How can I follow Website Articles?

This sounds like the most newb question ever and it probably is but how do I follow all posts from a single website / multiple websites or posts from that website from specific authors.
I would like the posts shown on my desktop in a feed or something.

I have never used anything like this before hence not knowing.

Example site: The Register: Sci/Tech News for the World

I kind of know about RSS feeds, never used them though, do people still actually use those things, is there not a better way?

Ok, so I find a feed how do I get that to show on my desktop or wherever, updated say hourly?

So that feed is The Register - Security - They offer mybookmarks or my Yahoo!??
