Interesting thing that he expected to find some info about cockpit door. I mean him being a pilot he should know everything about how it works + he had the first hand experience of how it worked. What did he expect to find on teh internets?

how hard would it be to give a captain of an airplane a key to his aircraft? we can talk about psych testing and shit till the end of time, but a security system that locks the captain out of his own cockpit at 30k ft is beyond stupid.

Seems pretty obvious what happened. And very scary. He planned this in advance.

indeed

they're now discussing if they should change it again

then we have the next case of 9/11 and they change it back

and so it goes forth and back

What if it was the captain that did this and not the copilot?

If your actions involve killing yourself there really isn't a fool proof system. The co-pilot could just as easily have stabbed the pilot in the neck with his ink pen, locked the door, then fought with the disabled pilot until the plane crashes.

Because idiots, sick people etc do not justify things as normal people. It is like saying - what person would want to be a killer. You must be sick person to be that, normal people do not think on the same basis.

in retrospect - and what we know now - there would have been enough warning signs to ban him from flying

but nothing can avoid something like this happening again

certainly you would agree that the captain should not be allowed to be locked out of his own cockpit.

Crazy situation for sure.

Frankly I always thought it was a rule that two people had to be in the cockpit at all times. Maybe it's an American thing? Whenever I see the captain leave the cockpit, the stewardess blocks off the alley and takes her seat in the cockpit until the captain returns.

And if the co-pilot knocks the shit out of the stewardess you're right back in the same situation.

Once you're willing to kill yourself in the process almost any nasty deed is possible.

That's the problem.

Putting a toilet in the cockpit would seem the most expedient remedy, but then you run into significant cost considerations.

Solution: all flights are now drones!

New problem: hackers!

Any solution is going to find new problems. But yes, we should try to minimize the possibility of problems whenever we can. This was a very unfortunate, freak situation, that has happened only a few times? As mentioned, if somebody wants to kill you, they will find a way to kill you.

Excellent point. These are people. At some point you have to put your trust into the airline and their background check processes. At some point, they will find out the hard way that they missed something. Like in this unfortunate situation. All they can do is learn from past mistakes.

In the end, if you disagree with their operations and don't trust them? Don't fly. Walk, ride a bike, take a boat.

People are unpredictable creatures in the end. There is no way, nor will there ever be a way around that. You can automate shit, but then you have the people that code the automation to worry about. It's a never ending cycle.

Trust or don't. The decision is up to you. Risk vs. Reward...

seems to me since columbine that people who commit suicide are beginning to seek fame as part of their death.

it is an unreported fact that cameras recorded adam lanza sitting in the newtown high school parking lot, prior to deciding to hit the elementary school instead. the fame.

& this pilot told his ex-GF he was going to be remembered by everyone someday.

its all attention whoring. thanks to the lovely interwebs.

Weird how this plane flies full speed into a mountain and they find the flight recorder, body parts, cell phone remains, etc. - while 911's flight 93 in PA just left a smoking hole in the ground, and the "plane" that hit the pentagon disintegrated.

Well keep in mind this guy was a coward. I don't say that out of pure hatred for this dudes deeds. I say it because of the method he took. He planned it out to have very little confrontation and to effect as many lives as he possibly could with what position he had. I doubt he would be able to stab a stewardess if the moment came. He was alleviating himself from that level of action. otherwise why not go out in a blaze of glory at a mall? A truly devious yet cowardly scumbag!

Go have a toast with Hitler you POS! Not you pink... the bad guy ;)

My thoughts exactly. I'm guessing that this was the first flight that presented him with just such an opportunity after he had already decided on this fucked up course of action days or even weeks before.

like others have said there's really no 100% way to prevent this - same way there's no way to stop a crazy person from driving their car into a crowd of people.

one thought - a third ANONYMOUS pilot on every flight who sits among the passengers, pilots don't know who he is.

obviously changes will be made so that pilots can't be locked out of the cockpit area.

The problem is that any plan which allows for an emergency pilot to get past a locked cockpit door potentially allows an Allahu Akbar type to get past that same door. Especially if it becomes general knowledge that someone with a key to the cockpit can usually be found among the passengers.

It's a catch 22.

Putting a toilet in the cockpit would seem to be the most effective remedy, but that may not be economically feasible.

We don't have stewardess anymore. They call themselves flight attendants and quite a few of them are men.

It's probably true that he planned it but just finding those words in his search doesn't do much for me.

I paste searches into google all the time from whatever I'm reading.
The idea that those searches reveal some secret is a stretch.

Put a piss bottle in the cockpit.

Hell, an empty jug of cranberry juice would do just fine.

This should eliminate most bathroom trips.

As per the wreckage.. I do think it is a little strange how there is a bunch of shit left but nothing left on the 911 hit. Then again, I'm not a scientist. Could be perfectly reasonable.

What I do find weird is that isn't the nsa supposed to be looking over trigger searches?

If some asshole is typing suicice and cockpit door in search.. Something else should have happened maybe.

Every bullied teen who wanted to be a pilot would get life in prison.
