India heatwave kills more than 500 as temperatures near 50 degrees Celsius

Holy fuck.... 500 + dead from a heat wave.

LINK

Quote:
More than 500 people have died in India from a days-long heatwave that has seen temperatures nudging 50 degrees Celsius, officials say.

Officials warned the toll was likely rise, with figures still being collected in some parts of the hard-hit Telangana state in the south of the country, and with no end in sight to the searing conditions.

Large parts of India, including national capital New Delhi, have endured days of sweltering heat, prompting fears of power cuts.

Most of the 539 recorded deaths have been of construction workers, the elderly or the homeless in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, officials said, but some deaths have also occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal.

Andhra Pradesh authorities are urging labourers and others not to work long hours in the heat of the day after 325 people died from the high temperatures there in the last week.

"The majority of the victims are people who have been exposed to the sun directly, usually aged 50 and above and from the working classes," P Tulsi Rani, special commissioner of Andhra Pradesh's disaster management department, said.

Mr Rani said although the deaths started occurring on Monday last week, the number of cases increased towards the end of the week after days of scorching heat.

"We are asking them to take precautions like using an umbrella, using a cap, taking a huge quantity of liquids like water and buttermilk, and wearing cotton clothing," he said.

Another 204 people have died in Telangana, mostly since the middle of last week, officials said.
* fucked up the title, sorry.

For the metrically impaired that's 122 degrees.

With their humidity, that is beyond uncomfortable.

That's uncomfortable if it's dry air, I can barely handle 100 in humid conditions. In humid conditions your sweat/cooling system doesn't work very well.

Did anyone see Vice over the weekend? As if 50c temperatures aren't enough, they also have a terrible clean water shortage with something like 1 toilet per 200 people. What a terrible condition for those poor people to be living in.

Heat caused deaths have been bad in the US also over the years

It wasn't that hot in the Chicago area in 1995 and 500 died -- 350+- over the daily average.

It's not the first time we getting this much heat in India. March, April, May and June are the hottest month for India. Death tools always rise in India because of heath strokes and poor people living in open air. If any of you planning to travel to India, its a advice not to travel to India in the mentioned months. July is ok because from July MONSOON started and much better weather...

Most AC systems would only be able to put that down to about 100 degrees from 122 degrees. Typically they can only cool the air about 20 degrees. Over time they can do more as long as the rate of increase (from outside air coming in somehow) isn't higher than the rate of decrease.

So even with AC that would be extremely dangerous.

Slushies give brainfreeze causing an instant drop of internal temperatures.

I stand by my previous post in this tread RE viral ice bucket challenge raising funds to send shipments of slushies to our aflicted friends in India.

Slushies can save lives

What's pretty amazing is that 90% of the time the Monsoon will hit Kerala within a few days - It's almost to the hour...

It spreads from there - Pretty amazing.....

Lets hope it isn't late!..

"Drought in India has resulted in tens of millions of deaths over the course of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

All such episodes of severe drought correlate with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. El Niño-related droughts have also been implicated in periodic declines in Indian agricultural output."
