Starting with bitcoins - Blockchain.info any good?

Hi,

I plan to use bitcoins for donate button. Heard Blockchain.info is pretty good.

Any reviews / tips?

It's a trusted site in the community. But, if someone knows about bitcoins they only need your wallet address to send a donation.

I mean you don't really need a button or a wallet from any specific place.

This should be a sign to you that it is to be avoided; "the community" consistently backs scams. In the case of bc.i, the scam is in letting javascript in your web browser generate your private keys. There are at least a couple of problems with this:
  • It's unlikely to use an effective source of entropy
  • It's susceptible to a "man in the middle" attack

You should better run your own full node using code written by members of the WoT. If you have any questions, the developers are usually available for comment.

That sounds a bit complicated Daniel.

@betty If you don't want to worry about private keys and such download the bitcoin qt. It takes a long time to update the blockchain before you can use it. But, you can encrypt your wallet and have peace of mind that it won't be hacked.

blockchain info is good to have a handy amount of btc avaiable when you need it but definitley not to keep your funds there... for that use cold wallets generated on offline computers for more security.

+ always backup your private keys.

Absolutly not true, the -qt client is one of the most targeted software nowadays when regarding to btc in malwares... keeping your wallet.dat encrypted but typing your (weak) encryption key is useless...

Basicaly to have a secure thin client you actualy need a hardware, like a new notebook what you use only for transfering/signing transactions with your private keys.

If malware does steal my encrypted wallet.dat file; how long would it take to crack a 20+ character password?

It seems like over kill for a few btc.

It takes exactly the same time as typing your password into that window to unluck your wallet.dat. That malware most like to have a keystroke logger aswell :/

Btw here is my farm back in those days:

My solution is too complicated so you offer malware? The "QT" client offered by the phoundation should not be relied on for any amount of bitcoin. If You aren't willing to take the steps necessary to use bitcoin properly, you should better use more traditional forms of payment that account for your stupidity.

Daniel does the above apply only for Blockchain donate button or for Blockchain in general? I don't plan to use their code, I will publish my address instead as simple string.

She's clearly new to btc and asking how to take donations. Why would she run her own node? The qt is how this shit started and it obviously isn't malware itself. It's perfectly fine in this case. You guys are paranoid.

overly paranoid ubergeek alert. someone works in a comic book store on weekends, and it ain't 420.

btw kudos danielpbarron (I'm honestly surprised you don't have misterl337 as a prefix, and esquire as a suffix right there) on the getting exasperated and throwing out the insults after what, 2 posts?

Hey 420, you dumb fuck, don't you know that if you aren't a world authority on a subject, you shouldn't open your damn keylogged dialogue whilst trying to help a stranger on the internet that obviously needs nsa-level security for the millions of bitcoin that are soon to be rolling in?

It's cool Jel. I probably insulted the guy previously.

I always try to help people online. If people hadn't been helpful when I first got online I wouldn't have learned about adult and gfy. I might be working somewhere I hated and dreading it every day. I like to pay it forward, you know?

I'm too much of an asshole to think clearly like that

What's wrong with a simple string? What is the button supposed to do? Funds are sent to a string, not a fancy button.

"She's clearly new to fire and asking how to play with it. Why would she learn proper fire safety?" That's how your text reads. The QT client was once worth using, back when bitcoin wasn't worth anything. And in a way, I am recommending this same client; I have provided links to get old versions of the code, before such a time that USG agents started tacking on useless cruft.

If he doesn't need "nsa-level" security, then he doesn't need bitcoin. There are much easier payment options available for stupid people like yourself.
