tht's some scary shit. several great whites have been spotted here at my surf spot and 1 aggressively nudged another surfer so the life guards closed the beaches for the rest of that day. i haven't been back in the water since and that was a couple weeks ago. tons of stingrays too, that's what's bringing the sharks in closer. a beachgoer got stung by one too, apparently it hurts. so, yeah, no, i'm not sure when i'm getting back in. and that video doesn't help!!

The shark quickly realize it was a tasteless human and let go ;) He's indeed very lucky not to have gotten a nasty bite.

I was body surfing this summer and was about to go in because there were heaps of fish in the water and I hate that because they attract larger predators.

Anyways, a wave comes rolling in maybe 4' and in the top of the wave is 3 or 4 metre silhouette of a shark... this was maybe 5 metres from me, shark showed zero interest in me but scared hell out of me still.

Always do the "stingray shuffle" ... Gulf beaches here are full of them. When you're in the water shuffle your feet instead of stepping. When you step on them is when they nail you with their tail.

jtfc man! that would be my worst nightmare. could you imagine getting noshed by a great white!

speaking of heaps of fish in the water, one of the conflicts around here is between pier fishermen and ocean swimmers. seems the fishermen like to throw chum in the water to attract the fish but it just so happens the swimmers swim right through that on their route.

i know who's ultimately going to lose that fight!

that's good advice, appreciated. it's funny, one of the guys i surfed with last suggested the same thing but he mentioned it to me in the middle of a larger convo amongst a bunch of us about the sharks increasing around here and that's on account of the stingrays who've also moved in closer looking for food...
i was so tripped out about the sharks i didn't really register the tip to shuffle my feet to scare away the stingrays! but yeah their stinger pierces through wetsuits too!

Being munched to bits is definitely my worst nightmare too, fuck that, but the water is just too good to give up isn't it?

With the swimmers, all it will take is for one attack and it will be on, hopefully that doesn't happen though.

We have a similar problem but with fishermen in boats very close to shore, they throw loads of chum out.

Actually it looked to me like the shark was just curious, and swimming with her mouth open, got herself tangled in the foot rope and thrashed around to get away. If it was "attacking him" he would have been bitten.

I hate the fear mongering that pervades when the media talk about sharks.

there's no fear mongering in that video. a great white shark is curious about surfers for one reason- and that's dinner. it's not a dolphin frolicking in the waves

No. It's NOT dinner. Sharks are NOT interested in eating people. We are not in their food chain. If we were there would be a thousand people a day taken in beaches around the world. Your statement is a good example of the effects of the misinformation out there.

no my statement is a good example of being a smart ocean goer and common sense. the part you're not getting is these sharks are not even supposed to be in this region and the reason they are is due to their food chain being disrupted and they're hungry.

I disagree. Sharks have always been found in every area of the oceans, and as someone who dives worldwide and is passionate about oceans and sharks, I can tell you that sharks do not see people as "dinner", and the perception that they do leads to massive over killing of sharks on the planet.

Well, they are apex predators, anything in the water is potential food, plenty of deaths and severely mauled beach goers to support this.

No matter how the media play it, he is a very lucky man to have had such a close encounter and come away completely unscathed.

Watching the video a few times, I don't think the shark was as big as they are tyring to make out with the screen shot. That is the rear fin (caudal fin) and not the dorsal fin.

and that's cool. i'm looking at this video and attack on a surfer from the view as a surfer. surfers are the most riskiest group of all to get attacked by a shark, that's statistically accurate. when i stated that shark was curious about dinner, it was a figure of speech re: what sharks are curious about when it comes to surfers. it's obvious that humans are not a part of the great white shark's natural menu, nevertheless, there's a shark with its mouth wide open and water foaming around a surfer, telltale signs of trouble. so i didn't see any fear mongering in a news story with video about the surfer.

re: the common sense- i don't go surfing during thunderstorms either, just like with sharks venturing into the area, the storm will pass and i can paddle out later with only having to worry about the ocean kicking my ass, not sharks or lightning.

not saying surfers (and everyone) needs to be diligint in our fight against the sharks, just saying that when sharks are in the area, like a storm, i find it's best to not paddle out.

maybe there is some fear-mongering in general on tele about sharks, i can see that, but i think in this instance, i found it to be a valid news story.

I agree with the common sense, we may not be on the menu, I like to be sure I don't even have an encounter where possible.

For me personally I am always aware of the following :

Steer clear of fish in the water ***especially*** if they are jumping out of the water

Steer clear of river mouths

Steer clear when a lake is opened up to drain into the ocean

No dusk / dawn surf/swim

So you have been sitting on a surfboard when a shark has come up from behind, become entangled in your leg rope and then started to thrash about knocking you off the board and pulling you under water?

It would have been terrifying, to me being under water aware of a sharks presence is not the same as what he experienced.

average number of people killed per year by sharks? about 6-7

average number of people killed per year by mosquito? about 650,000

cows kill more people per year than sharks, hippos hold the record for being the most dangerous mammals

The Top 19 Animals That Kill The Most Humans

(sharks don't even make that list)

Interesting source, i'm not sure anyone was disputing any of this though?

i like sharks and i hate when they are portrayed as evil killers - and even worse: when they are hunted because of something that is far from true

edit: but I would still avoid taking a bath with one, just in case he has a bad day or confuses me with a seal

Where have they been portrayed as an evil killer in this thread?

They are an amazing creature, however they are violent (they're a freakin predator that is their role) and it scares the hell out of me that I could have a limb ripped off because it was curious or mistook me for food.

That doesn't mean they all should be destroyed or are evil killers, it just means it is an extremely scary thought to think how they could rip through your flesh with ease, tear off a leg or arm etc.

Also in my case (and definitely dyna mo's) it is easy to relate due to where I live and how often I use the ocean.

They throw the word hero around now so much it cheapens it. But that other guy in the water who saw it and immediately started swimming toward his friend and the shark is a hero.
