News Ashley Madison scandal hits our region

I'm sure this is happening at local levels all over the place, but yesterday our local paper ran a headline story:

Yes, I am talking about the Ashley Madison data dump. And yes, there is information about Niagara residents in that data. A lot of it.

To be clear, I am not naming names here. I honestly do not care who is sleeping with who and I have little interest in throwing more chum into the feeding frenzy that has become the Ashley Madison scandal.

There is, however, one unavoidable fact we should take note of? a small battalion of public servants used public resources to trawl for an affair on Ashley Madison.

A search through the data reveals emails of employees of the Niagara Health System, Brock University, Niagara College and Niagara Parks and the Niagara Regional Police.

There is also a staggering number of Ontario provincial government emails, though I don't know how many are connected to this region. My search was hardly exhaustive, but did also identify emails that go back to St. Catharines city hall, the Niagara chapter of the Canadian Mental Health Association and a Niagara Falls casino.

Public servants using taxpayer-funded resources...to potentially cheat on their spouses. Nice. You really have to question their utter lack of judgement.

It'll be interesting to keep tabs on the local fallout within these organizations.

This being a reality even a child can understand, why oh why would anyone use their work email for an Ashley Madison account, particularly when they work for a public agency? They could have created an anonymous email address. Lots of users used handles like "[email protected]", "[email protected]," and my personal favorite "[email protected]."
