give themselves an opportunity to get the ball back and score.

It's the same deal dingdong.

And? Fact remains BOTH the offense and defense has a chance to score a TD. The defense does not even have to get off the field to score a TD. The defensive side themselves can score a TD. Thus first team to score a TD wins.

If you can't win it in 60 minutes you shouldn't whine about not getting a chance in OT. I'm a Packer fan and feel this way.

bottom line, GB needs to clean house. Playing that conservative with the NFC championship on the line is out and out just plain stupid... And it's a common theme for them. As soon as they're in the lead, they get conservative and play "not to lose" instead of playing to win.

IMHO, the HC, DC and OC all need to go... You can't keep playing "not to lose" and expect to win. I'd have had much more respect for a loss had they went for one or 2 of those instead of settling for field goals, and played to win.

Yeah, that onside kick fuck up was bad, but they gave up the game at the start of the second half when they started playing conservative if you ask me...

The packers had 60 minutes to win the game, they don't deserve another shot especially if their weak defense gives up a touchdown on the first possession of overtime.

That's pretty much why Elway cleaned house in Denver.

its no advantage if you have top shelf defense. seriously if you have a front 7 that can get to the QB, it negates the advantage.

It's obvious that each team should be allowed to attempt a series of five field goals. Starting from 25 yards out, increasing by 10 yards each time until they get to 65 yard trys.

They want the game to end as fast as possible in OT.
Especially a game on TV.
They don't want the teams to swap touch downs for another hour.
At a certain point they would be just starting a new game rather then deciding who won the last one.

Besides, Green bay knows the rules of OT and the elected to kick a field goal to tie the game instead of trying for a touch down or first down with time on the clock.

They LET the game go to OT by not trying to WIN it right there.

Next time try to win so you don't have to go into OT or learn how to win the coin toss.

are you new to the game or something? it wasn't that long ago it was FARFARFAR worse having it as first score, so one possession and a few small plays and a long kick wins it instead.. this is serious progress in contrast. A touchdown is no walk in the park, if your team is good enough to score a td in overtime you win.. that's about as fair as it gets..
