Cpanel/WHM Is So Unprofessional...

And this is the market leader for web hosting control panels?

Don't get me wrong - I like it but I just wish they would clean it up a bit. It's so badly organised, the documentation is poor, the guidance in the system is poor. It's quite buggy. I'm really surprised that there isn't something better out there.

Can anyone recommend a decent alternative?

even though I never had any technical issues with cpanel/WHM but I have to agree that they need to update their GUI

There's gotta be something better than this...... Really, in this connected age where everyone and his dog has a website. Yet we've moved from DOS to WINDOWS to MOBILE APPS.

And yet, were still stuck with this stupid Cpanel that looks like it's been put together by a BBS script and yet its being sold prepackaged with most VPS or Dedicated.

You guys should get off your asses and make something better - there is OFFICIALLY a gap in the market.

Build a competitive system from the ground up because you don't like the look of it? Good luck with that.

I use WHM/cPanel and it's really good stable... They could improve some things, but still it's the best control panel for sure... It might not be the best solution for VPS or entry level servers...

If I'm paying for something, stability is the MINIMUM of what I expect. Now for my whinge:

There are so many annoyances like the domains section. If you add a domain in some sections and remove it, there are still redirects created which don't remove themselves.

If you want all your sites attached to a single Cpanel login, you have to create them as subdomains of the original domain - why? This creates a whole mess of your sites and you have make and check configurations to keep them separate if their on separate IPs.

The language used throughout doesn't help the novice user a great deal to understand what they are doing and there is no manual you can download from anywhere (as far as I know) apart from something from like 5 years ago. The advice on their site is very average and especially in CPHULK which means searching for answers.

For some reason when it updates, I'm often stuck in the WHM trying to login. It wont let me get passed that bit of accepting the upgrade. I originally thought it was an error in my installation but 3 servers later, I realize its just a problem.

Yes its better than everything else but that doesn't make it good. Considering that we live in an online world and most people use this product, I'm amazed someone else hasn't come in with something decent.

if you want to have a good control panel that does most things better and easier than cpanel then you need to have a look at this list

zpanel
vestacp
webuzo
virtualmin (i don't find it that easy but many people like it)

We offer all those as a one click install with guides how to use them when starting out.

Still i do like cpanel as it has a lot of functions that you won't find out of the box with others. But it can also be a pain with its preconfigured stuff.

Ok, so if we are going to talk what is unprofessional there is one answer for that, every kind of GUI control panel is unprofessional.

Get rid of control panels, this is the good basic recipe to start with: nginx+php-fpm+mysql

We offer Direct Admin with Softaculous (when requested) on our servers. Lighter weight, easier to use, much better platform for admin panels.

using a control panel brings everything together and you won't have to use the command line all the time. Most people don't even know what a command line is. So yeah i think that control panel play a vital role in hosting. It is not unprofessional or anything.

Don't try to feel better than every one else. I am sure that are lots of people who could say such things about products they use and others do not fully understand.

majority use control panles, as its easier to create new email addresses, check error logs, bandwidth usage, create db and much more.

instead going to shell and do cd, cat /var/log .....etc etc.

i dont even know how to add email address in shell.

All of the provisions to manage domains/dbs/emails whatever is already built into the OS. I don't understand using a control panel to manage things that can already be managed directly from the OS.

I don't think I am better than anyone. If I don't know what I am doing, I hire a professional. I just had to add an electrical outlet and a new security light at my house. Since I know jack shit about wiring a house, I called an electrician and paid him to do it properly. That way I don't burn my house down.

My point is that if you don't know what you're doing, don't fuck with it. If you need a control panel, you should not be managing a server. I wonder how many of these half-ass, wanna-be admin's servers get compromised because they haven't the slightest idea what they are doing. If your server(s) are your livelihood, why not do your best to make sure things are done right?

Obviously none of this applies to shared hosting users who don't have the option to manage their own servers. This applies to those who need Direct Admin/Plesk/WHM to perform true administrative tasks.

Ask you host to add paper_ lantern theme for WHM/cPanel.

I admit I prefer directAdmin recently.

This just doesn't makes any sense what you are saying. In the beginning everything was done on the command line and we had to write shell scripts to do the tasks we had to do over and over again. So when you are looking at hosting control panel it is just a collection of scripts to speed up the work. I know how to do things on the command line and luckily we have a good team to do all the work for our clients. But why would i do manually with for instance setting up a domain, when i can also do it with one click of a button in a control panel, less change you make a mistake or anything. It is just so much faster. Can you get security problems, yes. but you can also get those when not installing a control panel. You should just have a good host that use a IDS (intrusion detection system)

Control panel are the way to go and as professional as use the command line. Of course something thing are just faster when using the command line. So using a combination of both is perfect.

Whatever makes things easier for you but there's nothing "professional" about using a panel. It's not faster than the command line. In fact, it adds a layer of obfuscation between you and the server. You're stuck with panel dependencies, specific daemons/configurations and all sorts of unnecessary services aka. bloat.

I don't understand anyone thinking panels are a good idea...ever. If you can't manage a server without a control panel, you shouldn't be managing a server. Not being able to manage a server isn't a bad thing but if your business depends on your server(s), you're crazy to not leave the administrative duties to a professional.

That is why people like you will never be in business for long time, you just can't adapt and only point out the bad things.

If you have a internet site doing 5k a month and you can run you own server and for those though stuff you hire an admin, you are smart. For this you are going to need a control panel because you know stuff but you don't know it all.

If you have an internet site doing 5k and you do install a control panel and hire an admin to do everything for you, you are left with 2k and you are an idiot. You can't control shit, you are out of money and you are site is not even that faster or better than any other. And again you lost a bunch of money for nothing.

Keep the money, go with the control panel because they are easy and can be made secure whenever is needed.

If you know your stuff then choose whatever you like to do. For me, i like them both. Whenever i think the command line is better i do that, other wise i use the control panel. Not a big fan of cpanel at times but some time it is real easy, then going over every stupid command over and over again to add a bunch of domains.

But why don't you stay old school and give out old school advice to people who need something else.

You should look at this from different angles and then think twice. I am sure you can get that rusted brain to see it in a way it does help people and you do not need a over priced pro for every little thing and can make a decent living off your sites.

I've been in the business much longer than you have kiddo. But seriously, calm down. It's not my fault I know more than you do.

Not only can you not manage a server, you can't manage a business. If you think a decent admin will cost you 3k/month, you're out of your mind. Look around at some real managed hosts and see what the cost is before you run your mouth.

If you have a site that's bringing in $5k/mo (you don't) and you don't have a professional managing your server, there's something seriously wrong with you.

You can use the paper lantern or x3 theme as per your choice. Paper lantern is mobile responsive and in beta. So, it will not be fully feature packed as of now. And if you do not like paper lantern then switch back to x3. I still love x3 though I am using paper lantern in some of my accounts.

If you just want to skip paid control panels as a whole. VestaCP and Virtualmin are both good for managing your own servers.
