Anyone else dealing with diverticulitis?

Man what a nasty disease! Mine flared up around February 18th was sitting at around 360 lbs. Made it to the point of April 3rd were i could not stand the pain no more checked myself in emergency room had a 8 day stay in hospital with morphine in my iv every 3 hours. Came home for several days pain came right back even worse then before.

Second time i checked myself in ER was there for 11 days with duladia shot in my iv every 2 hours for pain. Ended up having a abscess in the infected colon area were the diverticulitis was.

Been home for 3 days was feeling better till i had to pass a stool from a liquid diet they had me on. Now all hell is breaking out. Pain is so bad i am popping 3 5-325 percocets every 3 hours just to not crawl in a ball and cry here. Only got enough percocets to last 2 more days.

Anyone else ever has this i am open to any suggestions or ideas for remedy's because i am literally at my wits end from the pain here. All ready ran up about 40k in hospital bills so far but what can i do.

On the plus side i have lost 96lbs since Feb 18th and quit smoking but this one hell of a way to do it.

This used to hit my dad pretty hard.

He is now on a low residue diet, google it. It's a low fiber diet. One approach to treat diverticulitis is to "eat more fiber", which he did at first, but this made his diverticulitis worse. So he was switched to a low fiber diet. If you know you've been eating a high fiber diet and you keep having severe flare-ups, then you might want to ask your dr about a low residue diet instead.

He also eats 5 -6 smaller meals and drinks a lot of water with meals and between meals. At the slightest indication he might be getting a flare-up, he switches to a liquid diet for a few days.

He quit smoking and drinking. I bought him a spinner bike and he's been doing that for exercise.

Re: supplements, I buy probiotics and slippery elm capsules for him on Amazon (see below for non-affiliate links).

Slippery Elm (also used to treat IBS):

Amazon.com: Now Foods Slippery Elm 400mg, Capsules, 100-Count: Health & Personal Care

Probiotics:

Amazon.com: PRO-15: #1 Recommended Best Probiotic Supplement: 60 Once Daily Time Release Pearls - 15x More Effective than Capsules with Patented Delivery Technology - Easy to Swallow - Great Probiotics Supplement for Women, Men & Children - Promotes

I hope some of this info will help you. I'll email him to see if there is anything I missed and if so, I'll post again in the thread.

My father had diverticulitis in his bladder about 10 years ago. A minimally invasive surgery has solved the problem.

Damn at the rate you are losing weight - you will be gone in 4 months!

I don't know much about it. My friends husband was recently in the hospital for it and not sure what they're going to do about it now.

My neighbor had it, and they did surgery. He had a wear a colostomy bag for a month or two, and then I guess they reattached his stuff and he's okay now.

For the record, dilaudid is the shit. I hate being sick in the hospital, but when I am, that's what I want!

I was diagnosed with it as well about 10 years ago. It used to get really bad, I would shit blood non stop for days, felt weak and tired. Not to mention the razor blades in gut feeling all the time.

Except for a very mild flare up maybe once a year I don't have issues anymore. Change your diet, it makes all the difference in the world. Don't drink, don't smoke, don't eat shitty foods. Start exercising.

Once you get things under control you can start being a little more relaxed on diet and drink. Time for some life changes now though, Good Luck!

Hey thank you for the info. I am deathly afraid to try a low fiber diet instead of a liquid diet. Then got me on 2 laxatives all ready. Gave up the smoking no interest there and not a drinker so that part is covered.

Definitely gonna look into the probiotics that's for sure. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Had it once about 15 years ago and went right to the doctor as soon as I knew something was wrong. Got flushed out and was on anti-biotics for a bit but it cleared right up. I think you waited way too long. Scared of doctors?

Well the whole surgery thing comes down to a insurance issue. I let my insurance lapse and i cant re enroll till January. When i go to the er my colon is to infected for them to cut the bad area out and reconnect my colon. They would do the other surgery with the colostomy bag but because of insurance issue surgeon is a afraid no one will take it out a few months later do to legality issues.

As for dilaudid man does it work but boy does it mess my head up

Very simple drinking 5 pots of coffee a day with sugar, lack of exercise and eating one gigantic meal for dinner and nothing else. Started working from home in 1999 was 195 lbs.

Knock on wood no diabetes or any other heath problems.

Ok well I have been working online and out of home since 1996 and I have not gained any weight at all.

I will notice that ALL 3 of the things you have stated above and things that YOU can easily change!

Take the coffee black and certainly cut back on caffeine as you are addicted and yes, caffeine is highly addictive. Five pots proves it. You need that amount to get the same effect that someone who doesn't drink that huge amount gets with just a cup or two in the morning and then an afternoon coffee break of 1 or 2 cups.

Next, get up every hour from in front of the computer and stretch...just to start. After that, set an hour a day (the lunch hour) to go for a walk. Have a protien bar and hydrate with plain water.

Dinner is an easy one. Have it earlier first of all. Next have a smaller meal. It is MUCH better to spread your calories over the day with many smaller meals/healthy snacks. It will keep your blood sugar levels constant and you will not have the peaks and valleys.

So you can make a few simple changes that will do wonders!

Good luck!

Your first course of action to preserve or improve your health should always be proper nutrition, supplements and exercise. Smoking and 360lbs? That is a lot of years of intentionally destroying your body, breaking down your immune system and neglecting your health. Now you need to spend years undoing all that damage... It's important to understand that as you look for short term relief.

^^^^^^^ And, if you are using a laptop put it on a tall piece of furniture and STAND in front of it. Sitting all day isn't good for you.

My mother deals with this and has for the most part beat it. Now it's just about watching your intake of certain foods.
