Anybody else here disappointed by the latest Star Wars movie?

I don't mean to be a joykill but I feel that the movie was just a repackaging of all the movie cliches of the past 50 years.

Emotionally manipulative? Check.

Conformist symbology? Check.

Relies on outdated archetypes. Check.

Don't get me wrong. As a money making enterprise, it's a work of sheer genius. Imagine repackaging stuff people are already enjoying and serving it right back at them. No real innovation needed. Template-based Flippa site flippers would be proud.

I don't normally watch Star Wars films, went to watch it yesterday and it managed to hold my attention, it was good enough to watch, though I'm a more a fan of science fiction rather than science fantasy

I like the distinction you make between sci fi and sci fantasy. Lots of people confuse the two.

I thought it was great. I did notice the plot was very similar to the original, but it was still good enough on it's own. It is exactly what we needed it to be - It tied in with the original three Star Wars movies and introduced it to a brand new generation and will move it forward.

And it made a shit load of money on it's first weekend. Just imagine what the merchandising brought in.

You nailed the JJ Abrams reboot formula.
What you said could have easily applied to his other reboot, ST.

Yes, but I will survive. Still, I am not a big StarWars fan, so it's just a movie for me. Plenty of good films this year, tho. Hopefully, the next one will be great too.

same thing as the latest Star Trek movie

it already became a pattern, if JJ Abrams agrees to film it, its purely a business, money making project

nothing to do with stories, plots, traditions, legacies, franchises... everything of that sort is basically thrown out of the window

He's very talented, but I prefer it when he does original stuff, like Cloverfield, but of course he follows the money

as much as im a cynic, IMO disney did right by outright copying the template that launched the franchise. Had they created an all new plot, with little to no tie to the first trilogy, it had the potential to sink the franchise, once & for all, had audiences been tepid or disappointed. Disney spent 4 billion on getting its rights, so they were destined to play safe for the re-boot.

episode 8 will definitely feature Rey deep throating Finn.

I think it was a very conscious choice to use the first movie as a blueprint, but add enough to make it seem new. Abrams is a smart guy and knew he needed to do the opposite of what the prequels did.

Great way to frame it. JJ Abrams' job is basically to RESET the direction of the franchise so it can make more money in the future.

Lucas kind of left the brand in a ditch with the 3 prequels.

Jar Jar's name continues to haunt many SW purists to this day.

I've seen far better films, the script writing was more a case of photocopying, acting poor, scenario was been there, seen that and got the T-Shirt.

At many points it was just a rehash, still it was enjoyable. As for getting an Oscar, only for the 3D which could have been better.

and I absolutely love that he went in this direction. I'm not kidding when I say this movie experience felt like the kind I used to have in the 80's, which rarely happens these days. I'm Ok with the blatant derivation and actually appreciate it in this case.

It was enjoyable and I'm glad we went to see it. Was it as good as?

The Martian
Spectre
Creed
Black Mass
Legends
Everest
In the Heart of the Sea

Absolutely NOT. Not even the 3D effects were as good as Everest, those avalanches had me ducking and diving and it was nail biting stuff.

Mark Hammill has done nothing since Star Wars 3,4,5. There's a reason for that. Will he get to do more in the next one, will it do as well?

Lastly, Disney rarely makes great movies except for cartoons. This was a Franchise film, they made sure the old molds would do the job and the back stock only needed new boxes. And the ending gives you another clue about who doesn't want to be in the next one.

I just saw it last night and I thought it was great, there are certainly things about the movie I didn't like but if we gonna have more Star Wars movies I'm ok with this storyline. Now that the story is finally going forward again we can just pretend those prequels were just a bad dream Luke was having during his years of exile, and they never existed. I'm glad they didn't overdo it with cute little characters like the fucking Ewoks, and it kept a pretty dark and bleak tone through the film. I kinda wish the first three movies were left alone, but the genie has been let out of the bottle again. Maybe we'll get a good entertaining trilogy before Disney runs it into the ground, for all its faults I'd rather have my kids watching this than that Harry Potter crap.

I guess... if anything... what I learned from the recent SW film is that Audience tastes change.

Sensibilities change.

While I think, deep down, our need for a happy ending or black and white morality will remain the same... the way those needs are met change with time.

What was profound several decades ago might seem, well, inadequate now.

The more things change... the more things stay the same.
