Online file backup company?

I've been researching these fuckers for the past two hours and every single site is an affiliate referral site. I get all warm and fuzzy, and right as I'm about to pull the trigger, I start finding bad user reviews.

Hopefully you all can assist me. Do you use any sort of online file backup system like iDrive or Carbonite? If so, which one and would you recommend it? I'm looking for a 2 - 5TB.

We have been tossing around using one as well. DropBox acutally has one but Its a bit expensive.

https://aws.amazon.com/glacier/

Edit: If you are accessing your backsups often, glacier is not for you - but you can't beat the pricing.

For regular stuff, like important shit on your local machines, I use idrive.com since it does continious backups. Been using them for years now, restore works like a charm.

I'm on a PC. No idea what's good for Macs if you are one of them.

Us mac users don't need to backup, as our superior products never go wrong...

After tons and tons of user reviews, I finally decided to give Dupplica a shot. I've never even heard of the company, but out of all the user reviews, they are far and away the best. And at $2 a month for unlimited storage and bandwidth, it's really a no risk trial.

Are they affiliated with 1and1?

On a more serious note, what kind of backup services are you looking for specifically? People tend to refer to "backup" as different things. Do you want regular, instant access? Do you want snapshots of different points in time? Do you want to add files once every six months and only touch it when disaster strikes? Etc. etc.

Fuck 1and1!

That's a good question. I mainly need it for long term storage and disaster preparedness. I have GIGS of photos and videos of my kids, family, etc. I also have a lot of work that I would like to protect. I don't need a system where I use it as a secondary storage, I have a couple external drives for that and those work fine. I would just sleep better at night knowing that a lightning strike or power surge couldn't delete 20+ years of memories.

For me it's upload, save, and done. No bells or whistles.

I'd never trust a company I never heard of with my data (especially at such a low price), but that's just me.

I'm not deleting the data from my local drives. I already have it backed up in two locations locally. This is just another layer of redundancy in case by some freak chance an EMP goes off in my neighborhood, or a fire breaks out and destroys everything.

If they were mission critical files or even a server backup, you're right. I would never go with an unknown company. But for my purpose here, this just may work. If not, I'll uninstall their client, and go with one of the big boys.

Money isn't the issue, I don't mind paying a couple hundred a year. But if you read the reviews, it seems like most of the big companies have a practice of getting your data and then extorting you to get control of it. I don't need any other headaches in my life right now.

After a recent RAID failure, I did a lot of looking into this. I decided that Crash Plan was the best option for me.

$2 a month for unlimited? I think the risk there would be you go to download a backup and they're out of business.

You definitely won't beat that price though. We use mozy, which works fine, but is a rip off price-wise.

There's also a risk they are finding some creative uses for your data

Then amazon glacier is the way to go.

Also, according to Alexa, they must be quite new or not much used.
