Marijuana now legal in Washington DC Despite Threats From Republicans

Washington (CNN) Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser defied congressional Republicans and implemented D.C.'s new local law allowing its residents to smoke marijuana.

In implementing the new pot laws that went into effect Thursday, Bowser rebuffed two influential House Republicans who'd warned her that she'd be breaking federal law -- and risking retribution.

"We would encourage the Congress to not be so concerned with overturning what 7-in-10 voters said should be the law in the District of Columbia," Bowser said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

Bowser and Washington police implemented a measure approved by D.C. voters in November allowing Washington residents to possess up to two ounces of pot.

DC legalizes pot, ignoring House Republicans - CNN.com

Republicans once again on the wrong side of history.

Comparing pot to the pipeline is bullshit.
Nobody has to move their house out of the way to grow weed.

Weed plants aren't going to cross state lines.

So just as the rules for implementing law were followed in DC to legalize pot so were the rules of the Constitution followed with the President using his veto power.

Why do you hate America?

"The allowance applies only to those over 21. In addition, D.C. residents can grow up to six pot plants in their own yards. Buying and selling pot are still illegal, as is smoking in public places. But people can transfer up to one ounce to another person -- just not for money."

At what point in your life did you decide to make the career choice of being a cheerleader for the oil industry and dedicating your life to sitting on a porn board day and night arguing for them? Did it happen when you were a kid due to a fascination with gasoline?

oil industry is reality. using oil, gas and petroleum based products is reality. I'm a cheerleader for reality. Try and check into it some time. another reality is I i check in to gfy and don't hesitate to post, I'm here to post not to lurk. People like you get confused and think my ability to formulate a thought and put it into a post quickly is = to dedicating a life. I can understand why someone like you gets that mixed up.

and there you go again trying to point your finger at another gfyer for hanging out at gfy, you know, like you do. but again, i can understand why someone like you gets that mixed up.

so getting high on YOUR approved dopes is A-OK and on the "right" side of history but if someone else gets high their way, they are disabled and have a problem.

you fail to realize the only way to generate debate is to choose the other side.

you never went to school did you? Because in school they often require you to take the opposing side of an issue and debate it. In fact, one of the requirements of a well-written compare and contrast paper is to include 3+ salient points of the opposite side of your argument.

You'd know all that if you had made it to high school +

but hey, keep smoking weed and pointing your finger at others (for getting high). and thinking others who simply disagree with you huff gas and are unable to function

You all understand the issue here, right?

Washington DC is not a state, nor is it a city in any state. It is a federal district under the under the exclusive jurisdiction of Congress. While Washington DC acts like any other city - it has an elected mayor for example - but Congress can to review and over turn any laws created by it's government.

The problem is pot is illegal under federal law, and federal law applies here. It's like your state having a law making pot illegal, but your city trying to make it legal.

Sure is interesting from a legal aspect.

the comparison is perfect. on one issue, liberals have no problem letting their guy get in the way of what the people want, on another issue OMFG THE HORROR a couple congressman disagreed with government action.

and just as importantly, the risk of smoking weed is unproven AND the risk of keystone is unproven

As a result, the comparison is valid.

i've mentioned to both you treehuggers that I believe in personal action, not hypocritically chiding others on gofuckyourself about pollution and energy. I sleep good at night knowing how I choose to handle pollution and conservation, all while being grounded in reality, which means I have interest in the o&g business.

Of course...republicans are against legalization.

The anti-regulation party. As long as you're not smoking weed or having an abortion, they'll let you do what you want.

False equivalency.

recreational drug use that expands the mind and calms the nerves vs a pipeline that could have a huge impact on drinking water, and mostly puts money in the pockets of fat cats.

nope. valid comparison. the risks of both are undocumented. it very well may be that smoking weed causes lung cancer, etc.

at the same time, environmental impact studies have been done to show all phases of keystone, not just this last phase, are within acceptable risk statistics.

so in fact, the pipe has been shown and proven to be A-OK, while we still need to study weed A LOT more.

combined with the fact the majority of the people want both. libs get in the way of one and complain when repubs comment against the other.

typical.

Agreed, but the interesting thing is: who will enforce the laws in DC? See, the Congress cannot arrest anyone and the local DC police say they will follow their Mayor's (and voters) decision. So will Congress "send in the troops" or National Guard to arrest people in DC?

High-ly, high-ly doubtful (yes, pun intended).
